Here's a really sterotype explanation for the Nordic Family (countries): Denmark is the mild mother Sweden is the strict father Norway is the beautiful daugther Finland is the rebelious son Iceland is a beloved cousin Greenland is the adopted child.

Denmark as a founding member of the EU is a bit...misleading. The EU was really an extension of the EEC which Denmark joined at the start of 1974 after the Referendum of 1973. The EEC had started as a Coal & Steel collaboration quite a long time before. But yes, the official name European Union and the treaties governing the Union were with Danish participation from the start. We just don't consider ourselves as founding member due to a long memory.

Because of that, the English language has more than 600 common words, that comes from old Danish (Norse language).
