      This venue is a bit quirky banning groundbait. It's not Banbury DAA the controlling club's rule, it's the council's as it's a drinking water venue. Still not 100% sure on the logic but it's no big deal.

    We used to fish a pool in the industrial estate year’s ago, but I’ve never seen this reservoir, is it a feeder for the Oxford canal?

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably the one. It's also called Banbury Reservoir. I gather it's the town's reserve drinking water resy rather than a canal feeder. That's why the council don't allow groundbait.

  • @waynenippard5933
    @waynenippard5933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Jon. When you used the spomb, did you clip up shorter than the bait-up feeder to cater for the swing back of the feeder? Obviously as the bait-up feeder, and your clipped up rods for that matter, empty on the bottom as opposed to the spomb, which empties on impact, you have to allow for this discrepancy especially so the deeper you fish. Some proper slabs 👍

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes all good food for thought, it was a purely experimental session so on this occasion I deliberately wanted to create a bigger area to work with, but try to consciously hold the rod back further when hitting the clip. For my first experiment at the venue, my plan was to bait up a big area then fish the far edge of the feed as that's the side where I assumed any wary bream would be coming from in the clear water. I soon made the decision to fish a rod length closer once liners became a problem and caught two. All part of the experimentation process. I think a flying backlead might have helped too! I've had numerous spodding sessions for bream and not had the liner issue, so I think it's big moody fish in tap water clear water that was also an issue.

    • @waynenippard5933
      @waynenippard5933 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonArthur Great to hear your thinking; so many thanks. I only ask as I am returning to match fishing this season after 20 years away. In that time I have been carp fishing and therefore regularly use a spomb and making this allowance between where your feed empties on the surface and where your hookbait will be can be very important particularly on tight feeding areas. Adjusting this distance is common practice in carp fishing. However, if fishing for bream I agree that fishing at the front of the feed can, not only help to avoid liners, but also possibly help pick off the bigger, warier slabs that quite often hang back. While a flying backlead could help, they can also be detrimental to bite detection in my experience and the bottom also needs to be fairly uniform for them to work successfully. Any form of undulation, such as a weedbed or a bar, not only create bad angles back to your rod but can also lead to more abrasion on the line causing a potential weakness. Another solution could be to mould some mouse droppings from tungsten putty up the line behind the feeder. Food for thought. Am enjoying watching your videos as, not only do you do a variety of styles for different species on different types of venues, but you also talk through the process of the changes you make to increase your catch rate which is very beneficial. Keep up the good work 👍

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's up to 18ft in places and there's an old river bed further out. Yes I'd spod in any depths as it's nice to create a big bed of heavy particles. A cloud would be an issue, but anywhere the carpers do it, it's worth doing it for the bream too.

      Pretty sure that would be disallowed but you’d have to ask your match organiser for clarification.

    Hi Jon what knot do you find best for your leader thanks barry.

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I generally use a full blood knot (I think that's what it is) although if I have time and patience I will sometimes use a water knot, but that involves threading 5m+ of line through itself four times, which is a bit tricky. I experiment with long tags and trimming it down, but generally use long tags as a bit of extra safety.

      Just done both knots look nice and strong. When i did the water knot made the 5m in to a coil around my fingers then held it with a bit of tape. So much better to then pass it through itself thanks Barry

    Hi Jon, great vid again. I don’t usually comment but as a carper who uses spomb methods I thought I would comment with my views on the number of liners you were getting. I believe this may have been because of the stretch in the mono compared to the braid on the spomb which meant that your feeder rods were fishing beyond the spot. I know you mentioned at one stage that you might wind a few turns and fish closer because of the liners. If you did this then this probably would have put you “in the zone” and hopefully accounted for the fish you caught. Also when baiting up with the big feeder, do you think this could have caused bait to be deposited along your line? Maybe worth checking in the margin to see how long the bait would take to fully deposit out the feeder before striking it in.
    Just my observations. I don’t pretend to be an expert but I do spomb a lot for my fishing and have also tried using old spods with the nose cut off for depositing beds of ground bait when fishing for tench before and was surprised as how long it would take for the bait to become loose enough to be “struck out” on the retrieve. Take care and keep the vids coming. Ant

      Thanks Ant and all very good food for thought, it was a purely experimental session so on this occasion I deliberately wanted to create a bigger area to work with, but try to consciously hold the rod back further when hitting the clip.
      Looking back, a brief 3hrs isn't the best for a post-Spombing session as 5+ hrs would have given me more time to experiment. I'd go in with just 4-5 modest feeders next time if time was against me. I just wanted to see what a big boshing at the start did, plus I was itching to get the spod rod out of retirement and also compare casting Spombs and Bait Up feeders, plus my new 12ft rod... so it was just nice to get out and crash some bait in and have a big experiment.
      Glad you like the vids!

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've actually got one but never really needed it for a quick pre-bait. I can see why so many specimen carpers are spot mad though as it's strangely satisfying to bosh some bait in... although in hindsight with just a 3-hour session I should have just fed 4-5 feeders of bait instead. But that's the beauty of these pleasure sessions.
