Does it also feel like winter came in a heartbeat this year for you this year? One minute we were enjoying an extended summer, then came the rain! Thank you for watching this week's vlog and for being part of the channel. We recently passed 11,000 subsribers and it's honestly blown our minds. We really appreciate you being part of this journey, it means a lot 🙂 (ps. if you don't already, please do tap subscribe - it helps our channel so much) See you next week! Jack and Gabby xx
Being in Australia it feels like winter won’t let go - we have a few days of beautiful warm weather then it’s back to cold winds and overcast days/rain. It’s almost like I need to light my fire again, but I’m really trying to avoid it as we don’t have any dry wood left!
Hi - Important! The stove needs a throat plate fitting inside to keep the fire in the box and stop the flame going up the flue. This will also make the oven much hotter and conserve wood. Good luck!!
Hi both! To get the best from range cooking you have to learn a different way of cooking. If you want the oven to heat up, keep your lids firmly closed, this will prevent heating the boat too much as well. All frying/boiling can be done in the oven, that's why range owners have cast iron pots... helps prevent smells too. For example, items can be put on a baking tray to fry straight in the oven Also the bottom of the oven cavity can be used like a hot plate so place your pans straight onto it for steaming/boiling. Can I recommend The Little Book of Aga tips which will be useful for your oven too. Also get a toast rack (Aga make them)... it makes the best toast you can place on the hob and shut the lid, just make sure you heat it up first or the bread will stick to it. Good luck guys x
Your stove looks beautiful. I saw it from its beginning and wow hefty (over 600 pounds) it is. That it looks this good is a great achievement you two. 🎉
Newbie here, I so looking forward to seeing your progress in your beautiful boat & journey with your baby🧸 I was born & raised in Dublin 💚🍀 But I’ve lived in the Philadelphia Area for 30+ years
Reminds me of when the back boiler went on the aga. Removed repaired the problem was it had to go in a different orientation. So the burning gear came in to the kitchen 2 new holes cut. Boiler refitted all for very little outlay. Well done for sorting it out.
Hi Jack and Gabby. Well done for getting the stove sorted. Hope that you are near to getting running hot water from the back boiler. Six weeks will fly. Enjoy the build up. I’m sure you’ll make fantastic parents. Take care. Nick
Reminds me of my childhood with a coal fire and an oven next to it my mother used to cook everything in the coal-fired oven. Those were the days being brought up in a Yorkshire mining village
Good job well done....plenty of wood on the sides of the canal you can pick up....keep your eyes peeled, and how areyou going to cook in the summer...????....Martin....
Thank you for your videos. I work far too many hours staring at a laptop and do look forward to your weekly update to remind me to get outside, slow down and take a breathe. The stove fire and film night looked lovely on a rainy autumn day 🍁🍂🥮 Surely there has to be a pumpkin pie planned for Halloween… 🤓
The stove looks soooo cosy 😍 the cooking abilities look amazing! Also, really enjoy seeing the realities of living on a boat under renovation, like the tap etc! Really interesting to see ☺️
This isn't a brag but it's honestly too hot at the minute haha! To get the oven up to cooking temp the boat gets a little too toasty. The hobs on top are very handy though! I'd not recommend living amongst reno, it's hard enough in a small space anyway let alone with various bits of wood and tools everywhere haha! Hope you guys are all good xx
Congratulations on getting the cooker going and I hope you enjoyed your first meal cooked on it. I was right with one of my guess's as I thought it would be either your cooker or engine that jack would be working on. My first meal would of been jacket potatoes with topping of choice. Best of luck with your next project on the boat guys and I hope your pregnancy is going well gabby
Aww bless so glad you have the stove sorted out. Well done for sorting the blockage..Must be getting exciting now little one is on the way very soon :)
Well done on tackling the wood fire Jack - looks like it worked well! Like you said, when you’re using it intermittently you’ll burn a lot more fuel getting it to temp from cold than you will keeping it at that temp. Love the artwork Gabby - very fitting for your baby!! A month is heaps of time to prepare - honestly other than a few clothes, some nappies and somewhere safe to sleep bubs will need very little at the start! So make sure you rest up during that time - not being worn out when you go into labour will be a big help!
I would go with a nice pot of "Texas Red " chili. All meat - NO BEANS - that has a wonderful gravy that is not too spicy, and have some corn bread made in a cast iron skillet. Top that off with a hot buttered rum and a good movie and you are golden! Really enjoy your channel, hopefully in a year or so I plan to come over and see about buying a narrow boat and starting a new adventure. All the Best
I am so glad you got the aga sorted Jack. Gabby I love the screen print & you are looking lovely. I would cook my Mums Bacon & Egg Pie & Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding for dessert with vanilla icecream. YUMMO!!!! Look forward to the next video. Take Care Guys.
Well done for the perserverance with the fire and Gabby, you have hidden qualities we never knew of, well done. Great vlog, looking forward to your next video, love you. XX 💓
Don’t forget that the stove combustion uses up a lot of the oxygen in your confined space. There should be a combustion and make-up air provision for your safety. I would recommend a 3” or 4” diam. vent. You could put this in the side wall low as possible (to avoid chimney smoke) near the stove with a sheet metal pipe down behind the stove (to avoid drafts) near the floor. This will mix with the hot air from the stove.
This is all considered as part of the boat safety scheme, which we passed. The boat has plenty of ventilation at both high and low levels. Thank you for your concern though 🙂
Hi Jack you never stop amazing me you approach things in a strange way but get there Gabey you are looking radiant and I don't think it was just the heat from the stove❤
Happy to see you’ve got your fire going. Having the oven in it working well is going to be great over the winter. Top tip when installing a burner; remember to tell your followers if you’re experienced at having fires otherwise your comment section will be full of people expecting you to not know what you’re doing and offering unsolicited advice under the assumption that you’re going to burn your home down! 🤣
We've been enjoying 15C days here in Saskatchewan for the last several weeks, and today it's instant fall with no temps above 0 for the rest of the week. I guess it's officially sock and sweater season!
I really enjoyed the video as I always do.Gabby your Artwork was lovely. And jack the meal you cooked at the end looks delicious.Have a lovely week all three of you.❤️🩵🦴
First I would cook is a full roast meal, invite all my friends with wine, classic music. And lots more wine with a good movie and cakes. That’s my idea when I finally get my boat. I have already let them know “when ever you to get away from it all, my boat in always open”. Which is why I would be having a doors with smart locks, that way I can send them a key by phone. Just so they can let themselves in if I am out, at work, or shopping.
I bought a wide beam barge this year and it came with an Esse Irionheart, the best stove/come fire I've seen, supper hot but need to watch when cooking.
Glad you managed to fix the oven problem. Jack instead of buying you a coffee can a buy you a big elastic headband, so you don’t have to keep scooping your hair out of your face?? I was thinking of the ones the footballers use!? 😊
That looks like a very cozy 🔥 Love it😊 In the USA, depending on where you live, some people cook chili on the wood stove, we always had navy beans or bean soup on the wood stove with pan fried cornbread. I think Gabby’s artwork looks great, lots of different shapes and I like the colors she chose.. Keep up with the great videos and hopefully you will get more subscribers as the weather gets colder and more people tune-in to TH-cam…looking forward to more baby news😊
We would have had stew and dumplings fave winter food well done getting the stove going take now be ready for your little one luv from your oldies 🤗🤗🌹🌺🌷
Mmmmm 🤔 I think I would make a Tomato Soup (Marry Berry’s is lush) with flat bread to dip 😋 yum yum for my tum ❤️❤️❤️ Enjoying your work guys on your plush boat 👍🏻 X X X
Mm delicious, sometimes you can't beat a tomato soup when it's cold and miserable outside! Soup will definitely be on the cards in the next week or too 😊 thank you ✨
Hi Gabby&Jack please get yourselves one of those orangy folding cart that youtubers"Ula and Josh narrowboat" have, it will make your life so much easier to carry heavy thing's to boat and especially with a baby on a way. Much love
Hi guys. Stove looks amazing. Use a mixture of wood and charcoal the coal will give you a more even temperature for cooking and will save you burning through a ton of wood.
Glad to see your fire chooses to belch smoke in to your cabin as well when door is open. Mine does the same (I wonder if everyone's does...) Last night, I saw a boat that probably didn't have a throat plate in its stove. It was moored under a tree and flaming bits of not sure were soaring in to the tree above and on to the roof of the boat. Terrifying. Maybe get something fitted so you don't set anything on your roof on fire? Or melt your ropes without you realising. Sorry if you've already thought of this!! 🙏
Firstly, I would do a big pot of neck of lamb stew to last days. Secondly, did you know you can get baskets to fit inside so you use less fuel? Also, hope you read the comment about the throat plate and storing the wood under the fire being a bit dodgy. All the best for the forthcoming birth 😀💜
Have you tried a coal cage inside the big grate area. If you dont use the oven part too much it might be more economical. Is yours a multifuel? The basket sits inside and you fill with coals and they slowly burn down. No need to fill the base.
First thing I cooked on my little tiny house fire was eggy bread (french toast) I still do most mornings for breakfast. But you cant go wrong with a stew that cooks slowly through the afternoon - though watch the steam - small places and condensation
Essentially, you ate living a hygge life? Does the wood burner have an oven section? If so, I would cook a lovely apple crumble in the oven, and a chilli con carne on the top of the wood burner.
About your darkness on a boat, I seen it some youtubers did a 2 big halls in a roof and put glass in it and they have plenty of light now. Although in a right place as a privacy issue😅
hi we have an iron heart at home. did you get instructions? There is a button to slide top middle this transfers the heat to the oven, but it does take time to heat up.

Cup of hot tea first. Then a good, hearty beef stew!

Reminds me of my childhood with a coal fire and an oven next to it my mother used to cook everything in the coal-fired oven. Those were the days being brought up in a Yorkshire mining village
I've spent the last couple of weeks watching from the beginning, loving watching your progress, hope the stove works better now.

Aww bless so glad you have the stove sorted out. Well done for sorting the blockage..Must be getting exciting now little one is on the way very soon :)
It's getting scarily close! We are excited although probably a little naive as to what to expect haha
