    I bought 4 feet of 3/16 cable, put loops in both ends using the metal cable crimps from the ACE Hardware. One loop i permanently attached to the Honda helmet holder and the other end passes through 2 helmets and even 2 jackets, then into the bottom of the helmet holder before i plug it into the grab handle. Works great. Yes sure someone could take wire cutters or bolt cutters to the cable in 15 seconds, but who does that? This is just a deterrent if you run into a store or restaurant. I wouldn't leave my Shoei helmet attached overnight in a hotel parking lot - for those cases i bring the helmet inside. Total cost was $5 at ACE for the cable and crimps, and I didn't need to grind the chrome off my helmet holder which will eventually cause it to rust.

    In Europe most helmets don't even have D-rings and have moved to the more modern micrometric systeem (also called quick release). Totally incompatible with this Honda thingy.

    With wire cutting pliers seems to me those cables are not much of a deterrent...would be nice if you do a video showing just how resistant those cables are. Good videos, but no need to show 3 minutes of grinding a piece of metal ;-)

    Is there anyway to mount the original helmet hanger from pre 2018 into the 2018+ trunk?

    • @Traxxion
      @Traxxion  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people have home-brewed this setup. It's not easy, and requires a high level of fabrication skill.

  • @DubuqueDude

    I agree the helmet lock is a fail. But, you can fit two helmets with coms in the trunk. I do it all the time with 2 full face Bell qualifiers and sena smh10's. The helmets need to face backwards with the chinbars pointed towards the trunk latch.

    • @Asidebar
      @Asidebar ปีที่แล้ว

      The trunk is for clothing and other items .

  • @Asidebar

    Use a padlock with cable and loop it through helmet and the passenger handle bar.

  • @jamesbottger5894
    @jamesbottger5894 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A pair of side cutters and that small diameter coiled cable is toast. Like DubuqueDude said, 2 full face helmets will fit in the trunk, so there's really not need for this helmet holder. This video is nice though because the instructions in the manual aren't much help for installing it...

    • @Traxxion
      @Traxxion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you got 2 full face helmets into the trunk you would be the only person to accomplish that! The 2021 does have room to accomodate 2 helmets, after enough complaints from owners. However, that doens't help people with a loaded trunk who are actually travelling with the bike and don't want to carry their helmets.

      @jamesbottger5894 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Traxxion Sorry, I was talking about the '21 model. You are correct, 2 full face helmets will not fit in the '18-'20 trunk...

    Had to chuckle at your video. Before I bought my new Goldwing, the sales rep was showing me around the bike. When he got to the helmet lock, my immediate reaction was, that is dumb. I knew I would have to find a work around so appreciate you showing us at least one option. I also watched your other video on an idea for aftermarket grab rails you are considering. Any thought to utilizing the current release mechanism, in a smarter fashion, or will you just bypass it?

  • @G56AG
    @G56AG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The aftermarket will have to solve this. I wouldn't want to grind on the locking tab, grind the chrome off and its going to rust when it rains.

    • @G56AG
      @G56AG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leave my helmet locked to the bike in pouring rain? Never have, never will, there's plenty of room in the trunk of my 2005 GL1800, if I'm traveling and its full or if I had a new bike, I'd take it with me. But I have no doubt that the aftermarket will figure this out, just like your business fixes Honda's shortcomings suspension wise. There are lots of entrepreneurs out there working on improvements to the new bike right now.

    Not defending the design or execution of this "feature" but I think how well it works depends a lot on the helmet.
    Helmets with short tie straps may be more difficult.

    Your right, helmet lock system worst I've ever seen! The rear seat position gives helmet some protection, but your front helmet on rider seat is unsecured! What happens if front helmet get knocked off seat, the coiled cable will uncoil an won't stop helmet from hitting ground? Your system seems best for bike, but again, worst design I've ever seen, an I'm not really happy with coiled cables either! Does Honda advise something we're not seeing here?

  • @n9vjx963
    @n9vjx963 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a real simple solution for you.
    Buy a pair of handcuffs from Amazon for about $15-$20
    The handcuff that would go around your wrist (you know, when you get arrested) will fit through the hole in the black part of the helmet holder.
    Put the other handcuff through the D-Ring in the helmet.
    Done.
    If you don't want that chain, remove the chain that connects the two handcuffs and just use one handcuff to go through the hole in the black part of the helmet holder and the D-ring. Remove the chain so it doesn't scratch the bodywork of let your helmet flop around too much when attached.
    Handcuffs work great as helmet holders on any bike.
