I just recently started watching many of his films, actually doing a sort of marathon. His passing was definitely a triggering factor. I haven't known about him that much except for his MCU support role and A History of Violence. I was always intrigued by how he was nominated three times consecutively for the Academy Awards in the mid-80s. So I started with Broadcast News, which to no surprise was enjoyable, but Children of a Lesser God is arguably one of the best movies out there, and one that I will always recommend. That scene where he pushes co-star Marlee Matlin to a breaking point of speaking broke me. I've never seen nor expected anything of this kind. From there, picking up Altered States, Body Heat, Gorky Park, The Big Chill, and Kiss of the Spider Woman, he immediately jumped to my top 10 favorite actors. Similarly to my favorite actor Denzel Washington, both of them hadn't starred in that many films during the 80s, but their recognition wasn't unheard. Simply, quality of quantity.
As we lose another beloved artist we should take the time to realize our time on Earth is limited and we should make every effort to be kind to each other.
It is with sadness to hear the passing of William Hurt, a superb actor and gentleman. My favorite of his contributions to the arts, in which his acting abilities excelled, was his character in Jane Eyre~ Unforgettable! as well as will be the meaningful life of William Hurt. Dear one, you will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.

Today would have been his birthday. An Equinox child....chosen soul...always between darkness and light. And like a true child of theater...flights of angels will sing him to his rest... We will never forget you!!!

He also did some stage work, like playing Oberon in a Shakespeare play. But from the start, he was an actor to watch, and he was just about the best actor in his films, and more or less stole the movies from everyone else in the cast. We were captivated by his role in the sci-fi thriller Altered States. Then he steamed up the screen in Body Heat with Kathleen Turner. Then he was a wounded 'Nam vet in The Big Chill. Then he did Gorky Park, The Accidental Tourist, The Kiss of the Spider Woman (he won an Oscar for that.), Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News, Alice, the second film version of Dune, Until The End of the World, The Doctor, Michael, Lost In Space, Trial By Jury, A.I., The Village, A History of Violence, Robin Hood, Winter's Tale, and he played General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Hulk movies and Avengers movies. Farewell Mr. Hurt.
William Hurt - a great actor who has accompanied the imagination of several generations especially of the 80's and 90's - with his discreet and persuasive fascination was the icon of a kind of cinema not sensationalist and bombastic but deep in content and prolific in directions. Personally I remember him, among the many exceptional films he starred in, in "Until the End of the World" (1991) by Wim Wenders. What can I say? Thinking about the wonder of those movies makes even more the measure of where we have gone.. really "Until the End of the World!" Thank you William for pointing us to the discreet grace of a dream.

He is the guy who does a 5 minute cameo in a film and gets an Oscar nom for it (A History of Violence) or changes your life with it (Changing Lanes). The man was sheer talent and his performances got into his soul to be able to give the level of performance he does.
William Hurt is and will always be General Ross. Harrison Ford is great but he shouldn't have been cast. Rest the character until they reboot the series
