Man I love Robert Mitchum. Whether he's playing a bad guy in Night of the Hunter or the good guy in the classic film noir Out of the Past, he's just mesmerising.
Yes , Mitchum was so good he made other actors look hammy, Out of the Past is a great example of film noir, I read Mitchum biography "Baby I Dont Care" ,which is a line from that film , it's a very informative enjoyable read but Mitchum should have written his autobiography as he had rode the rails as a teenager during the depression and was a boxer amongst other jobs before movies and was a great storyteller .
You should know Gregory Peck's name if you've seen "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962, a must-see film) or "Moby Dick" from 1956. I also highly recommend "Captain Horatio Hornblower" (1951).

Pass on the remake. It's the usual over the top treatment that doesn't work. The remake also plays up the underlying Lolita sexual angle and doesn't add anything, but heightens the disgust response. Mitchum is a much more sinister presence than DeNiro. Mitchum was the real deal, sentenced to a chain gang as a wandering youth during the Depression. A drug conviction in the 50s while a movie star only increased his star power. He was known as one of three movie actors who could knock you out with one punch. The other two being Sterling Hayden and Robert Ryan. His most sinister role was in Night of the Hunter, a great film. Gregory Peck had no chance man to man against Mitchum in a physical encounter.
No doubt. Mitchum was the ultimate man's man as far as Hollywood actors. He was tough and real to the bone. I heard that two other guys that were tough in real life were Rod Taylor(Time Machine) and William Smith. Both are in fact in a scene together in a movie were they beat the Hell out of one another. The original is better, but the remake builds on the original, right down to using Bernard Herrmann's fantastic score and having the original cast back in cameos. Furthermore, the second one is Scorsese's and De Niro's biggest box office and a more-than-well-known movie of the 90s (even "iconic" to use that hackneyed word), certainly more well-known than the original ever was, not to mention an INCREDIBLE performance from Juliette Lewis.... so no it's not worth "passing on", it's worth seeing virtually all 21st century Scorsese films (which have plenty of reactions) and 99% of the remakes out there.

The original Cape Fear is an excellent almost-Hitchcock thriller, exploring the same themes of helplessness and paranoia as Hitchcock did, and even using his favorite composer Bernard Herrmann to write the memorable score. Mitchum's powerful performance is the perfect topper. I guess you will watch the remake out of curiosity, but it's not as good. Yes, it's in color, if that's a plus. But SPOILERS: De Niro's Cady is cartoonish, lacking the weight and threat of Mitchum's performance. The scene in which Cady almost seduces the daughter is unbelievable. The way the villain comes back to life as a "shock twist" is just stupid. The best thing in the movie is the music, which was reused from the original.
You didn’t mention that you recognized Kojak with hair, so I’ll assume you missed him. Also, the Cape Fear River enters the Atlantic Ocean near Wilmington, N.C., which is near its border with South Carolina. Good movie.
Cady was not supposed to be a likable, cuddly character. So not liking him is the correct response. His demeanor was threatening, but his words stayed on the windy side of the law in pre-stalker law days. Regarding the Hays Code, after Joseph Breen retired in 1954, it loosened up quite a bit, slowly at first, but by 1960, the film industry was pushing against it, and abolishment was only a matter of time. I definitely like the original better than the remake. Mitchum is just more menacing than little Bobby D. Some Robert Mitchum movies where he is less creepy, Out of the Past, Macao, His Kind of Woman, Crossfire, and The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Some Gregory Peck you would like, Roman Holiday, Spellbound, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Omen, and On the Beach.
I think what you are picking up on is that Gregory Peck didn't do strong emotions. He usually played more stoic characters. So casting him must have been a deliberate decision. Watching this film, I was getting flashbacks to the character Gregory Peck played in the "The Big Country".
As a dad of daughters who’s had a grey haired creeper following my middle daughter home from school I understand what this father was feeling and it makes me so damn sick and angry! I conceal carry now and my daughters are educated on all they can do and have military grade pepper spray on them 24/7 . This movie gives me anxiety but is amazing too
On your own, I recommend checking out Robert Mitchum on the Dick Cavett Show. Mitchum was one cool character and that interview is definitely proof of that.
I love this movie (though still find DeNiro scarier) and 12 Angry Men as great examples of this period of film making , different reasons but showing both sides of law mindset. Pippin sending morse code out to us there at the end broke me, wonder what he was saying.
J. Lee Thompson's original "Cape Fear" is superior to Scorsese's remake in every way except score and that's only because Scorsese reused Bernard Herrman's brilliant score from the original. Gregory Peck made Sam Bowden's frustration and anger more tangible than Nick Nolte did, and Robert Mitchum's Max Cady is a deeply disturbing, terrifyingly realistic portrait of evil while Robert De Niro played him as a cartoonishly over the top hillbilly. Mitchum's second greatest performance. His greatest being Preacher Harry Powell in Charles Laughton's seminal "Night Of The Hunter" which I strongly encourage you to see.
My favorite is the original Cape Fear of 1962 with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck. In those days, you could not rely on foul language, nudity, blood, and guts. You had to be a supreme actor and the story writers had to be great. Great job Robert Mitchum you did a fantastic and memorable job!
I saw this after i saw the remake, I agree that Robert Mitchum made the movie, if you want to see a movie about a bad guy with the law on his side try out the movie, Pacific Heights (1990) with Michael Keaton and Melanie Griffith
I agree that Gregory Peck is excellent in his role and perfectly cast, he always exuded a resolute uprightness aided by that magnificent voice. But the movie stands or falls on Robert Mitchum and he owns the film with a performance of unnerving power. He is one of the most underrated of the classic leading men because he always made his work look so effortless and his attitude towards acting was outwardly dismissive. But all you have to do is watch some of his best work to know that was a protection from prying eyes and questions on his technique. I've seen many references to his work in "The Night of the Hunter" one of his most masterful performances for sure, but the part is full of bravado providing many opportunities for showy work. While it's is definitely worth seeking out I'd recommend a few other films which required more subtle work which he delivered expertly. The first would be one of the quintessential noirs 1947's "Out of the Past", also 1960's "Home from the Hill" and the film that I think contains his most complex work as a rambler who knows no other way questioning if what he's pursuing is worthless, the 1952 rodeo drama "The Lusty Men" that also contains award level work from his costars Susan Hayward and Arthur Kennedy. He made many other films and was fine in all of them but being a contract player they are a variable lot though that's not to say there aren't many enjoyable pictures among them.
the 1991 scorsese/de niro remake of this movie is THE ONLY motion picture I have EVER gotten up in the middle of and walked out on in nearly 60 years of going to the "pik-sure shows"
So glad you guys covered this, genuinely one of the creepiest thrillers that gets so under my skin easily and had me on the edge of my seat through most of it! The remake is decent too, it takes a different direction which makes me effectively creepy for totally different reasons, but it gets a little too over the top crazy towards the end, it's not the least bit subtle haha!
Mitchum , was so natural in every part he plays ,the best screen actor of his generation ,he played villains , cowboys ,soldiers he always underplayed his roles and was always believable .

The DeNiro portrayal of Cady is completely cartoonish. The Simpsons parody is more realistic. The remake is all about cartoonish Cady vs. Dysfunctional family.

Was gonna mention that myself. I thought it was a nice touch in the remake, having Peck and Mitchum in sort of reverse roles, Mitchum being in Bowden's corner, and Peck being Cady's lawyer. (I guess that technically makes it two times for Peck representing Max Cady 😉)

Weighing-in on "Cape Fear" [a real place in NC] per the request of our (#Title) CINEMA SOMMELIERS at Just SUMM Reactions: I saw the remake first & thought it was just okay. Was not expecting much when I finally saw the original, but was I wrong! I could not believe how unnerving Mitchum was in this role. The man just OOZES menace. In the remake, it feels like De Niro/Scorsese are trying too hard to make Cady repulsive. But I don't remember much else about the movie because I was so disgusted by De Niro's *horrendous* Southern accent that I couldn't concentrate. (Bad Southern accents are an Unforgivable Sin in my book😊)

BRILLIANT! I love that you did the original!!!!!! I hope you do the remake - a sentence I don't usually say - because the best way to appreciate the remake (which is the one most people know, unfortunately) is to know the original because Scorsese has "easter eggs" in it. But he updates the family in a very realistic way and shows off how much had changed in thirty years. A very intelligent and interesting remake that definitely stands on its own.

Absolutely do the remake. Not so much to compare Cadys, but to "get" what's great about the remake: using Bernard Herrman's score, using the original cast in cameos and updating the family to reflect the breakdown of the family unit that had happened in the intervening years, since 1962. That's what the movie is "about" in a lot of ways.

Well, my good First-Timers, now that you've beheld Mr. Peck as the good guy that America has always thought of him as, please permit me to recommend that, before you see him in anything else, catch him in rare form as the bad guy. Bad guy? Let's talk Dick. I'm talking BIG Dick. I'm talking *monster* Dick. Yes sirree, I am talking *MOBY DICK* - in John Huston's 1956 adaptation of Melville's magisterial masterpiece. It's literally a whale of a tale - and folks, in Huston's hands, that ain't no fluke. 😏 🐳
Remakes add "improvements" like blood and gore, no subtle nuances, someone barfing and someone else going to the bathroom, foul language and random plot changes. When this is done to literature including Conan Doyle, Homer and even the Gospel it's even worse. Please no 2nd remake with the girl willing , the mother stalking the stalker and daddy in drag joining in the fun as per new Disney trend.

My favorite is the original Cape Fear of 1962 with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck. In those days, you could not rely on foul language, nudity, blood, and guts. You had to be a supreme actor and the story writers had to be great. Great job Robert Mitchum you did a fantastic and memorable job!
I hope you guys watch the remake. Also, the Southern accents are there, but I think it's a case of the fish not being able to see the water.

I agree that Robert Mitchum made the movie, if you want to see a movie about a bad guy with the law on his side try out the movie,

I agree that Gregory Peck is excellent in his role and perfectly cast, he always exuded a resolute uprightness aided by that magnificent voice.
But the movie stands or falls on Robert Mitchum and he owns the film with a performance of unnerving power. He is one of the most underrated of the classic leading men because he always made his work look so effortless and his attitude towards acting was outwardly dismissive. But all you have to do is watch some of his best work to know that was a protection from prying eyes and questions on his technique.
I've seen many references to his work in "The Night of the Hunter" one of his most masterful performances for sure, but the part is full of bravado providing many opportunities for showy work. While it's is definitely worth seeking out I'd recommend a few other films which required more subtle work which he delivered expertly.
The first would be one of the quintessential noirs 1947's "Out of the Past", also 1960's "Home from the Hill" and the film that I think contains his most complex work as a rambler who knows no other way questioning if what he's pursuing is worthless, the 1952 rodeo drama "The Lusty Men" that also contains award level work from his costars Susan Hayward and Arthur Kennedy. He made many other films and was fine in all of them but being a contract player they are a variable lot though that's not to say there aren't many enjoyable pictures among them.
the 1991 scorsese/de niro remake of this movie is THE ONLY motion picture I have EVER gotten up in the middle of and walked out on in nearly 60 years of going to the "pik-sure shows"

The remake is decent too, it takes a different direction which makes me effectively creepy for totally different reasons, but it gets a little too over the top crazy towards the end, it's not the least bit subtle haha!

Mitchum , was so natural in every part he plays ,the best screen actor of his generation ,he played villains , cowboys ,soldiers he always underplayed his roles and was always believable .
omg this MOVIE! This is the movie that ignited my love of horror as a kid, I was super sheltered as a little twelve year old watching a 160p rip of Cape Fear on youtube and it still managed to chill me to the bone and make my stomach hurt with fear. such a crazy good movie, Robert Mitchum is all-fuckin-time in this
The DeNiro portrayal of Cady is completely cartoonish. The Simpsons parody is more realistic. The remake is all about cartoonish Cady vs. Dysfunctional family.
Robert Mitchum is my favorite actor, by far. The movie 'Out of the Past' is a must see (directed by one of my favorite directors of all time Jacques Tourneur - all his movies are awesome).

Was gonna mention that myself. I thought it was a nice touch in the remake, having Peck and Mitchum in sort of reverse roles, Mitchum being in Bowden's corner, and Peck being Cady's lawyer. (I guess that technically makes it two times for Peck representing Max Cady 😉)

Okay, so. Weighing-in on "Cape Fear" [a real place in NC] per the request of our (#Title) CINEMA SOMMELIERS at Just SUMM Reactions:
I saw the remake first & thought it was just okay. Was not expecting much when I finally saw the original, but was I wrong! I could not believe how unnerving Mitchum was in this role. The man just OOZES menace. In the remake, it feels like De Niro/Scorsese are trying too hard to make Cady repulsive. But I don't remember much else about the movie because I was so disgusted by De Niro's *horrendous* Southern accent that I couldn't concentrate. (Bad Southern accents are an Unforgivable Sin in my book😊)
Thank you so much for doing this film rather than the vulgar and over-rated De Niro remake.

Cape Fear (1962) is a classic.
Emily: "You have a lot of creep energy", directed at Robert Mitchum. That dude plays creepy so fkin well! He's in a movie that I will never watch again called "Night of the Hunter" where he plays a deranged reverend. It gave me such a weird vibe and feeling. Usually if I watch a movie that I haven't seen before and I like it I'll add it to the suggestions list. Not that one! If someone recommends it of course I will add it, but it did t come from me lol

It isn't just that movies showed female behaviors that way, it's that girls were raised to be like that, to never fight, never speak up to authority, to always cede control of a situation to your husband. This movie always scared me, but others are right, you also need to watch Night of the Hunter. Robert Mitchum was a huge favorite of mine.

As others have said, now that you've seen this original, be sure to check out the Scorsese remake - it's quite good.
It's good-- but no where near as good as the Scorsese version. If anything, thanks for the reminder. I've also seen "Night Of The Hunter" but I'll wait til you do a reaction before commenting on that.

BRILLIANT! I love that you did the original!!!!!! I hope you do the remake - a sentence I don't usually say - because the best way to appreciate the remake (which is the one most people know, unfortunately) is to know the original because Scorsese has "easter eggs" in it. But he updates the family in a very realistic way and shows off how much had changed in thirty years. A very intelligent and interesting remake that definitely stands on its own.
Ok, now I've watched the reaction: fantastic! Such a damn good movie!!!! Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors, Robert Mitchum is another great one, and Martin Balsam is ALWAYS great, I always think of him as the most solid actor in all of movies, he's always good, he's the foreman in 12 Angry Men, he's the private investigator in "Psycho", he's great in "All The Presidents Men", "The Anderson Tapes", "A Thousand Clowns" and everything else. His last movie, ironically enough, was his cameo as the judge in the "Cape Fear" remake! Gregory Peck: Moby Dick, Roman Holiday, To Kill A Mockingbird, 12 O'Clock High, Man In The Grey Flannel Suit, Duel In The Sun, The Bravados. And Robert Mitchum, DEFINITELY see "Night Of The Hunter"!
The only actor i prefer from the 2nd version is Jessica Lange over Polly Bergen.

I'm a massive fan of Peck and Mitchum but I have to say I think the remake is better.
My fear of capes has not been cured but great reaction anyway! I've only seen the remake which I liked, but always heard great things about the original. Also, I didn't know Telly Savalas was in this too, neat.

Watch the new version,if only to compare and contrast the work of the two Roberts(Mitchum and Deniro) as Max Cady,and it’s also fun to spot cameos in the new version by actors in this version.Also,I just like both.Also a suggestion:please watch Robert Mitchum’s other horror-esque movie,Night of the Hunter,the only film ever directed by Charles Laughton(you know who he is,right?).It’s considered to be a great movie,just try to disregard all the damn singing,which,to me,was completely out of place.
Absolutely do the remake. Not so much to compare Cadys, but to "get" what's great about the remake: using Bernard Herrman's score, using the original cast in cameos and updating the family to reflect the breakdown of the family unit that had happened in the intervening years, since 1962. That's what the movie is "about" in a lot of ways.
PS: And Night Of The Hunter is fantastic fantastic fantastic, I completely agree about that one. They would do a GREAT reaction to "Night Of The Hunter"!!! Wow!
