The first voice acting made laugh. I was like, “ What the fuck? Was that a scream?” Morashige’s “ahhhhh” 😂😂😂😂😂 sounded like he inhaled a balloon of helium and it was pestering out. 😂😂😂😂
Really shows how being number 1 isn't everything, and getting 2nd place is really great too maybe even better as you're motivated to try harder next time. I know a different game which also blew up in popularity despite getting a second place in some game jam, it eventually became quite well known on the internet for better or worse.
this video is an achievement. For a long, long long time, I have been trying to articulate what made this game so terrifying on a personal, psychological, and existential level. You have done it by explaining concrete mechanics and exactly how it creates the sense of atmosphere so ever present and hanging in the game. Congratulations on your analysis, when I get the proper equipment I will be making one of my own!
I like how you called Naomi a deconstruction of a tsundere, but then proceeded to list off the reasons the tsundere archetype became popular throughout the 90s. It's an easy way to create a deeper character that the readers/viewers/players can latch onto right away.
While it *probably* shouldn't have been, Corpse Party was apart of my childhood and it really sparked my interest in this kind of horror. I've only finished the opening part of this video but I can't wait to finish it and then scurry off to your book of shadows video :)
on first playthroughs, i think it's pretty easy to write off most of the ex chapters as "what was the point of this?" but seeing how these ex chapters were included the consumer remake, it was just foreshadowing to the sequels. a lot of the conversations within the ex chapters are directly brought up on the later games, or explain character motives in the future. it'd definitely be interesting to tackle the entire series as whole in the far future. wonderful work on this video!

Many don't know it, but Yuuka is 14 If my source is right. Her age makes her behaviour so weird for me, because I thought the whole time she is 7 or 8.
Corpse Party *was* a horror masterpiece. The first game (CPBCRP: Corpse Party Blood Covered Repeated Fear) already has its completed story with concrete ending. There's no need for sequel or anything.
I love how you emphasized on two occasions, at 37:00 and 41:00, that it is extremely realistic for a man to hopelessly fall for a girl that does something good for him because he will remember it for the rest of his life. Because it is completely true and realistic!
I remember one of my friends recommended it to me on steam and at first i was kinda skeptical about it because im not really a fan of top down games but with corpse party it's definitely one of the few games that really feels impressive in a haunted school, walking around with a party of five members and see each one die due to my curiosity or falling for a trap like reading a letter about people who attended the school, it's really amazing.
There is evidence of Morishige's death. You can backtrack and find his phone. It recorded his freak out at discovering Mayu's death. He bashed his head onto one of the sealed windows so much and so hard he actually managed to break through it (something others couldnt do with chairs) killing himself in the process. "Glad the incest is kept in the wrong end" ...oof
... and then you get to the first extra chapter after you finish _Blood Drive_ and his whole story becomes a lot more confusing-but no less depressing.
Um, one, he didn't die as the extra chapter in blood drives shows him surviving and going back in the school. He later dies from Kizami. And two, the inc*st wasn't a wrong end, it was an extra end and there is still inc*st because that confession is just that, a confession scene...Yuka still likes her brother regardless if she confessed.
@morganc.m1830 Extra chapters take place in the past Morishige and Kozami met before everything completely went downhill. They even parted ways as "kindred spirits". Satoshi finds the phone that recorded Morishige committing suicide later. The Yuka thing was a joke. I know she's into Satoshi and after Heavenly Host she stops hiding it as much (taking baths with him and not minding showing herself (and her friend) naked to him). I've played every Corpse Party game in existence so I know everything that happens is canon, be it a wrong end or extra chapter.
The soundtrack really made the experience. Each theme was very fitting for the mood. The voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard actually. Not what I expected for such a small kinda niche game.
The VA's for Blood Covered were basically indie professionals that Team Grisgris could afford, while the VA's for Repeated Fear and 2021 were the best VA's available to MAGES.
i really enjoyed this. it put all of my thoughts about the original game into words! i hope more people get to see these games through the lens of your perspective, i'm sure it would get anyone interested!! hope you continue growing 🙏
woah, superb work on this!! there really aren’t enough long-form corpse party videos on this platform, and those that do exist generally stop short of tackling any of the actual thematic elements of the game… which is pretty unfortunate since i feel like there’s a decent amount of interesting stuff going on under the surface to talk about. the remark about loss being a prominent theme does a really good job of articulating something i’ve also vaguely felt for a while. in addition to morishige’s death mirroring the principal’s, i think morishige and naomi’s arcs in blood covered are intended to be parallels to each other (to some extent), especially when you look at how they both end. both commit some sort of terrible act towards the people closest to them - morishige desecrates mayu’s body unaware that it was hers, and naomi kills seiko - and they’re both harshly confronted with the truth of their actions in scenes that bookend chapter 5. morishige is utterly incapable of coping with this loss plus the weight of the guilt of his own actions, and it’s mayu’s phone call that ultimately pushes him to completely succumb to despair and take his own life. later on it’s shown that a similar fate almost befalls naomi as well, but conversely, the text message naomi receives on her phone happens to be the thing that inspires her to resist the darkness and continue living in spite of everything. when it comes to narrative cohesion the later games never quite reach a level of writing comparable to Blood Covered’s IMO, but I think they all still have their merits and it would be cool if you ever got around to covering any of them. wishing the future of this channel all the best 🙏
The "Book of Shadows" ending of the original Corpse Party will have Yoshiki, regardless if he dies, due to the game not accounting for it. The fan remake "Corpse Party Rubuilt" fixes this.
This video is fantastic. Corpse Party has been my favorite game for 10 years now and you nailed everything I love about it! I appreciated your take on Ayumi -- she is heavily flawed but that's what makes her a good character. She gets a lot of shit from fans but I've always loved the way she's written, and I'm glad you covered that.
It's sort of funny for me owning the 3DS back to school edition myself. It was my first time playing corpse party and I ended up getting it ten dollars cheaper than the game alone!
came across the 4ep anime about it thinking it is a random unknown okd horror anime just to find out that it had multiple games and its more popular than i thought 💀
Just discovered your channel! Absolutely great analysis. Corpse Party is such a good game, but as someone that didn't really enjoy the sequels it's hard to articulate what made this game different than the rest. You're breakdown really did a good job explaining all the elements and why they worked. 😊
I'm nearing the end of a journey to 100% complete all the... important Corpse Party games. I might visit the original/rebuilt version someday haha, as well as Dead Patient if it ever escapes development hell. The writing of this game is just so gruesome, I love it. Hell, without playing it (I started with the 2021 remake which was gifted by a special someone) I don't think I would have the same appreciation, patience, nor mental preparedness for the visual novels I've been playing recently, within and outside the Corpse Party series. The consistency in writing may falter throughout the future games, but the detail it goes into never does in my opinion. I don't know, I just love Corpse Party so fucking much lol. I've first discovered it nearly a decade ago but only experienced the games myself beginning a few months ago, and I'm so glad I did. I'm sure present me appreciated it far more than younger me beyond "Woah, Naho looks so cool!"
I'm sad I didn't watch this video first, but nevertheless, it was amazing. This game was amazingly scary. And I admit, I was terrified of the ghost in the infirmary. It gave me nightmares. I had to stop playing for a week. For a good minute, even after finishing the game, when looking down dark corridors or hallways, I could swear I could see that spirit. And till this day, the scariest part of the game, (I don't get any nightmares from it) is where Yuka is running from Morishige. She mentions she needs to hide, and you can OPTIONALLY and STUPIDLY into the restroom to hide. Big mistake. Someone comes into the restroom after her and surprise! it's not Morishige. It's one of the child spirits that killed Mayu. The door is then barricaded, and she's trapped in this small space where touching the ghost means instant death. It was so well done. There is one question I have that this game doesn't explain, Is how hell Sachiko gets to the real world to kill the children? Aside from that, this game was amazing despite me not really liking horror media aside from like Higurashi.
I deliberately tried to avoid making a joke about the Corpses Partying specifically because the only other Corpse Party Video Essay that exists makes that joke a few times and I didn't want to rip it off
I'm a big Corpsee Party fan and i first played it on PSP myself, I also have the mangas and Tortured Souls anime, I played pretty much through every one of their games and i enjoy the story alot, as the games progress it gets more bzarrw with throwing new characters out of the blue into it
great video! i love this game, and im not even into horror in general, not movies nor games, but i remember playing this when i was a teen, and yeah,it creeped the living hell outta me,but in a way i liked, not only i liked the game, but it sorta got me interested in the niche japenese indie budget gaming scene,a gaming scene i still like to this day, glad i got the Back To School Edition when it first came out,i think is one the only way to own a physical version of Corpse Party in the west
Written April 3, 2024 I wouldn’t say the mobile port of Corpse Party is bad, in fact according to Wikipedia it’s the 2nd most coherently complete uncensored version of Corpse party being that the mobile port is based directly on Repeated Fear. The obviously most coherently complex uncensored version of corpse party in the U.S. is the 2021 remaster of RF but RF on mobile is good for the sole reason that is the same RF storyline as any other console/PC
I remember watching the Anime and I was so hooked. I loved the anime but the ending was too sad- When i found out there was an actual game I wanted to play it immediately (i didn’t)

Its crazy how the og Corpse Party didn't even win the contest it was originally a part of, but it persisted and grew bigger than ever
