Rob created the best way for NPC not dying or traumatised by them, by creating a really dumb but adorable NPC.
He does have a high Charisma. 🙂

They still started to traumatise him with the "It's not your fault" situation.
Part of me wants to point to Greg and tell Bodger: That's how its done! The problem is, I know he will take it as a challenge and ruin this poor guys mind and we will end up with another ghost coming after the party.
Greg be like: "I've only met Gareth for a few days, but if anything happens to him, I'll kill everyone and then myself."

@Volt64bolt they carry the same mechanics, but definitely not the same flavor. Taking vengeance upon someone who slaughtered thousands in the name of conquest is a righteous act and certainly not in the interest of a dark lord. Where as, in the beginning, had Bodger killed Sir Lord Conreau as he originally wanted to that certainly would feed Kelothac's dark domain.
@@StevenAvery-zq3xlBut in this case, Bodger still did it out of selfish reasons. He didn't want to stop the orc invasion or prevent Pierag from further killing others. He just did it because he killed his grandfather

Gareth has the highest charisma of anyone in their whole world/game. He convinced 4 god-like murder hobos that they WANT to turn themselves in. Great work Gareth!

Of course, knowing the Dickheads, they'd likely outright refuse or even somehow make Gareth bow regardless. Or by that point they've grown so attached to him that they'd willingly bow.

I like how Bodger tells Gareth about how he got his hammer that is rightfully his back, when Gareth was actually there willing to fight on Aaron's side in case Bodger didn't chose a 1v1

I love how Gareth went from being an insufferable nobleman jerk to a human golden retriever.
Just realized why Gareth was the only survivor in his squadron - his actions give a really convincing impression that he is not a threat. Even the orcs feel the same way.

I'm dying at Greg being so concerned for Gareth he doesn't even want him to get in trouble, and Bodger apologizing for not delivering the armor 😆they went from roving murderhobos to this, all because Gareth is just so damned innocent!

Ah yes, psychological violence based on paradoxical pseudo-choices, giving an illusion of choice and abstractive blackmailing, as one of the methods of manipulating and breaking the players' will. Definitely a red flag for the DM. If we add that he has mixed religion into it and is using its doctrine in a twisted way, we are really getting close to a sect/cult, if we are not already in.

Imagine: Gareth might be a master manipulator, that knew he wouldn't be able to capture them by himself so he plays dumb in order to gain their sympathy (very high charisma/maybe disguised deception) and in the end gets exactly what he aimed to do.
Yep, that would be hilarious. But if it's deception, Rob would have to roll each time. Wouldn't be fair to just make the players be fooled every time.

Technically Rob could use Gareth's passive score which could be like DC23+ but that should allow for anyone with a +3 or higher Insight to check (Greg). But probably not the case. Edit: But then again, the players can choose to "play along" anyways and not check as insight isn't really "lie or not lie" nor should it be used to determine whether the players believe or not in an NPC. Something could clearly be a lie but the PC chooses to go along with it anyways even with a high insight score.

I've never cared more for a character then I do for Gareth, such a talented Knight.
This realization just hit me. With the Campaign nearing its finale. Also our journey in following the guys will reach its pinnacle. I really hope they will continue with another dnd or other roleplay setting on thursday. This has really become some sort of tradition. Each Thursday i come home from work, i cook diner, eat with the family and then i have half an hour orso completely to myself, just to relax and see what the guys are up to. Awesome way to unwind after a hard days work. And i can't thank the guys (and ladies also) enough for this. So please stay forever 😆🤗😎🥳
I really want to see them do a full length Bored campaign after this one is done. I’m imagining Rowan as a barbarian, Alan as a monk, Adam as a wizard and Ben as a rogue

Gareth reminds of Doug Hegdahl who was a Vietnam war POW and was known as “The Incredibly Stupid One", and he was given nearly free run of the camp. Hegdahl memorized names, capture dates, method of capture, and personal information of about 256 other prisoners. Because of his act he was one of the first to be released. So Gareth may be The Incredibly Stupid One or the best spy ever.
I'd like to see how Gareth would think of Djeoph.

At this point you can't rule out that Sir Gareth isn't severely traumatised by the loss of all his men, and now has a kind of ignorant co-dependency with his "Prisoners."
Kind of like a reverse Stockholm Syndrome.
I wouldn't be surprised if Gareth also suffered from a phantom pregnancy.

I fear Gareth.
I assumed he was the commander who witnessed his battalion from a hill and retreated on his horse, but he refers to having a squad leader.
which means he must have been in the rank and file where he managed to be the sole survivor of a death ball of several dark force factions including the orcs, the main villains of the region.
Conclusion: I look forward to Gareth's first attack roll and spending of spell slots when the oathed man hits.
Imagine his first attack is a NAT20 and he does like a high level smite and instantly obliterates an enemy and the BATD is like "oh shit" lol
You know he survived only because everyone was willing to die to protect him. He probably didn't have to lift a hand in battle. And the last one alive probably died happy knowing that at least he lived. Forget the destruction of your army. THIS guy lived and that's all that matters.
Now I need Gareth to drop insane Paladin crit damage in full view of the entire party for a crouching moron hidden badass moment.
I am so glad that Greg is aggressively on Gareth's side. His face when Bob was like "Yea I take his horse" or "I just wanna bully him" was the look of 'fuck around and find out'. I know from the look in his eyes alone that Greg will absolutely kill anyone who tries to fuck with Gareth.
I love how Rob has hoodwinked the party into engaging with an escort quest by making the party "prisoners" of the escort NPC.
I don't want the Gareth Arc to end now, and I'm genuinely sad now when the episode ends 😂😂
Even Baradun used a consumable magic item to play with Gareth, that is a high praise
I meant to point that out, that "Wanna come with me Bodger?" - "Yep." has become like y'alls' version of a Colossus/Wolverine Fastball Special.
The story of Gareth becomes the next big hit play by One Man Shy called Good Gareth Hunting. The tale of a man from a rock quarry who rises to become a Knight of the Realm. Maybe they could get Matthew De'mon, Benjamin Of Fleck, Minerva De'river, and the great William Robins to star!
I hope that the guys won't be able to bring themselves to escape so they'll go through the sham court, get put in prison and then Gareth rescues them because he misses them so much.

These past few episodes have been bringing me even more joy than normal. I love how the gang is so nice to Sir Gareth - is he the Dickheads' redemption arc?? Sir Gareth, I'm rooting for you! 🥲

I bet Gareth survived the slaughter because his battalion sent him off with a list of supplies he was instructed to gather for the war. Among those needed items were: a left- handed hammer, a bucket of striped paint, and a board stretcher.
After fighting the four ghosts, and almost dying, they seem to have learned that NPC's are more then background objects.
Gareth is precious and should be protected from all the horrors of this world! Rob plays him very well too!
Gareth has confiscated all the weapons and he is forcing B&TD to carry them for him as he has no room.
Greg loves Gareth as much as he hates Djeoph.
In a way, Gareth really does got things handled. The "rope" they're all tied to is his dumb but adorable charm (his charisma is working) since they're now on his side and WANT him to be safe and successful at his mission

I love that they're joking about acting like prisoners when in reality Gareth's insanely high charisma actually caused them to be willing prisoners.

That would be a fun spell: Contrary Whisper. Once cast, it attaches to the person and whispers a contradiction to a specific utterance from the affected person.

Basically everything BatD have done is revenge! Killing peerag (pierag?) is revenge from bodger. The ghosts were all after revenge om BatD. Stopping Laethil is revenge. Making that 'everyone but Baraduan' squad was revenge for him keeping a secret. Bodger going on about his hammer is revenge for his brother 'stealing' his hammer. Etc
Reverse Paladin babysitter. Play on the group's compulsion for stupidity. Strong work Rob. Strong work.

This is what a DM has to go through. Make a character with depth and backstory, and the players couldn’t care less. Create a bumbling idiot, that was probably supposed to be a throwaway, and that character becomes the favorite
There is another way to re-balance good and evil. Instead of killing a dark lord, why not create a new god of light? A God of Garlic Farmers perhaps? Or a God of Rightful Ownership who protects those who rightfully own a thing but someone else has that thing....
Or a God of innocence... Gareth.
To offset a dark lord of revenge, you'd need a god of forgiveness, or something similar. 😇

Or the god of popping things from inside out. This should balance pretty much everything.
