I don't know of the raccoon was tested for rabies or not, but I believe Hobo was trying to comfort the raccoon letting the raccoon know it's not alone. On some level the raccoon showed trust to Hobo. If the raccoon died then least it not suffer anymore. Now Hobo ready for his next adventure
