Great! This is the first time I find a video lesson where I can actually learn how to make that sound without getting confused, or feeling like I'm not going to get it the right way. I couldn't agree with you more! Also, that's also a tough word to say because of that "v" sound, especially for us the ones who speak Spanish as first language - we tend to pronounce it as "b," hahaha! Keep it up!

I've been speaking American English my whole life. I've never heard of this "Dark L" before. The way I pronounce "L" is that it is shorter at the front or middle of a word and longer at the end of the word. In both cases, the tongue is pressed on the ridge behind the teeth. Perhaps more of the tongue is pressed against the ridge on a terminal "L", but it certainly is not a sound that I make in the back of the mouth; I certainly don't use the uvula. I think, for foreigners learning English, it is helpful to understand that there are variations in the way native speakers of English actually pronounce the language.
I love watching videos on how to pronounce English. Not that I can't pronounce it, I just like to see an analysis of pronunciation.

This is so helpful! Thank you so much 😊 I have a question! Do you use a Dark L for the following words: I’m asking because the L appears in the middle of words not the end but I’m thinking it’s a Dark L?
Dollar, calculate (2 L’s), feeling, regular, dialect, relative
    Thanks again so much :)

    • @charafsesko512

Yes it is dark because it is preceded by a vowel and the rule says: when I is preceded by a vowel get velarized ( becomes dark) l is postvocalic in these examples you have given.

I was into the idea to pronounce the most accurately possible the dark L that I really force a gag to study the movement of my mouth. It was really painful but worked.

The third method works for me in most words but 'final' 😅. Thank you for your great methods. I just need more practice.

Do I have to keep my tongue low in order to have a correct sound? Or just the movement of retracting the tongue is enough? Thanks!

If the back of the tongue is up it will sound more like /r/ than /l/...

@@ClearEnglishCorner I've exactly this issue my dark L sounds like the R... Any suggestion to lower the back of the tongue or maybe touching behind the teeth with the tip would correct it? Thanks so much for this excellent video!
