Hans Zatzka, fue un pintor austriaco académico y de fantasía, conocido por sus pinturas de temas religiosos, mitológicos y alegóricos. También pintó retratos, paisajes, flores y bodegones. Nació el 8 de marzo de 1859 en Viena. Su padre fue un obrero de la construcción y su madre era la actriz Hilde Sochor.
Entre 1877 y 1882 estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena, perfeccionando su rico estilo clasicista con Carl von Blaas, Christian Ludwig Griepenkerl y Karl Wurzinger. Zatzka pudo ganarse la vida mediante la producción de frescos para iglesias y otras instituciones.
A Hans Zatzka se le conoce también como P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, o H. Zabateri, habiendo firmado muchas de sus obras como Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard o Bernard Zatzka. Esto viene provocando que algunas bases de datos de arte confundan el trabajo de Zatzka bajo el seudónimo de Joseph Bernard, con el del escultor francés del mismo nombre. El propósito de firmar con otros seudónimos lo hizo con el fin de vender más trabajos fuera de los acuerdos contractuales.
Zatzka murió el 17 de diciembre de 1945 en su ciudad natal de Viena, Austria, a la edad de 86 años como un pintor preternatural prolífico.
