      The latter is correct. I didn't know either, but that's how the ASUS folks pronounce it in all the official Asus videos. I used to pronounce it same as rogue, as I thought it sounded cooler.
      I was just struggling with the control modes last night while setting up the melonDS emulator, until I also realized that I had to switch modes back and forth to configure the controls. Once I had it set up, Mario Kart worked great, while only sipping about 10W from the battery. Of course the Wii (and higher) versions of Mario Kart look much better, but I was just testing the melonDS emulator.

    8:45 is why these Windows / SteamOS handhelds will always be niche devices that are primarily for adults. The people saying the Steam Deck was a "Switch killer" are out of their mind. You can literally open up a brand new Switch and be playing a game in less than five minutes. Even the Steam Deck, which is one of the easier handhelds to set up, took over a half an hour with all the updates, game downloads, logins, launcher integration, etc. Plus fiddling with settings to get the best battery life out of it is a constant headache, where on the Switch, you just pick up and play.

    • @djfresh826
      @djfresh826 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your so right about that. The handheld pc market will stay Niche for a bit more. Its not ready for mainstream market as of yet. We are still in the early stages. Still amazing to see AAA titles running on these handheld pcs. Great time to be a gamer.

    • @dannycampbell7294
      @dannycampbell7294 ปีที่แล้ว

      switch can't handle AAA games, you cant even play call of duty 😅! sd and rog dont take that long to set up and once you have your good to go and can also play switch games

    • @OurFantasyLife
      @OurFantasyLife ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dannycampbell7294 I get all my games legally, and I already have a Switch, so there's no need or desire for me emulate.
      The Switch not having any "AAA" games doesn't really matter to me since I despise Call of Duty and the main games I want the Switch for are all first party Nintendo games. Glad you enjoy your ROG though!

    • @Jaxv3r
      @Jaxv3r ปีที่แล้ว

      It only took me just one OS update, and a few game download, also are you talking about other launchers like Xbox and EGS? Yeah that's kinda take a while.

    • @OurFantasyLife
      @OurFantasyLife ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jaxv3r My experience might have been skewed because I tried the Aya Neo Air, not the ROG Ally, but setting things up was a nightmare. The Steam Deck was far easier. It looks like ASUS has baked in some custom software to make things easier though. I think I still prefer the ease of use of the Steam Deck but I'm glad there are so many great options coming out finally.
      How has your experience been with Game Pass on the Ally?

    Note to everyone with a ROG Ally. The default power profiles use aggressively low fan speeds and therefore heat becomes an issues at 30w especially for SD cards. You get stutters and you are far from max performance at 30w.
    Make your own cooling profiles. I use aggressive fan speeds that hit 100% at 80c. I can use 40w profiles this way when plugged in and get even more performance. You can get 30w when not plugged in with manual profiles, but then battery life becomes an issue.
    I am playing Hogwarts at 40w staying under 85c on medium settings with 40-50 FPS. Nothing beats this handheld right now. I have 4 handhelds including 2 6800u's and the Steamdeck. My Steamdeck cost about the same price and my 6800u handhelds were both over $1k. Viewed through my lens, the Ally is a bargain when actually compared to competitors.

    Ive had mine just a few hrs shy of a week now. My openbox deal was a bust but my exchange for new unit has been great. Im mainly a switcher x boxer or clouder. I went into this expecting nothing but problems. I love my device. I keep it at 18 watts and adjust whatever game i throw at it. Rarely go over 60c. Playing mw2 at over 100 fps on 720 maxed out isnt a sacrifice to me its a huge convenience. 6 kids, restaurant manager usually working, got into gaming when i got sober 4 years ago. Hope this device holds out as i am loving it and issues are super minimal. Mainly lack of windows knowledge but the Internet is your friend there.

The one way it might make sense is theyre getting the public to do thier final play testing which might be a little more useful than a regiment of corporateers pulling up to the end of a multi year slog

    One thing I have noticed. I was playing some indie games on both my Steam Deck and Ally. I made sure to play the same game and set both to 15 w TDP. I was playing the exact same game. The Ally keeps the system at 15 w and I got a bit above an hour of playtime. The Steam Deck regulates the wattage and I was getting nearly 3 hrs of play time. I know that I could have tweaked the Ally, lowering the TDP manually, but the Steam Deck just did it. Thus I will continue to use my Steam Deck for most things and switch to my Ally for the more demanding stuff…battery life matters.

    Why isn't there a single reviewer that points out the Steam Deck's battery life is significantly longer than the Ally? They all say the Ally has a short battery life but the Deck does too. None of them mention that the Deck gets about double the battery life on average.

    • @JasonRetribution

      Specifically with much lowered TDP where you're only playing very old games and indies.

    • @LawlessNate
      @LawlessNate ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonRetribution Nope. The Deck gives better battery life across the board. With the Ally if you max it out it can die from a full charge in about 45 minutes. With the Deck if you absolutely max it out it will die in about an hour and a half. Conversely, if you set the power as low as you can to play seriously undemanding games the Ally seems to get about 4 hours where the Deck can get 7 or 8. Just about everything in between scales the same way. For the most part, other than when the Ally is at a higher TDP and outperforms the Deck then the Deck will either give the same performance at a lower TDP or give better performance at the same TDP.
      Keep in mind that when you set the TDP that depending on certain factors the device might be operating at a TDP lower than what you set. When you have the Deck set to a TDP of 15 but the game is usually only getting the Deck to run at about a TDP of 10 then you will get better battery life than if you set the Ally at a TDP of 15 because it's actually having to run at that TDP of 15 to compete. Obviously, I made up those numbers to make the point.

      Steam deck was cool and yea the battery life is better at the cost of worse performance across the board… but hey it has its advantages.. but if you actually played on the ally’s 120hz display then you wouldn’t care that much about battery life and would just wait for a deck mate for the ally because ITS THAT GOOD

    • @LawlessNate
      @LawlessNate ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bandzzman1224 The Ally doesn't have better performance across the board; it has better performance only if you're maxing it out on power draw and therefore get about an hour of battery life. The instant you decide you don't want to hop from one power outlet to the next and therefore lower the graphics you end up with essentially a Steam Deck except no track pads, fewer reprogrmmable buttons, all of that Windows Jank, and a shorter battery life. The Ally is a more-portable laptop with a crappy battery whereas the Deck is a truly portable device.

I hate how it looks running at 80 or 97 fps. I’d rather knock it down to 60 and save some electricity. I get so annoyed when my friends turn off the limiter on games because it gives them 10 more fps when they are at 120 already.

    I think its an amazing machine but good god windows is still horrible and janky. I haven't used windows in a few years but its just as bad as i remember. I really dont get how windows can be so janky after being around for 30 to 40 years. You would think they would have it figured out by now. Once you are in a game this thing runs great though. Besides windows and battery life this thing is a beast.

      Most games you bought on Xbox you can't download on PC. Kinda bullshit I bought cyberpunk,dead space and a few other games on Xbox and I can't play them on the ROG ally. I would have to purchase them on steam now because the games are not available on Microsoft store for PC. A couple of my games did transfer but not many.

    The Deck chip is a custom chip designed to get the best performance at low TDP while the Ally chip is just a 7840u with some changes which is designed as a general purpose laptop apu run between 15-30 TDP. It's mainly designed for ultra thin and light laptops. Both the Deck and Ally are limited to 16 GB ram total.
    My almost 4 year old gaming laptop still get better performance than both the Deck and Ally. Neither of these handhelds are ideal for playing the most demanding PC/console games.

    Not only in other markets are steam decks available in a store, but the Z1 extreme Ally is cheaper than a 64GB steam deck also. I guess it shows how much official distribution makes a difference.
    While I understand the out of box windows startup is lame for something a lot of people just want to play games on, people need to understand that this is what pc hardware is. You’re buying a pc.
    I do hope microsoft make some changes to windows but I won’t hold my breath for now

      If I'm not mistaken, Steam Deck 512gb would cost about the same as ROG Ally Z1 Extreme in Australia but Steam Deck isn't even officially released in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore yet. Crazy. Anyway, I read somewhere that Microsoft is 'developing' Windows for handheld device. Don't know if it's true though.

    Just bought it. Amazing after the initial annoying pain in the ass setup and updates. This beast is not for the newbie that does not know how to install updates or mess with bios. This is not play a play out of the box system. This is get it out of the box and be frustrate by bugs and shit that you need to do updates after updates and mess with settings before you get a good thing. If you succeed you will be rewarded. TH-cam is your friend. Oh and the two hours battery life playing at 15W is bullshit. I play Diablo 4 and it does not last two hours and I play at 15W so the battery is weak.
