I remember as a teenager playing pool in these old time pool halls during the 80s. You felt a lot of history and character in them through the years.

I would have starved back then. I would walk into a pool room every night with $0 in my pocket and make a bet just to eat! I never lost! Damn I was desperate!

Funny you should phrase it like that, because I was a teenager in the early to mid 80's also and also spent some time playing pool in old time pool halls, and there was really a last act of a bygone era feel to them (only realizing it many years later). It was like experiencing the tail end of the 1945 to 1985 "street" era before the new technology of the mid 1980's, MTV's, VCR's, Walkman's, and early computers were about to obliterate it into the past, never to be seen again. I feel fortunate to have enjoyed a small slice of that, as there were some real characters back then (I'm sure you knew the same types) that you just won't see the likes of again.

I think this music was performed by Gil Evans and Robbie Robertson, (The latter who wrote and performed the main theme for the movie) as Gil Evans played Harmonica in the song, 'Modern Blues that is played in the movie right after this clip ends.

Flummoxed Paul as well. His wife Joanne Woodward won her Academy Award in 1957. Paul worked hard, and whatever else is said, his performance in The Sting surpassed Redford, to the delight of all. But despite 10 Oscar nominations, Best Supporting Actor wasn't one of them. Paul felt stung. Redford also didn't win. The two of them were Yankee actors, not part of Hollywood. I think they made their peace being outsiders. Redford was finally to win for Best Director. Paul's icy blue twinkle says, I'm here, I've mastered my craft, I'm enjoying delivering the best, nothing else matters.

The name of this song is "Where Flamingo's Fly" written by Bert Kaempfert (adapted with a beautiful whistling melody). So much of his fantastic music was ripped-off by American composers back in the fifties and sixties because being German, he had no legal recourse to stop the thieving copy-cats.

There was alot of the music from the movie that was unreleased onto the movie soundtrack, the music was performed mostly by Robbie Robertson and Gil Evans.
This is 1 of many pieces of music from the movie I'd like to get a copy of, but haven't been able to find without watching the movie itself.

Apparently, Scorsese wasn't too familiar with bookmaking when he made this film (or it just wasn't important enough to the film to care). At 2:35 when Felson asks "What's the book?", Amos says "50 on Fast Eddie gets you 100, 50 on Mozell gets you 25". Of course, that means the book isn't making any "juice" at all, so what would be the point? He should have had Amos say 100 on Mozell gets you 50, and 50 on Fast Eddie gets you 80 (-200/+160), at least then there's just a smidge under 5% vig and the "book" inquiry is more realistic, but as I said, it's not important to the film so only degenerate gamblers would catch it.
