Whv does everyone fail to mention the deal breaker on 125a over 125? The 125a does not have audio over usb. Yamaha eliminated it! You need to correct this eliminated Fact.

@@rtobin1374 This "shrinkflation" is entirely Yamaha's fault and I doubt any dealers or customers demanded less functionality for more money. Deleting functions without reducing the price is bad enough but Yamaha then chose to deceive both dealers and customers about what they had done. Yamaha could have posted complete informaton for both keyboards on their site but they chose to create the illusion that the P-125a has more functionality than the P-125. The deception is more troubling than the "shrinkflation" because we no longer know what to believe from that company. Accurate information is contained in the manuals and it is clear that the two digital pianos are almost identical but an important feature is missing from the P-125a. The dealers had no part in that and are just victims like the rest of us.

Just bought it and am considering sending it back. Not only is there no audio over USB but, in truth, the sounds with the exception of one of the piano variations, are hugely inferior to those in the 10-year old Casio CDP-120 I’ve worn out and need to replace. The keyboard feels great and is very quiet, but everything feels cheap and plasticky.

The Yamaha P-125a is the same instrument as the P-125, except that Yamaha removed the USB audio interface. By the way, the P-125 does have Damper Resonance, Stereo Sustain Samples, Keyoff Samples, and String Resonance (check the manual). The P-115 was released in April 2015, the P-125 was released in April 2018... the true successor of the P-125 is likely to be released in April 2023.

Great video Ted thanks so much (love listening to you play!)
Just editing my original post; the P-125a is exactly the same as the P-125 except the audio interface has been removed from the P-125a (the review says L/R line outs are new in the P-125a; they are not, they were in the P-125 as well).
As Instrumental-Covers has mentioned you can see this in the manual on Yamaha's site on pages 23/24. And I actually went and tested this in a store on a P-125a (brought in my iPhone and a USB cable with lightning adapter), and can confirm this is the case - you can no longer stream audio in to the piano, nor can you stream direct audio out to a device to make an audio recording. This is especially bad given that Yamaha didn't even add in an Aux in port to at least allow you to stream in audio to play along with (backing tracks, TH-cam, online piano lessons etc).
Here's looking forward to the P-135 (hopefully soon!)

    • @Instrumental-Covers

The P-125 and the P-125a are the same instrument, there is no upgrade on the CF engine. Yamaha does not make such claims. Please check both manuals on pages 23 and 24:
      1) On page 24, the P-125 states:
      "Playback/Recording of Audio Data
      (USB audio interface)
You can play back audio data on a smart device or a
computer with this instrument. You can also record
your keyboard performance as audio data to a music
production app on a smart device or a computer.
When using this function on a computer running Windows, you will need to install the Yamaha Steinberg
      USB Driver to your computer"
      2) On page 24, the P-125a states:
"Only MIDI can be transmitted/received from/to this instrument. No audio data can be transmitted/received"
Yamaha is very clear about this. It is printed on their manuals. You don't need to rely on keyboard product specialists for this information.
If you remember, a few months ago Yamaha was posting a warning in their website about bugs when using some of the features of several instruments.
The P-125a is clearly not the upgrade to the P-125. Upgrades always have new features and change the model number.

Great review! I played one of these today. I thought an MX88 synth might suffice until I realize the speakers, feel, sound, half price, and simplicity of this model are superior to me. I think I'll buy one soon. I like that it comes with the option to have a traditional sturdier stand and pedals as well. The p515 is twice as heavy as this p-125. When I need drums, more sounds, I can plug in for MIDI/software synth.

Hi Mike. The P-125a seems to be addressing an issue of compatibility with some apps that was reported in the Yamaha website a few months ago. This is not an improvement over the P125, nor it is a case of higher price. The P series will likely receive an upgrade next year. As you know, new models always change the number and companies announce the improvements. Yamaha hasn't changed the model number nor they have announced any improvements. If they have done this almost 4 years later, after the model was released, they must have a reason for it that we are not aware of. The best course of action would be to contact Yamaha directly to hear what they have to say.

I am going to make a separate comment about the issue of the P-125 vs P-125a and what makes them different: it is simply the removal of the audio interface. I will cite both manuals verbatim, so you don't need to rely on other people's opinions or impressions. You can check this information on page 24 of both manuals:
    1) On page 24, the P-125 states:
    "Playback/Recording of Audio Data
    (USB audio interface)
You can play back audio data on a smart device or a
computer with this instrument. You can also record
your keyboard performance as audio data to a music
production app on a smart device or a computer.
When using this function on a computer running Windows, you will need to install the Yamaha Steinberg

    2) On page 24, the P-125a states:
"Only MIDI can be transmitted/received from/to this instrument. No audio data can be transmitted/received"
Yamaha is very clear about this. It is printed on their manuals.
A few months ago Yamaha was posting a warning in their website about bugs when using some of the features of several instruments.
The P-125a is clearly not the upgrade to the P-125, but it rather seems to be temporarily addressing an issue. Upgrades always have new features and change the model number. There will likely be an upgrade to this model next year around April, if Yamaha maintains the pattern observed in P-115 and P-125.

    • @islandtony5009
      @islandtony5009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hey thanks so much for that. When the 125a was first announced I looked at the manual on their site, but it was the 125 manual (and identical); now I see they have the 125a manual up which does state that clearly. And the Yamaha rep was clearly incorrect, but all good.
So no, not an upgrade, actually a downgrade - kind of a shame; not sure what the bugs were - I had a P125 for a year and used that feature all the time, with and without Smart Pianist, and I never encountered any issues with recording or streaming audio or MIDI. Oh well, looking forward to the P-135!

The ultimate gigging DP is a full-blooded stage piano, not a portable piano, but on the easier gigs, the best of the portable pianos can do a good job. I only have a portable piano (P-255) but it has a simple screen and enough fingertip controls to get me through my modest gigs very handsomely. For me, the physical 3-band equaliser is very important.
The technologies sometimes overlap, even on price. Interestingly, the inexpensive Korg D1 has a screen, a robust case and connectivity all worthy of a stage piano, and it costs much less than many portable pianos. It does lack some functionality though - such as keyboard splits/zones. And no, it doesn't have built-in speakers or USB, but those last two things aren't required much on stage pianos.
If you play mainly simple piano patches and need to fly a lot, the D1 is the one to take. It's rugged and won't cost much to replace if it is destroyed anyway. It probably has the best action available on a piano under 1100 US dollars, but it costs much less than that.
