      Yes, same for me, although I had not heard of him as his career was before my time, alas. It must have been an experience for him to have been an Englishman living in Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, a fairly isolated Gaeltacht area in the 1970s.

      @@allencollins6031 Yes, I imagine. Mayo is a very rural place even today, so I imagine it must have been a hell of a shock to see the bright lights of NYC for the first time.
      A lot of Irish women emigrants of that era worked as nurses or domestic help, tough ladies.
      I was in Ellis Island myself a few months ago, was tracking down a few long lost ancestors via their library. Fascinating place.

    It's amazing hearing an Englisman living in Ireland saying this in 1971. He understood the situation perfectly. Unfortunately he was proven to be correct but then that's often the way with intelligent people.

    Why are there no actors like Robert Shaw (or O’Toole, Oliver Reed, O’Brian) around now. Where are they. Very few interesting actors around….although I would love to be proved wrong.

    • @Fleur_de_lis2k
      @Fleur_de_lis2k ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe because the actors you mentioned had experience in theater as well and actors had more freedom to express themselves back in the 60's-70's. Nowadays movie industry is mostly controlled by Hollywood where it's all about action, simple dialogue, predictable writing, money and profit instead of demanding artistic performances where actors made their bones in front of live audience. Fine examples of acting worth mentioning like Shaw in Jaws and O'Toole in Caligula is something that is not easily forgotten.

    I always thought that his requirement, and not stop life from one place to another, family, so many films in a row, diferent characters (and much psichical requirement in most of them),
    and above all, that running in one of his ultimate films, which was filmed almost in one take, running and running fast, produced an injure in his heart or one on his ways, arteries,
    in his way to it, and suddenly, that injure stayed there, fatal, without any previous alarm, until it provoked the final diagnosis that day.
    It seems to be weir that nobody, ever, said anything about it.
