This was probably the worst thing that could have happened for Aussie team. They became big headed after this win and completely flamed out in the London Olympics. It was the beginning of the infamous Stilnox 6.
Magnusson was an arrogant tool and a huge part of that whole debacle. Glad he never got the individual gold - it took years to undo the damage he’d done, and had he been rewarded for such obnoxious behaviour we’d likely not be in the golden era we have now.
Australia's Top 4 from the Olympic Trials... 100m Freestyle Results 1) MAGNUSSEN 47:10... 2) ROBERTS 47:63... 3) TARGETT 48:32... 4) SULLIVAN 48:53... A much faster team than the 2011 World Championship winning team.
Not sure who will win, but that doesn't really matter - although we both have our preferences. You seem to be the one person, though, that doesn't actually attack a person for another point of view. Thank YOU!
in the beginning i was talking about relay starts. i know magnussen should go about 46 high off a flat start and hes probably going first. you're right about roberts, probably 46 mid-high off a relay start. i think sullivan is going to be an integral part of the relay, i know his time was in the old polyurethane suits but dont count him out. he was going 47 lows flat start, he should do that or better with a relay start. targett 47 mid sounds about right, maybe low. hes come a long way since 08
@Drumwannabe17 Any country where swimming is the main sport gets huge respect from me. It doesn't even matter how good or bad they are. Yes I'm American.
yes i think so too ! in Shangai , they didn't put the best relay team possible available . Lezak was too slow and garrett didn't go that fast . let's seeee at trials
@nehamapeter Yes, they are in fact greater at short course because of the underwater wall work. Two seconds is quite a lot to get up in track with the other guys like Adrian, it might take a few year, but only one way to really find out! ;)
@swimmerM3 it's no problem.. it's just the 'worlds' we'll have a stronger team put together and definitely ready for when it counts.. LONDON BABY!! our boys show up when it counts.. THE OLYMPICS... everything else is just a warm up :)
I decided to respond to your comment, forgive me for not responding to every single comment on the page. I was not offended that you disagreed with me. I am simply attempting to understand what is arrogant about saying that the USA will have to work hard to win the 4x100 free relay in London? please enlighten me
alright whatever man... i didnt come on here to argue with people. i do respect your opinion, the rest doesnt matter. im sure it will be an exciting race this summer, no matter the outcome. have a nice day
Phelps could swim 100free in 48-48.1 when he was a multiple event swimmer. Hope that he,ll get 47 mid-high after his retirement because he only focus on 1 or 2 sprinting event
His split in Rio in 2016 in the 4x100m freestyle relay was 47.2 - a time that would have won gold in the individual 100m....and that in an event he doesn't really train in!!
more exactly is 47.12 but that was anchor split which you could shave a little time from the standing start, not the lead-off time. Top 100 freestyler as Nathan Adrian always go under 47 second with anchor role. He got 46.97 at the same race, and 46.74 in 4x100 IM relay, although his best in individual event is 47.52, and his stable performances around 47.80
@AgentPaulSmecker Well, more power to Lezak for being competitive at 36, but the fact he's still in USA relay tells something about that relay and why they won bronze in Shanghai. USA need to improve if they want gold in London. They need two more reliable swimmers to swim with Phelps and Adrian.
@likac92009 wrong about Phelps best. at the 2008 olympics he led off with a 47.5 so this was not his best. Weber-Gale had gone a 47 in the olympics too and went a 48 in this... Lezak split a 46 in '08 and this was a 48. Adrian was the only one who actually did good. No offense to Lezak but he is just getting old and I think we may have been better off with Lochte on it.
magnussen's gonna win the 100m free in London he so natural unlike someone like filho or bernard, just made to swim, proly the fastest 100m freestyler ever
I don't even think he will contest the 100 free in London, and if he does, he will have a very hard time even medalling. The #2 Aussie has already swum 47.6, and you know Cielo will go at least that fast. Phelps will have to make a half second drop from last year - tough sell.
hey guys!! my time 50 m free style is 30 sec and i m 13 years.. is it good?? and i m not a regular swimmer.. do u think that by regular swimming i can improve it? and compete at national level?
Domination by a wealthy country with a large population with peace and prosperity is a normal event usually in any event. The times, though, they are a changing. In regards to geographic location the US has also been blessed. Australia per capita is now more wealthy than the US but still has to compete out of season and travel longer distances and stay away from home more. For a country with a population similar to Gtr NY city it shines! Have NY only represent the US and how many medals - ZERO!
To put the times you put here in to some sort of semblance or common sense, the fastest split in history for a man in a textile suit was done LAST YEAR in 47.49 by James Magnussen ( NOT an American) so stop waffling!
@likac92009 I think Nolan is really looking to get his name out there as someone who can compete with the best in the world. I think if he is asked to step up he will.
lets hope so. the only thing i hate is how trials is so late in the season, they need more time to recover and then retaper after trials. its a more intense meet then people realize and they have to go balls to the wall to make a spot. then so shortly after theyre shipped off. australians are done and gearing up already. americans need more time. the only people it works for are people like me who arent gonna make the team but go to trials for experience, and maybe best times :)
@spicychicken2000 he definitely cannot go a 47. no american has even gone under a 48 yet. david nolan im sure is more focused on his IM and back than the free. only other option for US is ricky berens, jimmy feigan, or matt grevers. lets see what they can do at trials
+ Webber gale and why not a great Berens or Grevers or even Lochte ! Us has a lot of possibilities . I beleive Usa will match for the last 400 relay of M phelps . jeaaah
@nehamapeter I think nolan is too young, and judging how he did at nationals at palo alto I don't think he will make the olympic team. He is much better in yards than in meters, and his best even is the 200 I.M. He is very good in yards, although his meter time can't even compare to phelps and lochte. As for the 100 free, is yard time is still about a second and a half of where he should be to make the relay. The events that he is best at are events that are already almost locked up for london.
Didn't Garrett Weber Gale went a 47.3 in the medley relay prelims? Had he went that in the freestyle relay then USA would've won. In London I think the relay will go like this:
U.S. will have to do better than this at London. This wasn't bad but it has to be SUPERIOR for the Olympics. It will get more difficult than this so the U.S. better up their game in this event.
Mate you are incredibly misinformed. Magnussen should be able to go sub 47 from a flat start assuming he's healthy (he did have the flu at trials when he went 47.1) but that may or may not happen. Sullivan's 47.05 is with the LZR he has never cracked 48 without a super suit. I think only about 5-6 guys have. If magnussed leads off i think at best he might go 46 high, hopefully under WR. Roberts should go about 46 mid with changeover, sullivan and targett will probably be 47 mids
@TheUnPlayable That has nothing to do with it. America is the best swimming country in the world hands down. If you don't believe me, look at the world records, and look at the results from Beijing, Athens, Rome, Melbourne, and Shanghai. And besides, you can't win everything. Swimming is the main sport in Australia, in America it's not even close. Most australian kids dream of being an olympic swimmer, here, our kids wanna play football and sing crappy pop music.
phelps swam 100m quite good with a time of 48.08...he would be able to win a medal (bronze maybe) in 100 freestyle if he planned for coming back in Rio, of course he must focus on trainning it instead of IM, butterfly
I'm a very small swimming fan? I've been swimming competitively for 11 years my friend, I know my stuff. The reason I say that those will be the best races is because there's a great rivalry and story line behind Hansen and Kitajima. And the 400 free relay because.. it's the 400 free relay. The Phelps and Lochte rivalry isn't as exciting because they're both from the same country, it's simple as that. And those other ones you talked about? Those are good races but nothing compared to the others.
ok, honestly i was not trying to insult you. for some reason, possibly by your word choice, or your use of an "!" i thought you were, as i said, worked up. i was just trying to explain the other person's point of view, perhaps to give you a different way to think about it. really i thought just helping someone out. please do not accuse me of being close minded, when i was simply attempting to give you a different perspective. also, please stop committing dicto simplicitors . That, is arrogance.
How is getting worked up? I was and now AM just replying to a dumb comment. Seems like whenever you guys want to post a comment or make a remark it is o k . Then when some one else does it's "getting worked up?" What typical arrogance!
Great performance by team Australia. Love it. Guess front loading helps.
This was probably the worst thing that could have happened for Aussie team. They became big headed after this win and completely flamed out in the London Olympics. It was the beginning of the infamous Stilnox 6.

Australia's Top 4 from the Olympic Trials...

2) ROBERTS 47:63...
3) TARGETT 48:32...
4) SULLIVAN 48:53...
A much faster team than the 2011 World Championship winning team.
Besides Brendan Hansen beating Kitajima and everyone else in the breaststrokes, this will probably be the best race to watch in 2012. Again.
Not sure who will win, but that doesn't really matter - although we both have our preferences. You seem to be the one person, though, that doesn't actually attack a person for another point of view. Thank YOU!
James Magnussen was a freaking monster then! He's put Aussies to the another level. What a swimmer.
Aleksander Frankiewicz totally agree, am surprised he doesn’t have in his palm area any gold in the olympics
in the beginning i was talking about relay starts. i know magnussen should go about 46 high off a flat start and hes probably going first. you're right about roberts, probably 46 mid-high off a relay start. i think sullivan is going to be an integral part of the relay, i know his time was in the old polyurethane suits but dont count him out. he was going 47 lows flat start, he should do that or better with a relay start. targett 47 mid sounds about right, maybe low. hes come a long way since 08
Australia didn't pinch it from the French ..... they led the race from start to finish!
Race starts at 3:35
@Drumwannabe17 Any country where swimming is the main sport gets huge respect from me. It doesn't even matter how good or bad they are. Yes I'm American.

'James Magnussen' the missile
@swimmerM3 it's no problem.. it's just the 'worlds' we'll have a stronger team put together and definitely ready for when it counts.. LONDON BABY!! our boys show up when it counts.. THE OLYMPICS... everything else is just a warm up :)
@Niiiiization it is incredible due to the fact that they didn't taper for that meet
I decided to respond to your comment, forgive me for not responding to every single comment on the page. I was not offended that you disagreed with me. I am simply attempting to understand what is arrogant about saying that the USA will have to work hard to win the 4x100 free relay in London? please enlighten me
il est pas trop tard pour apprendre ! surtout que tu pourrais voyager et utiliser cette langue avec aisance .
@Niiiiization yea true. but splitting a 41.6 on the 400 relay a pac12's is impressive
Actually not only Australia and Russia have beaten the USA but Sth Africa did also at the olympics.
for me liam tancock is the strongest fastest most suitable shape the best swimmer no one can beat him
@splitkostanjeuma Only one way to find out, they still have some time ahead of them.
FRANCE !!
alright whatever man... i didnt come on here to argue with people. i do respect your opinion, the rest doesnt matter. im sure it will be an exciting race this summer, no matter the outcome. have a nice day

Daniel Culyer But that was from a relay start, so they have an advantage. Its not a real time
more exactly is 47.12 but that was anchor split which you could shave a little time from the standing start, not the lead-off time.
Top 100 freestyler as Nathan Adrian always go under 47 second with anchor role.

i love his accent

Wow, great relay race.
it's time for france in london
Pull the other one mate, it plays jingle bells.
Gilot IS the 4x100freestyle
@FruitarianSwimster yeah i guess we'll see where magnussen is pretty soon at the trials
hey guys!! my time 50 m free style is 30 sec and i m 13 years.. is it good?? and i m not a regular swimmer.. do u think that by regular swimming i can improve it? and compete at national level?
oh..dont get me wrong..!!...i WANT australia to win the 4x1free and they are definitely the favourite.
We already saw that now.
Domination by a wealthy country with a large population with peace and prosperity is a normal event usually in any event. The times, though, they are a changing. usama! Yes thats great speed. keep it up
thanx man!!
2:43 yehh..
@splitkostanjeuma Now remind me who has the world record time for the 100... Filho or Magnussen? ;)
To put the times you put here in to some sort of semblance or common sense, the fastest split in history for a man in a textile suit was done LAST YEAR in 47.49 by James Magnussen ( NOT an American) so stop waffling!

i dont know if david nolan is fast enough yet. he only goes like a 42 in scy
@spicychicken2000 he definitely cannot go a 47. no american has even gone under a 48 yet. david nolan im sure is more focused on his IM and back than the free. only other option for US is ricky berens, jimmy feigan, or matt grevers. lets see what they can do at trials
@luanswan2002 he has the fastest time in the world..i think your the one that is doped up
+ Webber gale and why not a great Berens or Grevers or even Lochte ! Us has a lot of possibilities . I beleive Usa will match for the last 400 relay of M phelps . jeaaah
@nehamapeter I think nolan is too young, and judging how he did at nationals at palo alto I don't think he will make the olympic team. Go australia
@wasdom01 You're welcome.
Sullivan did not blow it - he came home first didn't he? Isn't that the point of the exercise?
agreed
A U S T R A L I A !
45.3 is how fast a seal swims bro...
@CoDWiiPS3Gameplay but idk i could be completely wrong thats just my opinion
@CoDWiiPS3Gameplay Lol he went a 47.6. i doubt he's going to be a contender for the relay this year
Only one way to find out... ;)
he is : 47.33
Nice racing Aussies from USA. ;)
U.S. will have to do better than this at London. This wasn't bad but it has to be SUPERIOR for the Olympics. It will get more difficult than this so the U.S. better up their game in this event.
Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi
what's the name of this commentator?
australia is taking this even in london. im calling it lol. the french lost bernard so yeah there goes their lead-off
@Aakos94 Hmm yes, he's good enough to be in the relay.
Very rarely the outside guys win.
i hope they will challenge the world record...
I swam against him many times in Texas, fast as hell!
i have no idea what that means.
Mate you are incredibly misinformed. Magnussen should be able to go sub 47 from a flat start assuming he's healthy (he did have the flu at trials when he went 47.1) but that may or may not happen. how to tag time man..?
country*
Australia should win!!

no...not the 4x100m
pero ahora gano australia
just type in the number you want to go to with the colon in it..ex: 1:23
@nehamapeter Lezgo Jimmy Feigan
David Walters : 47.33 in the prelims relay ! learn to hear bro .
australia... what happened
men peak physically at about age 22
phelps swam 100m quite good with a time of 48.08...he would be able to win a medal (bronze maybe) in 100 freestyle if he planned for coming back in Rio, of course he must focus on trainning it instead of IM, butterfly
48.08 in relay doesn’t count cuz you can time the start, 48.50 is close to reality
And then a willd Agnel apears!!! Lol im a Rasmussen fan but he swimmed so bad in London relay
Sullivan almost blew it......anyhow, what a start for Australia! amazing first 100
How the fuck did he ‘almost blow it’ when he had the 2nd fastest split in the team🙄
hes never come as closer to that time than magnussen without a suit! - just saying
3:35
pretty sure seals can swim faster than a 45.3 in 100m
I'm a very small swimming fan? I've been swimming competitively for 11 years my friend, I know my stuff. dude dont tell us the results!
@pipisthegreat ..lol...me too..a scot?
pff I think he would do much better he has heart =]
@FruitarianSwimster 1 word...suit
we don't care flat start in a relay !
ok, honestly i was not trying to insult you. for some reason, possibly by your word choice, or your use of an "!" i thought you were, as i said, worked up. i was just trying to explain the other person's point of view, perhaps to give you a different way to think about it. really i thought just helping someone out. please do not accuse me of being close minded, when i was simply attempting to give you a different perspective. also, please stop committing dicto simplicitors . siempre gana estados unidos
irish..!!..i initially thought scottish. Its quite sexy nonetheless
Wont win it with your guess then!
your post is totally inaccurate.
