Years ago when my dad first showed me your videos I thought you were a little goofy. Once I started listening I realized how much knowledge this man has. Please keep it up and stay safe buckin. People look up to you
@@jonmccormick6805 yes, very briefly at Paul Bunyan last year. Wonderful human being!!! By "goofy" I'm saying he's got some silly, humorous ways about him. So do I 😅 !!
He would definitely blend in with my household. My wife was yeah yeah whatever until she watched then it was like “Babe, he’s my kinda people”. A great personality means everything.
Sounds like your dad had the right idea! First, a little goofy; next, you’re hooked on the wisdom-classic bait-and-switch in the best way possible. 😂 Seriously though, Buckin’s got that rare combo of knowledge and personality that keeps us all coming back. Stay safe out there, and here’s to more laughs and lessons from the man himself!
Having tried this on a few trees. Not this size of a tree, but smaller. I certainly appreciate the amount of energy you expended to get this size of a tree down! And your accuracy with your swing is definitely from years of experience! Kudos to you and for sharing!
Absolute don as per usual! Comfortable swinging technique with pucker tools prepped. It’s tempting to act tough get knackered and mess up. Nice to hear the subtleties of the trees movement without the saw there’s a lot to learn from here. Big love❤
YESSS!!! Axe stuff!!!, Beauty!! That is a ,AXE!! Bucker do wood like a robot!! 👌👍 And got power like a he-man arms!! Good, good job my man! Billy-Ray-buckinmaster! 👌👍☺️✌️✴️🇫🇮🍀☀️
I've had mine for 10 years. Every swing probably adds a minute onto your life! Nothing makes you feel more alive than watching this thing just eat wood.
After a busy week it is always nice way to start the weekend by watching your videos. Just got mine Gränfors bruk axes sharpened and will go and fell a tree or two. Haven't done it in years! A goooooood change and mental health for me - just the sound of an axe hitting wood. Fully charges your mental battery and keeps you in shape too! Hi from Finland!
Anyone chopping like this please beware, the axe can glance upwards just like happens in this video (10:30) and can cause serious injury or death. I highly reccomend reading the axe book by dudley cook or watching the old FS video 'the axman' for safe and efficient chopping
It’s fine to chop on an angle like that if you prefer. Just switch hands on the backside (left handed) and match the angle so the hinge is intact-otherwise, you’ll cut the hinge off on one side. If you couldn’t do this back in the day, they wouldn’t hire you. You seem comfortable swinging clubhanded. It’s not common in timber sports these days, but a few of the best still use it on the underhand chop.
Well it made it to the ground. His disclaimer even said it wasn’t gonna be pretty so that should tell you he’s not perfect. What I see is that this man who’s not 100% took this tree down for us. He did it for me and though I’m not an axe guy I learned something today.
@@saltrock9642 what I learned was that maybe it was his planning and experience on his plan for chopping it but there was no struggle, moments of doubts, the axe drove deep and dropped the tree without any difficulty
Excellent video. I bet after chopin down that Fir , you treasure each & every one of your chainsaws in your collection. Not many men left with the gumpshion to chop down a tree like that. Well Done Bill !!! Thanks for the watch
How cool is that ? Nothing like the satisfaction of an axe felled tree. Dont care if it’s a christmas tree, some pesky willow / alder. No lie, that cedar was an impressive piece of work. For all the reasons you mentioned ! ! (AK woodsman )
Beautiful axe head. Does need one of your custom c30 handles. My Gramp was a double bitted axe user. Use to tell us, it was so when one side got hot, you could flip it over to use other side, and let it cool off. And he said it with a straight face too.
One thing about using an axe is that you can hear the wood whenever it's talking to you. Sometimes, you don't have that opportunity whenever you're on the chainsaw. 😊
Buckin, did any old timers talk about fellers in the 1850's to late 1800's using bent handle axes to make undercuts? Killinger's video posted on Jan 29, 2021 found a crooked ax handle in a framer's 1850 toolchest. You see it around 17:48 into the video.
Going straight in just binds your axe into the kerf. You need to come at an angle to relieve your material. That's the way you do it. Just like you're doing it.
Thanks for another great and informative video Buckin'. When making your undercut with an axe your natural swing is at a downward angle going away from you, we saw that clearly in the video. When making the back cut you must be fighting against your natural swing to match up with the undercut. That must be so awkward.
Did exactly this 30 years ago, but planted spruce along with pines. Disease killed off most of the spruce, and the pines grew like weeds, and are probably 60-70 feet now. I planted them too close together and too close to buildings. I’ve taken many down over the years. Think ahead when you plant. 30 years goes by fast!
@Buckin' Billy Ray Smith you learned how to cut the same way i did i just went out and figured it out yeah alot was the wrong way but alot worked for me You sound like you gotta cold hope you feel better
That would have given me a pile of blisters and no hide on my palms.. I used to be decent with a chopping axe once upon a time but that was a long time ago.
Freaking sweet axe, and I have one myself but… I hardly ever use it. I’m still waiting on someone to buy it though I hardly use it. I will miss watching it go. But there camp axe is the everyday axe, it’s over 3lb so it’s a work axe though. The camp axe is just a smaller version of that one Billy’s got. The Tui that is. It’s hard not to keep talking about axes so I’ll stop myself now haha. Much love and respect.
Got the same axe plus two camp axes, one with the standard shorter handle and one with a normal size handle. Both made and hung by Tuatahi. My best axes. Cutting on an angle is not a problem because you backcut wil cancel it out because the angle is dropping the other way. Chopping a straight line gives you a pretty stump but its not easy to do. I rather saw the straight line and chop the downward angle. Same on the backcut then.
If you sit behind a computer all day, don't try this great chopping day one!!! Or it will make a Man out of you, like it did Billy Ray!!! Ha! You still got it, fella.
Well done Buckin years ago did they use something to lube the bit and cheeks so they didn't stick so much (bees wax ) or something , on the other hand pulling it out gives one a little break in the rhythm
Do you ever swing from the opposite side i.e. you always seem to swing righty,, if you swung lefty on the back cut you wouldn't have to cut 'uphill'. But as you say, no right way, no wrong way. Just an observation.

Hello Buckin, it’s a pleasure to see you back in the bunker creating and sharing your passion Thank You
Good on ya, Buckin'! You're in great shape and swing those axes like a youngster. Breathing heavy and heart pumpin'. Love it.
