As an Indian I am a great lover of Pakistani hockey. I first happened to see the 1982 Bombay world cup on DD India. The forward line of Kaleemullah Manzoor Jr Hasan Sardar, Hanif Khan and the mercurial Samiullah Khan on the Left wing was the best in the world those times when Pakistan virtually ruled over World hockey winning the Champions trophy at Karachi, 1978 Buenos Aires world cup followed by the victory on natural grass in Mumbai culminating in the Los Angeles 1984 victory. Greatest team ever I heard and seen.

Im English and So wanted Pakistan to beat the methodical Germans. I was 17 and a young player .Manzoor junior and Hasan sardar were so good to watch .I think the 82 world cup winning side is slightly better As they had atkhar rasool and samiullah .But the 84 were incredibly tough mentally . I'm still playing 37 years later .

I remember that Rashid ul Hassan was dropped from the team bcz he refused to play as centr half in 1983 and Pakistan lost all the three international hockey tournament ,finally great man Noor Khan then president Pakistan Hockey Federation recall him camp and confirmed to Rashid ul Hassan to play as his original position right half and he played whole tournament with his life best performance and Pakistan won the gold medal in Los Angeles Olympic 1984 Gold medal with the combination of Manzoor junior and kalim Ullah

This was the classical hockey with rules. Now there is no obstruction, off-side, back-stick, caret and one can score from outside the D and we still call it hockey :)
I'm Pakistani, but I totally believe these rules were changed to destroy the South Asian style of game. Unfortunately, India and Pakistan didn't fight to prevent these changes. Only Australia played a combination of Asian and European style. The FIH said the 5, 3, 2, 1 style is obsolete.

I was student of first year and I had seen this nail biting match. Australians were hot favorites. Every assessment showed that Australia would win but the results were different by the grace of Almight Allah. Our hockey authorities didn't pay attention to the victorious team on this olympics ... afterwards, Pakistan hockey team badly declined and now no where at international competitions...What a tragedy of life! After winning Olympic gold medals, Pakistani team players demanded some plots in Islamabad which they rightly deserved but again our stupid authorities denied their benefits. This has put to the zeal and zest for winning any hockey tournament in reverse gear...What a tragedy! NOW Pakistani hockey after 35 years has been sent to graveyard permanently... See how Australians were dominating and attacking Pakistani goal post continously in 2nd Half but they couldn't put the ball into the goal despite repeated attempts. As a nation, we are corrupt and never recognize the contributions of our heroes such as Jehangir Khan, Jan Sher Khan, Yousuf for snooker, Akhtar Rasool hockey, Shabaz Sr, Tanveer Dar, Asad Malik, etc

If any Pakistani player would have committed like this australian, he would have been punished to leave the pitch but astonishingly this partial referee did nothing for such blunder. Very bad and ugly decision. FIH should have banned this referree for ignoring the dangerous and knowingly foul on Manzoor Junior. I pay tribute to all Pakistani players for their tolerance.

I was lucky to travel from UK to watch the 1984 Olympics and Pakistan played much better in this semi final than the final itself .

If any Pakistani player would have committed like this australian, he would have been punished to leave the pitch but astonishingly this partial referee did nothing for such blunder. Very bad and ugly decision. FIH should have banned this referree for ignoring the dangerous and knowingly foul on Manzoor Junior. I pay tribute to all Pakistani players for their tolerance.
Pakistani players knew that they are going to win this all. So they remained cool and even didn't register a complaint.

I'm English and that Pakistan team 78 to 84 were a real inspiration to me when I was a young player .The 84 Olympics was the first time I saw them it was so exciting to see the skills. Shame sammiulah had retired .But manzoor for me was the man !
