  • Ethan is off somewhere dusting his fanny packs, so we've invited Elliot Richards from @Fully Charged Show and @China Driver to help us answer a very important question: can a Chinese car possibly embody the same qualities as a premium German vehicle? We're going to find out, through the power of science!

    It's amazing to see the cars being produced in China and all the features they offer as standard. The rest of the automotive market should be worried because when these Chinese automakers start going global it is going to put pressure on the OEMs especially when you compare features you get at a lower price point on the Chinese vehicles. The Audi in this video just looks dated compared to the Voyah Free.

    Now, aside from the funny vibe from this video, it cannot be unseen how far especially Volkswagen is behind in terms of digital services and infotainment. Yes, the Audi Q5 is a few years old now, but even latest Audi and VW models have infotainment and interior architecture that doesn't go far beyond what we see here. This is alarming. While yes, some might say "it's just screens and they just display different things" and yes, that's true, and ultimately you can absolutely live without a retractable screen wall in front of you, but since the world is going all digital and (from my understanding) especially in China there is a HIGH demand for up to date digital services and interface design, this is simply years behind in development.
    While in home markets like here in Germany, people are fine with paying more for a car with less features, just to feel the 'premium' atmosphere, I doubt that this will be a viable business model in markets like China in the future. So either they get going or they get eaten.

    It's rather biased to compare a 6 year-old petrol Audi with a brand new Chinese-market electric car.
    Of course the Audi will have a less modern and spacious interior, with more buttons and less technology.
    Of course it will ride stiffer, as China is still quite rural and the Voyah is designed for that.
    I don't blame these guys for taking Chinese money, but the spin is a little too obvious to convince Western audiences.

      The Voyah is actually 2 years old. Haven't been selling too well in China (1,225 were delivered in October, compared to the 714,000 NEVs sold in total - out of which 1/3 were BYDs) as it's often derided as lacking an identity among the fierce competition. Still doing better than most of the Germans in the same segment like the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Mercedes EQC (575 and 104 units were delivered last month respectively), but not as good as the BMW iX3 (2,592). Nope, the Chinese are not drawn in a feverish nationalistic drive to support local brands: the ICE offerings from the German luxury brands have a diehard following and are still selling in tens of thousands (the Q5L alone sold 9,801 units last month). Truth to be told, the German EVs are just not as competitive as local rivals in the Chinese market, at least for now.
      About the ride - having driven around a lot, I can guarantee you that China has the best road, superbly built and maintained, even in the most remote, trafficless corners of the vast nation. The infrastructure (and the moeny spent) is just insane. The Voyah has a softer ride, most likely because it has air suspension.

    The Chinese car tech is very cool. But physical buttons are way better to use and the quality of the German engines would be superior to that of the Chinese car. Your paying for the engineering as well with a German car. Also looks alot nicer.

      It is starting to change, and the German brands need to be very afraid of that fact. I tried to convince my Chinese boomer aged FIL who was in the market for a car to get one of these hot new EVs like a NIO or Li ONE, but he spent a load of money on a gas powered Merc SUV instead. But the younger generations in China who are also now in the market for cars are buying Teslas and even domestic Chinese brands in droves, and far less tied to the prestige of a German badge.

    • @tren133
      @tren133 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Modern Classic Collectables Sure I guess my retired FIL still holds to those German brands, but this will likely be the last car he'll ever purchase new. Merc and BMW literally earns as much as 50% of their profits from that generation of older Chinese buyers, but they are all aging out of the market, and the hundreds of millions of younger Chinese consumers are nowhere near as tied to those prestige brands. They are flocking to Tesla and NIO showrooms, while overpriced Mercedes EVs languish in dealer lots in China. So the big German brands better hope to get their act together or else their Chinese golden profit goose goes up in flames.
