hardstyle offically started around late 1999, and has evolved a lot since then. In it's infancy, it was larely unheard of and was easily mistaken for European hard trance. By the mid 2000's, it became far more melodic with tik-tok kicks and extended pitched basslines. It eventually became commerically well known and then began to take samples from well known pop songs which the early hardstyle heads frowned upon. It's all hardstyle though at the end of the day, just different styles of it.
