- Remove rusty iron particles from pools filled with well water. Best for smaller pools but has been done on some of the larger Intex pools. All you need is socks and a rubber band. Happy swimming.
Absolutely fabulous - thank you so much, it worked and really fast! We now have a clean, fresh pool, all for the cost of 1 pair of old socks. So grateful for your video.
Thank you so much for your video. The pool company one to sell me a $300 filter. And that’s after $60 worth of shocking solutions. All I needed was some old socks. Works great!
Awesome, so glad. God bless.
Amazing! Thank you!! We are new Intex pool owners (600 gallon) and our well water was fine at first but when we added chlorine tabs in the floater, we started to get rusty-colored gunk. Came to TH-cam and this seemed like an awesome, easy fix. I got three wool winter socks for the filter and in 2 hours our rusty gunk was gone and the pool was crystal clear. We are running the filter overnight w/socks just to be sure. We will use a bucket to pull the socks out of the pool, that way the gunk won’t get back into the pool. Can’t believe how quickly this worked! Genius. Thanks for sharing.
Iron out will clear it in minutes
Hello. I'm from Ukraine. watched your video and made a very useful conclusion for myself. Thank you so much for this idea, I now have a clean pool.
Let me just say this! I watched countless videos that recommended buying a bunch of different chemicals and then I came across this video !!! Thank you for sharing your solution! My pool cleared up in 2 days from using your process! No money spent and my pool is clear as day! Thank you so much!!
I'm at my wit's end about the sudden appearance of a green tint in my pool which I refilled with hard water (aquifer). None of the pool supplies shops in my country have anything about metal removers so I'm unable to try those solutions readily. My last resort was to replace all of the water but now I've just put 3 white socks on my filter's outlet secured with hair ties and rubber bands. Your solution makes sense and hopefully it also works for oxidized copper, which for my pool is a green tint rather than the yellowish one you have here.
Update: Green tint gone! No chemicals needed, just socks! Thank you so much and Happy Easter from the Philippines.
So glad it worked. God Bless.
Use iron out too get the socks clean
Use iron out. Instantly turns the water clear
How much time did it take?
If you fill with your hose put the socks on the hose while you fill to catch iron before it even gets in pool. I used heavy duty thick winter socks with a tube sock on last. This really gets any iron or sediment out as well. Also attach the hose to the ladder so the socks are not in the water. This way no iron will dissolve into pool when you remove socks to clean. I used some rope to attach hose to ladder. A heavy duty rubber band should keep socks on. Zip ties good as well
Toree Adams were the winter socks you used made of wool?
THANK YOU to the moon and back!!!!!! You are literally a genius!!!! I’m so happy you posted this video!!!
Wow you should get this patent because my pool was this green and I used the sock method and my pool is blue with also adding metal free chemicals . Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge !
They have this thing called iron out. One hour brown to clear
Worked!!! It's blue now! I wish I could attache the photos that I took! Drastically changed!! Our old socks worked Thank you sir!!
Awesome, I’m so glad. Enjoy your pool. God Bless
Amazing! Thank you! Ran it thru 3 pairs of sock for 41/2 days straight (with many rinsings of socks and filter.)
This absolutely works.
Iron out next time trust me
I bought 1 gallon of rust out. I am going to try that then I am going you're route. Thank you. 2018 to 2022 I hope you're pool is still clean.
Wow!!!!!!! I just want to say thank u!!!!!! We just got r pool, 3rd day in we shocked it and it turned green by morning. Thought it was algea, bought ALL KINDS of cleansing chemicals....nothing worked! Found out it was due to the iron/copper/rust/metals in the water. Ur video popped up first on how to get rid of the coloring, and i thought, hey it's worth a shot....and BAM!!!! Pool was soooooooo much cleaner after running the pump with the socks on the tube over night!!! Totally awesome idea!!!!!!!!! THANK U!!!!!
We just got our pool filled, and we will be trying this technique for sure! Thank you so much for the video!
I got my very first pool last week (inflatable) filled it up& the next day it was Green I now know because of the metals in the well water, I totally freaked out and drained it wish I had try this first
when I refill it I think I am going to put a sock with polyfill on the end of the hose and put it in the filter cartridge area
thanks for the great video!
@Megan Ortega when I refilled I put a submersible pump in with a homemade filter on it that I put a polyfill stuffed sock in , I also upgraded my pool pump the ones that come with them are basically useless, my water has done great this time!
Inside your socks try adding some quilt batting. I’ve wrapped it around my pool filter and it completely cleared all rust out of my pool within just a day or two!!
Sounds like a great idea. I always have socks around and never have quilt batting but maybe I’ll pick some up soon to keep around.
Woohoo guys I'm so full of hope and hyped about this method. I was struggling last month with my hard pool water from the well, last 3 weeks water was kind of good, but today it turned green ASF.
I guess the water softener I poured before stopped working. I used new bottle of water softener and I'm about to add socks to the hose today.
Wish me luck 🤞! I will keep you updated.
I wanted to say thank you thank you a hundred times thank you!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 If it wasn’t for this video I wouldn’t have a sparkling blue pool for the summer!! And I’m only out 3 socks 🧦 no extra chemicals this year!!! So happy! If the lady at the pool store hadn’t mentioned iron/rust to me I wouldn’t have stumbled on this but I did and it took 48 hours! Crystal clear and has stayed that way! Thanks for making this video been a great help to a DIY mom and I’ve raved about since!! I wish I could post the pics!
Iron out next time trust me
You are the man!!! Worked exactly like you said it would whom ever thumbs downed this video should sit on the thumbs they used to do it with. My wife was ready to move after she saw the color of the water, now she will stay a little longer, or at least until the next fiasco.....
Thank you so much!! My pool is almost perfectly clear in 2 days! Can't believe how much the socks picked up! I did two socks with some poly fill inside. Worked amazing!
Iron out next time trust me
This Works! Do it! I rinsed the filter and changed the socks filter often, than one all-night pump filter run did the trick. 2 days cleared a brown 10' x 30" pool.
There was a slow drip on the outside after I removed the filler hose (even with the cap on the inside of the pool). Luckily I found a large enough cork. Using the hose sprayer was the key to getting the H filter clean. What rinsed out was the color of black coffee. The hoses still have sediment I must clean out, but the pool itself is clear! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.... just had this happen and I was so frustrated until I saw your video. I called my local pool supply store and they said they had a bunch of chemicals they wanted to sell me called sequestrants? All I heard was money money and more money. You saved my pool and my wallet! Xoxoxoxo
Awesome. So glad. God Bless.
Thank you for also sharing the "failures"... (socks coming off etc...)
Now I can start my project well informed, and I can avoid the issues that you mentioned
Thank you so much for this video! We filled our pool with well water and added the chlorine shock treatment overnight 2 days ago, and to our shock we woke up yesterday morning and found the pool brown with rust, looking more like a dirty pond than a pool. 24 hours later, with the sock method you showed, almost crystal clear water! 👍✨
Use iron out
Thanks for this video, this idea worked with my 32.16 feet above the ground pool with extra extra socks.
You my friend are a genius.. my pool is index 22x52 and so far I did just 24 hours and can not believe the diffrence.. was real green from metals and today it's almost clear... thank you so much...
I’m so glad it’s working for you. God Bless.
Iknow iknow, i can go out and buy more cemicals etc etc. But this trick worked perfectly. In 24 hours it has gone from brown to a weak yellow color. Gonna let it run for another 24h and it will be perfect! Thank you soo much for this tip!! First time owning a pool and i was not aware that where i live there is a good amount of iron in the water. Iron + clorine + sun = rust.. Thanks again! :)
As a first time intex owner I’m trying this right now at 11pm
Same!! 11:00pm - Flashlight - Socks - Hairband - I hope it works!! Thanks!!
did it works?
Let us know how it goes
Robb W I ended up upgrading to a intex sand filter. Left it running for four hours and the next morning the water was crystal clear😇
@@millermatic140 what were you using before the upgrade?
Oh my!!!! I was searching since yesterday.. I'm trying this method now!! I can't wait to see how does it work tomorrow! In WI, we got the water that contains a lot of iron here... I put a new INTEX pool yesterday for my kids but the water was kinda greenish.. I thank you sir!
Awesome. Hope it works for you.
Trying this right now 🙏 hope it works ! Thank you! *update- the sock cleaned out my pool and it’s crystal clear now! it cleared in about 2 days total!
I am so glad I ran across your video I'm having the same problem with a big size pool out of FL
I have a 15 foot pool, 48 inches deep and the intex pump just isn't doing the job at all. So I cut through the filter and it allows the water to run through more freely and I then put a stocking on the outlet and it catches all the debris. However, in the last couple of days I've noticed the water isn't so clear so I'll be trying this double sock method for sure and hopefully it'll do the trick. Thanks for your advice
I love this community !!!!! We get to share information. We will be trying this today. So exited.
Thank you! Your hack saved my pool! Perfectly clear in 3 days!
how long does it stay clear for?
Thanks.... We have a small 3 ft by 8 ft pool, lots of iron in our well water your method with the socks worked for us overnight gonna do it a second night just to be sure but that water looks crystal clear today🌊
Thank you!! We have been having the same problem...we are going to try this next👍🌞
Thank you, I just filled my pool and this happened… I shocked it and everything. Time to try the tried and true method you shared!
THIS SAVED ME TONS!!! 24HRS and the iron is gone!!!i have a 1000gallon pool and is fairly small sooo its didnt take much time..also left the chlorine in the floaters...
Thank you so much my pool is clear now and I didn't have to buy any expensive chemicals.
I just wanna say thank you!! We were about to dump out are 18x48 pool we filled with well water. It wasn’t bad till we added the chlorine and then it got worse, this did the job! We have sparkling water now 😁🙌🏻🤩 if you have a sand filter put you some poly-fil or old pillow stuffing in it, woks wonders… We also did three socks on a sump pump as well and within 12 hours it was so clear!
So glad for you!
I added polyfil from an old pillow into the socks and it worked amazing! I stuck the socks write on the pool return jet too didn’t even need to disconnect it. Clear in a few days without any chemicals 😁
I tried it yesterday and within a few hours its clear!! Thanks again!!
Thank u for this video!! We all appreciate it! I don't want to add more harmful chemicals! God Bless You Sir. ❤
Thanks for tip I'm currently doing it to my pool. I had a thought of putting the socks on the hose while filling that should get most of it. Also they sell rv filters that attach to garden hoses for 30 bucks. Thanks for the video
Halfway through filling my pool started seeing iron. Stopped filling and found this video. I used three socks on my garden hose to continue the fill. I thought catch the iron before it gets in the pool..
Then finished cleaning the water by socks on discharge hose. Thank you
I just can't get over how well this worked it's awesome thanks for the info.
It doesn't work as well as iron out. Iron out eats the metals and clears your pool within one hour
Trying this now!! My pool looks like ice tea! Fingers crossed 🤞. I'll let you know how it turns out.
It totally worked!!! Thank you.
I’m trying tomorrow !!!!! Wish me luck
I wonder if this would work if you did it to the hose while filling the pool. Thereby removing the rust before it even gets into the pool?
I am trying that now. I’m going to say it’ll help but I doubt it will take it all out it usually doesn’t turn this color until you shock it
hi I did this and it worked! how do I add new water? you know when the level goes down and you need to top it off with a little more? would the socks work on the hose?
Great way to remove iron out of pool. I have a 8ft diameter pool. It took a day and a half. Thanks
I can’t thank you enough!!!! You are a lifesaver!
Filled up my pool (18x4) above ground round. It was clear until I put a bag of shock in it and then turned brown. Thank you for this as I think this will correct my problem.
I wonder if placing a magic eraser in the sock as well would help it filter faster?
So take the tube that pushes the water in the pool and put socks on that?
The “return” hose from the filter, yes.
How do you do the return hose please !!!!!
Not sure I understand your question but everything I do is in the video
Is it better to have the socks lower in the pool or higher?
I don’t think it really matters. Thanks for stopping by.
I must say I tried this method with white socks and quilt batting stuff inside the socks so it can better filter and it works after draining my son pool 3 times from green looking water and after shocking still didn't work now he have blue water amazing
I did this, plus added a bit of polyfill between each sock and it went about twice as quickly.
Hello, I got small pool with small light blue mosaic inside. I can get clear water in the pool but the water inside the filter gets light blue colour same as the mosaic after 8 hour filtering. PH and Clorum normal and using algicide. Can you tell me the cause. Can it be the mosaic tearing apart in dust particles? Or is there any kind of algae that has light blue colour?
Thanks
Jorge Dias
THANK YOU!!! You are literally a lifesaver ♥️
Can I put the socks over the fill hose and filter the water as it fills the pool?
Socks over the fill hose will make no noticeable difference. It works with the pool pump return hose because the pump cycles the same water through the socks over and over picking up trace amounts of discolored particles with each pass. This is why it takes multiple days of cycling the same water over and over until eventually clear.
So I used a small ankle sock lol. I have to find a longer white sock. Could I use an old white pillow case??
So the socks work because they’re very absorbent and there are many small fibers creating a lot of surface area for the water to make contact with. A pillow case, on the other hand, is usually very thin and usually not very absorbent so I don’t think it would work well. A terry cloth towel would work better but find some socks for best results.
Trying this now. I went to the pool store they had me buy 60 dollar worth of stuff and after 2 days it went from dark brown to orange but it’s still pretty bad. Wish me luck! Thank you for the info!
Our water source is deepwell. What's the next step after the removal of stain (Also, should I expect it to change color after applying chlorine?)? Follow up question, how often do you change the water?
You don't need to change the water, just add when it gets low. Chlorinate slowly otherwise you'll end up with a yellow pool. This just happened to us and thanks to this video, it's almost clear!
I have been doing this for years. I use fiber fill in the socks😊
Wow thanks! You just saved me so much money .
Trying this today! We have county water but it is FULL of rust 😩. Cleaned our filter yesterday and it was FULL of it.
Worked great and no chemicals. Thanks
Great idea. Thanks for sharing!
Is it just the sock or did you add anything my pool is turning green
The sock is for removing the iron. If your pool was already clear and is turning green, it’s probably algae forming. Chlorine is typically used to prevent the formation of algae. If my pool gets too out of control from algae, I usually dump it and start over,
We have high chlorine in our pool currently. Around 10 on the test kit. Would I need to add more chlorine before I do this? Or are my levels high enough??
Can’t really answer about the chlorine levels as I only add chlorine as it “appears” to need it (based on sight). I would say that if you’ve got chlorine in the pool just start the process and see what you get. It can only help.
in an inground big pool where do you attach the other end ..to s.c.
You may be able to do something where the pool filter goes but you should check with someone that knows about your pool type. 😀
Put your waste pipe over the edge of the pool with sock on. You may have to put extension on waste pipe.
Does the water turn green’ish everytime you put chlorine in? Or you filter it out and it’s gonna be clear everytime you put chlorine?
It does not turn green every time chlorine is added. I believe that was just the initial reaction with the iron in the water. Once the iron is filtered out I just do regular pool type maintenance (chlorine, clean filter, etc.) and everything is fine.
2 more things I did- after the water was clear, the liner floor was very slippery, as was the underwater liner walls. I wiped down the walls and the floor with clean rags and discovered brown residue causing this. I have not yet rei sed/ cleaned out the hoses that are still tinged brown, but have attached the hose to the normal water inlet. I chose two socks with thin cuffs and tucked the edge gently around the edge of the normal water inlet. The water flowed in well through the socks and shortly thereafter was just a slight brown stain beginning. Nothing at all like the initial filtering, but maybe enough to stop another slippery/ slimey liner issue.
Iron out next time. Pour stir clear!
@codycampbell790 what do you mean with iron out? The only metal we have in the pool if from the ladder itself
Im doing it now but i added the socks as im putting water over the hose.
You can put the sock straight over the return strainer. No need to remove the pipe
You could do it a variety of ways, just demonstrating the concept. My “return strainer” barely has anything to grab onto.
I've been doing this for a week and it's still rusty and in the middle it is just rusty I take a broom and sweep it towards the filter and I still can't get it clear it's been a week running every single day with new socks and changing out filters I'm about to give up lol
Make sure you keep some pool chlorine in the pool so algae growth doesn’t become your new problem. If your pool is really large it may take a while and other problems may occur (like algae) before it becomes clear works best on smaller pools or larger pools with better pumps it I’ve done the technique on larger pools with crappy pumps and it has worked, just took longer
Thank u so much for sharing! I was so frustrated and didnt know how to fix our water. This seems simple and inexpensive enough. One question, when u say u put chlorine in it. Did u put the tablet in the filter or did u just put the chlorine straight in the pool? Thanks!
A chlorine tablet is slow release as is more for longer term maintenance. I would go with the liquid chlorine initially to see the immediate results. God Bless.
@@wormfamily4552 thank u
@@wormfamily4552 do you mean bleach? Can you use just regular bleach? I am about to try this!! Thank you!!
Have to be white socks?
Not really, but I definitely wouldn’t use dress socks, way too thin. Something thicker and probably cotton.
How much of chlorine did you put for your pool
I initially put in 2 gallons at first. A couple days later another gallon
Wouldn't it be easier to put the socks in the return?
Just use Metal Free. These methods work but not fully (at least in my area) I did the sock method and the bucket filled with poly method but came back once the Chlorine oxidizes.
Clear it up in 1 day ez. Add Flocculant while running filter for 2hrs. Turn off filter and wait 8-10hrs. You will see it drops all the sediment to the bottom for you to use a pool vac and take it out. Keep it on backwash while you vacuum out the sediment till your done. Let pool sit another few hrs to see if any more sediment needs to be vacuumed out and your gucci. Rinse and repeat if needed and make sure when filling pool to do in increments and to buy cheap water filter for end of the hose 👌
Good job thank you for pointing me in a direction I'm gonna give it a try
Thank you. It worked on my sisters pool. Wow. Amazing.
FYI it’s not rust it’s sediment and tannins from your well. If your well runs too long it can start pulling in tannins from debris at bottom of your well
Its 1.37 am... hubby and i we just try the sock method! We are expecting 110 degrees... we are hoping to see amazing results!!! Although we are short of 3 socks🤣worth the socks...
So you only have to do this once per season, when you first filled the pool?
This is done when the pool is first filled to remove the iron from the water which is what gives it that rusty color, then from then on it’s just regular pool maintenance.
Worm Family I used a sequestriant while filling, water was crystal clear for a few days. Added chlorine on day 4 and it immediately turned it green/brown. Very frustrating. Trying the sock technique, but just not sure this little filter will cut it on the 18' pool. Well will see.
Most likely there is still iron in the pool. The chlorine will react with the iron and cause the water to change colors. I don’t use pool store chemicals besides chlorine (the video mentions how I gave that up) but my experience, if you allow enough time for the socks to pickup the iron it will clear up, even with chlorine. I used sequestrants in the past and it never did the trick for me. My local pool store would sell me things to make my pool chemistry “just right” but it wound up costing many times more than the pool even cost that’s why I searched for an alternate method and found one. Hopefully things will change for you. In the past when the pool chemistry got way out of control I would just dump the water and start over. This is a real option if your pool is small but maybe not if it’s large but I rarely have problems anymore.
i am just setting up our 10' intex pool for the first time ever and our water will be coming from the well also. I know this will be our problem. so I should fill the pool, put the sock on and let the filter run and keep changing out the socks. do I wait to put chlorine in until after it is clear of iron or put chlorine in right away? and I see you have the hose on the top of the pool with the sock, can you put the hose back thru the pool hole when you are done without emptying the pool?
Go ahead and put the chlorine in the pool to begin with then let run for a day, wash out the socks, then repeat. Do this until the pool is clear then reattach the pool filter hose back to the proper port on the side of the pool. You should be able to figure it out pretty easily. Happy swimming!
Thank you so much for this video! It worked perfectly for our pool!
Iron out use it next time literally don't have to do anything but pour in, stir, done.
@@ct7063 the socks didn't work for me.
I have this same exact problem, I saw this video. So now I'm trying this technique to see if it actually works😊 I will repost and let y'all know how it's doing
Been having a tanker bring in to fill my pool the last few years. $200 each summer since we have well water. Gonna try this next week once my new pump gets here.
How’d the pool refill go?
@@wormfamily4552 went great! Shocked it didn't turn green at all. Pool is about 2900 gallons, filled it and ran the well dry twice to do it. Lol. Added shock, chlorine tablet and 2 cups of Meriatic Acid...boom clear as can be. I run the pump pretty much nonstop too. I rinse out the filter every 2 days or so. Hard to find those Intex type A filters anywhere so I'm just reusing mine for now.
@@kennethdurbin3385 great!
THANKS FOR SHARING. good video
I used well water and I think it has high Iron it turned brown after aplying shock dosis of Chloride, we have a Intex 5.49m diamater cilynder, we will try this metod
What if we dont have a filter?😕
Do you have a pump? If not then your pool will never be anything other than what comes out of the hose
Thanks fir the video tho looks easier and cheaper than bucket method.. I tried chemicals but it hasn’t helped I’ll v doing this today tho THANK U
was this after the first fill? also would you be able to tell me what chemicals you used when filling for first time? :)
What you see in the video is what took place after filling an empty pool. Just prior to videoing I added chlorine (probably about 2 gallons) which turned the pool from “iced tea” to “lemonade”. Everything else is in the video. I don’t use any chemicals in the pool besides chlorine. 🙂
@@wormfamily4552 Ok great!, would the chlorine tablets work just as good? Were setting up our pool this weekend & filling with well water as well, so I'm hoping to get it all right the first time around lol Thanks!
JAJUkween - Chlorine tablets are more for continued, long term maintenance because they dissolve slowly over time maintaining the chlorine but for that initial boost, the liquid is what you’ll need to use.
Worm Family sounds good thank you
Florida storms will knock your socks off lol
How long did it take you to fill from your well? Did you run it continuously? I'm on day 2, I only let it run for an hour max, because I'm afraid of draining the well and burning up the pump. This is my first pool, and only 4th year in the country, so I'm new to EVERYTHING 🤣
It depends on your pool size but it may take most of a day. I think you’re ok to let it run until it is full but you may want to check with someone locally. I’m in Florida we don’t have a shortage of water.
Run well for a few hours let pump rest so it won't over heat
Skip all that!!! Buy a powder jug of iron out and pour it in and stir. Let sit for one hour, boom done!!! Clear as day
Did you just put iron out a nd use filer in your pump?
