You’re a perfect example of the old saying about a CX. Drive one for 10 minutes and you won’t want to drive it ever again, drive one for 2 hours and you won’t want to drive anything else again. I know the DS seems to get all the love and money where enthusiasts are concerned but, seriously, the CX is truly a superior machine in so many ways. It was definitely let down by its quality of construction, can you imagine what sort of price they would command if they’d been made by Mercedes Benz in the 70s/80s, there’s no way I’d have been able to afford one. Keep working on improving it Seppo, I’ve owned one for almost 7 years and still, when I park it up and walk away, I can’t resist turning round to look at it, that’s surely the very definition of a mobile work of art.

you're going to travel in a time machine if you drive any 5 door C5 (1st saloon or break, 2nd break/estate), the amount of betterness and connection with all the past generations of Citroën is amazing, and it can be much more underrated, v6 or diesel or inline 4 petrol or whatever... so much room a nd confort...and new safety or even low fuel consumption for smaller diesels...

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@InternetListenerhaving (had, sold the C5 V6, kept the CX) both, it's far too normal in so many ways.
It's a good car. But a Laguna would be as good.
Nothing matches a CX (in good and bad ways)

@ 1.9 diesel 120cv Laguna, just the same car, hard to tell apart. There are hundred of good, reliable, useful... Reanult Cars, Vans and Trucks. But Laguna as you say so, is the one to go.
Last Hydractiva suspension (giving ride quality of RR, MB and McLaren), as you say, jus the same as 1.5 tonne spring+shocks + torsion bar.
In fact any Lancia, Maserati or Alfa Romeo is as boring and normal and similar to the spirit of classic Citroën... no need to have a CX to know. Let's not talk about how amazing are Stellantis cars which all have the old Citroën evolution tech and feeling on them. But Laguna, I guess a free one, or geting paying by someone wanting to get ride of one is as good. Can't remeber, do they all leak green fluid on your shoes?

Lovely to see a CX GTi back on the road. I used to have a Mk1 CX Gti, green with chocolate interior, along with electric sun roof, and drum instruments. Fuel consumption was about 20 miles per gallon. The engine is based on a 1936 design that predates even the DS. However cared for the engine will last for ever. They can do 300K miles . The only problem I had was that the engine would cut out on the overrun when you went to change down into third, but only sometimes. Then the car would not restart for a day or two then it would run fine until next time. My garage gave up on trying to find the fault, so I worked on it myself. Finally traced it to a tiny split on the underside of the air inlet flexible pipes. The split would only leak if the engine moved on it mountings as when changing down hard. The loss of back pressure due to the leak meant the air flap metering valve would misread and the fuel injection would get the mixture wrong making the engine cut out. Easy to fix, but it took ages to work through the injection system to find it.
It looks like recharged spheres including accumulator will restore the magic carpet ride at any speed. Above 100 mph the venturi underbody starts to work and you can feel the car glue itself to the road with downforce. The excellent drag coefficient means the fuel consumption drops very little even if you drive the car rapidly. Change the oil often, otherwise the big ends are at risk.

I loved watching your CX series. 2 years ago I purchased a 88 CX GTI Turbo 2. I need to remove the engine in mine to replace the leaking head gasket and gaskets at the base of the cylinder liners. I removed the a connecting rod bearing and a crank main bearing and all the Babbitt is gone but the crank journals are still nice looking. Previous owner replaced all the spheres and the pump and rear brake lines. He also rebuilt the brake calipers. CX Basis is where I bought all the replacement parts including a full exhaust system and reproduction 16” turbo wheels. Thank you for providing me with a resource when I get started with my repairs. I live in the USA and there can’t be but a handful of the CX model in North America especially the turbo 2 model.

Such a cool car, such a cool resurrection.
You make me envious, my CX GTi is tucked up until the roads are not salty here in Scotland. I am so looking forward to waking her up and going for that first drive though.
So much stuff to cover in this video, you didn't have the chance to mention it but the braking demonstration also shows the clever front suspension geometry well, with anti-dive, so the car doesn't stand on its nose under heavy breaking, it just hunches down at both ends which helps prevent wheel locking too.
And the zero caster geometry that Citroen could use with the DIRAVI as it has powered return to centre: That allows the car to suffer a blow out at speed and drive straight on, not veering across the road, same with ruts or verges, the car is not pulled into them as the geometry keeps the external forces from acting on the steering system. Amazingly safe by design.
Oh, and the load compensation on the rear brakes that uses rear suspension pressure to determine brake force distribution.
The CX really took all the best bits of the design ideas from DS, GS, SM and rolled them into a superb car, engine limitations accepted.

Nice! Watch those salty roads, though🙂. Years back, I remember friends with an 8 year old Ford Cortina mk 3 who stayed up in Northumberland (N E England) for a week and drove back and forth several times to Lindisfarne island, which you get to by a tidal causeway road that is only usable for part of the day, covered by seawater at high tide. Impatient people (like them) sometimes drive through the seawater when it is shallow enough. A few months later the car badly failed its MOT due to structural rust and had to be scrapped...

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yea... but I think there is less saltwater on that road then the rest of the roads in DK at the moment... the amount of salt used on the roads to prevent icing is horrific! Sometimes the road is white from salt!

From 11:11 It's totally normal that the car drops down before rising up when setting higher ride hight. It's because of the motor that turns to the set ride hight position and it's a circular motion. Thus the rods to the hight regulators gets pushed and pulled and in this sequence and at a point the rods pull the rods to a lowering position before the ride hight motor stops at the selected hight which is in your example "high".
Think of it as a windscreen wiper motor. :)
It's positioned in the under carriage under the passenger seat side and fastened on the sub frame.
From 15:45 It's possible to change rear wheels without a jack by just setting the ride hight to highest.
But if you would ever try this on the front it's just isn't possible due to the high front weight.
But as you mentioned, you can use any object under certain areas to support the chassis and then just lower the car and the wheels in the front will rise up.
Don't forget the engaging the hand break.
I think the middle point is somewhere under the front seats.
At one time I had my CX on jack stands in the front and just leaned on the front... the car was just about to tip as the rear wheels lifted in the air. ;)
From 30:40 You should be able to stay as low as 0,8 liters/ metric miles. I had that on my older CX Break. And that's a larger car. :)
Check your lambda voltage from the free connector next to the battery. :) The correct expected voltage is printed on the hood. Adjustment is made on the LMM. It's normally a covered hole with black round plastic lid and underneath is a hex screw. :)
That road between the islands must be tricky during winter time!? Icing comes to mind and whops, down the water you go. hehe
Great work and cheers from Sweden!
PS. CX was my first car when I got a driver license in -89. It was a -75 CX 2000 with no DIRAVI.

Seppo do you think Citroen could make a “ No feed back “ for my wife 😁 she is far too opinionated 😂 , if it works on steering sure it will work on her 😉. Joking aside love this project and your doing a grand job of keeping this luxury has been car on the road 👌🏻.

All the CXs that were imported by CXA in the US were recalled due to the signals not self canceling. CXA got around this by taking some of the foam out of the rear of the steering wheel, adding a metal plate and a sensor on the column that would trigger it to cancel.

    try 2 mode driving.
you are either accelerating at 80% power, or maintaining a speed/driving with load.
They can be mighty inefficient with gentle acceleration.

@@SeasideGarage it probably never fully worked... but wiring issues on an old car can't be blamed to the country at all, today you won't find any "indestructible" new old car, even if you find a 0 miles example in a Museum, it will need a full service, gaskets, tune-up to be minimally reliable and not self-destruct in some miles of driving...

    Hi Seppo
    Congratulations on the car.
Your car is a swiss car with a CAT, right?
In general, these cars have a reputation for excessive Fuel consumption.
The CX is not great on mpg in town driving, but on a run they’re not bad.
My Old CX TD1 (95hp) did 15km/l in normal driving and 16-17km/l on a run.
My 2400ie Automatique (3sp) does 9-10 in normal driving and a maybe 11-12 on a run.
Not too bad considered it has a low-geared slush box.
This will not help you - but just an explanation of the consumption of your swiss car.
    Enjoy it!
    Mvh
    Søren

10L/100km from a 2.4L is really not that bad in my opinion. My bmw 2002 (100hp, 4speed and a lot lighter) got the same.
My dads Ford Taunus 1.6L wagon (75hp, 4speed) also got the same.
Also, this car will do better on a long Autobahn roadtrip because it is at speeds over 100km/h that the low drag coefficient really pays off.
I used to drive taxi in a CX prestige TD. That car was impressive on longer roadtrips (200+km going to Amsterdam airport and back)

You would once you understood how to handle it, prob love my daily driver a Reliant Robin MK2 van. I have mildly tuned it, fixed a lot of the sloppy bits on the suspension and it goes like a rocket and can just about thrash out at just under 100mph but it gets there bloody quick. Suspension is so tight and predictable I can motor round the local very windy roads like its on rails and its so cheap to run at 70+mpg, super cheap road tax and insurance and a few more years and MoT and road tax exempt too. Thing with a Reliant Robin is you drive it like an old British sports car, you go into a corner like a lamb, drop a gear and roar out like a lion and it is so rewarding and extremely positive driving like how a Mini should feel but with three wheels making for very sharp steering. If you ever see one, give it a drive you will be surprised.
