As a Sicilian descendent in Canada, My ancients lack coins from this wonderful island. Now I MUST go on the hunt. Thanks Leo, always a pleasure to watch your channel.
Impressive coins..., unfortunately, getting more and more expensive by the minute, and far from my reach.... except for a few silver litrai and oboloi that I could gather just in time 😅
@@ClassicalNumismatics I agree very much, here in the US even the new bullion designs are not good at all… We’ll have to endure women quarters for FIVE years 😢 They should bring back an eagle or at least continue the national park series
Maybe I'm just drunk, but what a great video! Informative, engaging, and stirs the imagination. You probably know the story of Diogenes, Is there any known coins he or his father struck?
I have a small collection of mostly classical and archaic greek coinage. The sicilian coins and southern italian (greek) cities are my main focus but have pieces from all over teh greek world. Haven't got a leontini example yet but I will.
@@donklaser217 CNG has a good book series on greek coinage, archaic through the hellenistic. They have a great auction website where they run auctions every 2 weeks. Probably the best company to start with. Classical Numismatic Group. A good place to start.
It would be a Holy Grail dream come true of mine to own a Syracusan decadrachm with the ring of dolphins. I would need to be very wealthy/lucky indeed, hence why it might as well be the Holy Grail for me to even handle one.
Hi there. Love your channel, and discovered it as I’ve been researching a couple of ancient coins that have recently come into my possession. I’d love your opinion on where I should go to potentially sell them (auction vs. local coin shop, etc.), as all this is crazy new. Any advice (in hopes of not getting ripped off) would be very appreciated. The coins I’m researching are (from my research) a 500-400bc Athena dekadrachm with open winged owl on back, and a 300-200bc Kings of Macedonia with Poseidon on back. Thanks so much in advance.
Athens dekadrachms usually sell for several hundred thousand dollars. They are rarely available and highly prized. There is almost no chance a local coin shop would have a legitimate one.
There are only a handful of authentic Athenian dekadrachms that have come to light - ever. Not to say you don't have one but that is improbable as that coin along with the Eid Mar is the Holy Grail of Holy Grails among ancient coins. Get it authenticated so you know what you have.
Wonderful video and wonderful coins! Thank you! A little question about the tetradrachm of Syracuse. The swimming creatures on the reverse…I think that it looks like one(1) dolphin and…probably a tuna or some other fish? Not two dolphins.
I bought this coin around 2010. I don't have on video, but to me, it is as good or better than any examples I can find on the web. Have you seen this ? Even if just a bronze, go get one!
Some of the most beautiful coins of all time come from that island.
Those Sicilian issues really are the "top shelf" of Ancient Numismatics...way too rich for my humble budget.
Indeed, absolutely brilliant coins!
They got some really fine bronze too, and those generally dont go for too much

The new tech millionaire/billionaires are buying up a lot of the rarer coins.
@@larryfaulkner5705 I did not expect them to have such a good taste, but..., in that case, good for them!
Spectacular coins, and such lovely drawings, you are very talented :)
Awesome! Sono di Catania!
Very well presented and super interesting. Those coins were handmade works of art (as opposed to modern ones).
There are some very pretty coins made in the early 20th century, but ure right, coinage is not passing through its brightest moment currently

That is a gorgeous niche to focus on, I hope all the best on your pursuits :)
I am thinking about making that region the next focus of collecting! Can you recommend any books or other resources on this subject?

I'd like a B.C. coin 😁
Someday...
I have a Akragas Didrachm.
Nice! that must be a lovely coin
@@ClassicalNumismatics Indeed! Almost identical to the tetradrachm shown in the video, but more budget friendly.
Some serious beauties on this video! 🥰
Those are stunning! Were they yours? What advice do you have about collecting one of those?
Sadly these arent mine, they belong to another collector who was kind enough to film me these :)

I think you are right, it seems to be a dolphin and a tuna fish

Kinda hard to find footage of Dekadrachme laying around.
Dont worry, when I get a hold of one, you will definitely see it here
