I'm from Newfoundland, Canada. We have a Christmas tradition called Mummering; people dress up with their faces covered and go door to door asking if "Any Mummers 'loud in?". The occupant invites the Mummers in who then proceed to do a dance or play a song for a drink and a snack. The occupants of the house must guess who each Mummer is. If the mummer is correctly identified, they show their face. It's great fun and a wonderful Christmas memory. Thank you for sharing, stay safe and Merry Christmas!
I commented earlier and then I showed your channel to my husband. He wanted to add that this story really reminded him of an old Monty Python and the Flying Circus, bit, of when the knights rode their pretend horses.
I like "Bard" since it is an old Norse name appearing in Irish, Gaelic and English culture and means "singer, poet, musician" . Your Hoodening Horse looks like a fancy minstrel.
Absolutely loved the history of the hoodening horse. We must keep up ancient traditions. Your horse was wonderful. Please do more of this kind of video ,superb. Please keep well, you wonderful family.
I like Woden for his name, with a nod to his possible relationship to the god Odin, and to the wood they were mostly carved from. Love this fascinating look into history!👏👏👍🇦🇺
What a fascinating tradition 👍🏻. I love to hear and learn of old historical traditions from other countries and their origins. Miss Kate, your hoodening horse looks very much like a medieval artifact 🙌🏻. Well done, sister-friend!!! The ancient forest you filmed in had a touch of "Sleepy Hollow"( the movie) look to the gnarled trees🙊🙈. Lovely reading, Fleur...you weave a good yarn👍🏻😉.
My favorite horse growing up was Sundown, but he looks more like a grey horse, so I would call him Cloud or Thundercloud. Sundown was a buckskin, so not as bright as a palomino, but still a lovely dark gold color. (Sorry, I'm in the U.S. and that's how we spell it!)
Great video you ladies are very creative. I always look at what you have and think, “really they’re going to make something out of that.” Then I eat my words because what you make ends up looking lovely.
The hooded hobby-horse was popular in parts of the Antipodes settled by Anglo/Celts. I think this continued well into the 1950's, according to the old folk. I wonder if the armoured war horses of the mediaeval cavalry had any influence on the origin of the tradition. Lovely video.
A very interesting tradition I hadn't heard of, but aspects of it are similar to the Christmas tradition of Mummering, on my home island of Newfoundland. Also, what a beautiful old wood of giant gnarled trees.
Brilliant story! Enjoyed as always! A very creative horse 🐎 I couldn't help from noticing that some of your huge trees 🌳 are good contenders for Sleepy Hollow...I kept waiting for the headless horseman to ride out of one! 😳Be safe and healthy 😷Take care! Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏻🎁❤️
Technically one of the best videos, the story as a voice over with a walk in the fields , blended very well, & easily followable...& The Hooden Horse came out awesome looking , like a legendary Viking warrior's horse..👏 Thought, "Horus" name suited him!🎉🎇🎊🎀🌷🖐️
Well done, loved sven the hoodening horse broach (sorry about the spelling) I think he should have a Viking name so sven, maybe? Looking forward to seeing your next video, stay safe and well, much love and blessings to you and your family 🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️☃️☃️☃️☃️🎄🎄🎄🌹🌹🌹🌹🌟🌟🌟🇦🇺
Liebe Fleur liebe Kate, Eine wunderbare Geschichte, schöne Tradition. In dieser schrecklichen Zeit oft die einzige Freude. Danke für alles. Bitte bleibt gesund Schöne Weihnachten. Ps: Mein Name für das Pferd wäre Hope. Denn Hoffnung ist das was uns am Leben hält.
I rather like Oden myself. Your ornaments are so lovely. I saw your garlands too. I like the folk/primitive style myself :) Merry Christmas to all of you and the very best of New Years
Norman, for the North/Norse man, or Oden. It's amazing how you take bits, and pieces to make these adorable crafts. Love learning about the old traditions, folk lore, and history of England/Wales. Hope you have the best of Christmas, and New Years.
Ladies, You did a fine job of relaying the different versions of the "hoodening horse". Thought it might make me sad, because of my Love for animals, , but I braced myself because of Kit's heads up and You Kate, managed to make him festive, as well as Beautiful. When I saw you cutting off the gold ribbon with the tassel at the end, I was thinking what a lovely tail that would be for him, giving the impression of a whole horse, with his tail swishing about for his admirerers during his appearances. These old traditions are interesting indeed. : )
That was a fascinating story thank you for that.and the horse is great.you both have a wonderfull way of making things with what you have found great imagination.
I'm a year late, but thanks so much for sharing the story of the hoodening horse. It sounds a lot like halloween, but near to the solstice. Maybe just an excuse for country folk to dress up and do something out of the ordinary, when most of their lives would have been rural drudgery.
I’ve never heard of this tradition before, but I love it! It should definitely be revived around Christmas 😁 I can only think of 2 names for the horse... Either Dobin Hood (Robin Hood), or Ken for his Kent heritage.
The way you have crafted the sackcloth, gave me the idea to call your hooden horse: "burnous" ( which in fact is a long hooded cloak that moroccan horsemen wear while practicing a traditional cavalry powder game). Happy christmas.🤗
I just received the most glorious, precious hand crafted angel!! She is wonderful, and I will treasure her always. Thant you for the extras! I will have to try some crafting of my own ☺️
Love the history of the Hoodening Horse . Your Crafted one is Perfect ! I'd Like a name like Lancelot or Merlin , perhaps from the Camelot Legends . Maybe Excelsior would give the Horse a Magical Quality ! On Second thought a name from the Harry Potter Series might be even Better . Maybe in Honor of Snape ! I Loved Snape's Character . He was Brilliant ! Merry MudMas to you all and all your Loved Ones. Stay Well Stay Safe , and Carpe Diem . Happy 2021 to All !
Your hooden horse is beautiful and the story fascinating, thank you. I’m inspired to look up some of our local traditions it will be a good distraction from lockdown. Stay safe over the Thames🙏
That was fascinating! I some northern areas of England they have a character called 'Red Hoss' (I think) where a man wears a horse head with snapping jaws. I believe he turns up in Pace egg plays or Mumming plays. I would have to do more research but it's something like that. Kate did a great job on the Hoodening horse! 😃 x
On Time Team I saw a "dragon -like" thing the Roman's used in battle. The earlier pictures in your vlog reminded me of that "war machine". I heard about the variant of coronavirus I hope you all stay safe and healthy.
I loved this video. The history was something I wasn't aware of. I hope you do more. The scenery was so relaxing and beautiful to me. You both have such nice voices. Another special ability that you both have.
Kent from where he was originated from . Just a regular name . Kent. Beautiful work on him . Love the history too. I never hard of the hoodening horse , but found the story very interesting. Thank you .👍❤🙂
Love stories like the hoodering horse. I'd call him woode or woody. I've seen an original Welsh one years ago in a Welsh castle. The history was very similar to the Kentish story. If you have any more stories associated with ancient Kent traditions, I would love to hear them while you craft. Stay safe, us in the Northwest are no better off, they say we can have Christmas day, most people I've spoken to have decided to stay at home, and continue to stay safe, as our area hadn't been out of tier 3 since May! Take care. :-)
Your Hoodening horse is charming! Maybe name him "Jor" which is Old Norse for horse. Always interesting to learn about local folk traditions and then try to figure out their derivations.
Love the hoodening horse .i was born in Derbyshire so can relate somewhat to some of the story. The name that came immediately to me for him was Vallarian .Love this video . Blessed solstice to you all xx
I live in Whitstable the last home of the Hoodening Horse. when i worked at the local school the horse did it's dance in the play ground snapping it's mouth the kid's loved it. I think call him Bubbles as in Whistbubble.stay safe....V....
Thanks for yet another wonderful video and story ladies, entertaining and informative as usual Your little homage to the story turned out beautifully, very regal. I would simply call him Mr Mudmas this year and then give him a new name each year about this time.
Hmm... well, it might surprise you to know that the practice is far from "extinct" - Hoodening is alive and kicking (our own team has been together for over half a century, and we still use the same Hooden Horse our forefathers did before us, going around the village around the time of winter solstice). This year due to Covid we could only do a virtual performance, but we still did it - the tradition continues. See www.hoodening.org.uk for details (and bit.ly/Hooden2020 specifically for this year's video, although it will only still be up for a few more days). Incidentally, the hooden horse is *dark* (in colour) - an important difference from the white horse of Kent.
From Norse Mythology ~ names for your horse Alf- for a King Alvis- means 'all wise' Balder- means 'prince' in old Norse Frey- God of fertility, sunlight, and rain Magni- 'mighty or strong' Sigrun- 'secret and victory'
I do love history, and I enjoyed this tale! Your hoodening horse is amazing. He looks very regal, don't you think? Perhaps his name should be Aleksander!🎄💖
Wonderful backstory on the Hoodening Horse. And yours is adorable:) Thanks as always for what you do and sharing. In reading some of the suggestions for names, I like Loki:)

Which is based on an English folk custom.
I commented earlier and then I showed your channel to my husband. He wanted to add that this story really reminded him of an old Monty Python and the Flying Circus, bit, of when the knights rode their pretend horses.
A new life for a horse that was lost. Shining in all his glory!
Reborn on the solstice , how fitting! Have a safe Christmas ladies, maybe you should call him, Solstice tiers....
my husband has viking and english blood in their family they are quite proud of. so this is nice story zi think my husband would love❤️
Great video, hooden horse is great. I played with hobby horses a lot as a small child.
I like "Bard" since it is an old Norse name appearing in Irish, Gaelic and English culture and means "singer, poet, musician" . Your Hoodening Horse looks like a fancy minstrel.

The ancient forest you filmed in had a touch of "Sleepy Hollow"( the movie) look to the gnarled trees🙊🙈. Lovely reading, Fleur...you weave a good yarn👍🏻😉.
I like the hoodening horse that you made and love the story of the history behind it. I think you could call him Frode. Viking for Wise and clever

I looked up old Viking names and this is the first name that jumped out at me - Eyfrod.
Your Hoodening horse is beautiful So much prettier than years ago. I think some of the older ones looked scary 😅

The Norse festival for "Christmas" was called JOL. Later spelled YULE
JOL would be an appropriate name 😊
Happy Holidays to all of you. You’ve brightened my year with your wonderful videos! Thank you!
Interesting history. Some of my ancestors are from Kent, so this is really interesting to me.
Oh how I Lived this story. It made me cry as I knew my late mother would have enjoyed the story. Horus is such a good name.
We like the idea of JOL...being very appropriate. Thanks.
Love it, sort of creepy but fascinating. Loving the history, name for the horse could be Hoody. Love your stuff as always, loving mudmass.
Very lovely!! Thank you ❤️😊

Especially a grey horse.
I loved this video. The history was something I wasn't aware of. I hope you do more. The scenery was so relaxing and beautiful to me. You both have such nice voices. Another special ability that you both have.
Good job, love your channel.
His fabrics and coloring reminds me of a Court Jester. Therefore, I suggest "Jester" 😊
Ah, Kent. Then call him Dover, the supreme importance of which is apparent to all but Raab. Today even more so. Love your films X
Kent from where he was originated from . Just a regular name . Kent. Beautiful work on him . Love the history too. I never hard of the hoodening horse , but found the story very interesting. Thank you .👍❤🙂

How interesting ! Harold the Hoodening Horse
I like the name of my Icelandic Viking cousin...Ivar! Fun video, thank you!
Love when you two share history. Very well done.
Utterly fascinating! Thank you for introducing us to this tradition. Your hoodening horse turned out incredibly detailed.
So interesting! I always thought it was a Hooden Horse because the horse-bearer wore it like a hood as he hid beneath it! haha
That would be a likely origin for the name.
How fascinating your old traditions! Love the horse. Stay warm. Stay safe. Hug Sunny. 🥰🥰🥰
Oh lovely, perhaps Oden for a loosening horse. Thank you for sharing.
You guys have the most amazing history. Hope you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year with more amazing finds.
Rene, the Hood!
The trees you featured were so beautiful! Such beauty even in the Winter. Such wonderful story tellers you both are.
Wonderful vid as usual. Thank you xx ❤🐱❤
