If I had to guess, Chaos had escaped from Knuckles and found itself in the midst of the area where Big lived and his presence got Froggy's attention and the two got too close, which caused Froggy to be possessed by his tail while the main body escaped and eventually ran into Eggman. And Froggy was like 'must collect Chaos Emerald', stole Big's and that started their story.

I thought the game gear had 6 of those huge batteries that last for only 45 minutes of game play. The fat batteries. I remember because I had one and I could only ever play for a half hour before I needed freakin 6 fat batteries.
