First week on the CBS Match Game for everyone's favourite redhead Fannie Flagg. Flagg had previously appeared on the NBC Match Game throughout the 1960s and appeared about as regularly on that as she did on the CBS one! At the time, Flagg had until recently been a cast member of The New Dick Van Dyke Show. She has also appeared on Pyramid, Tattletales (although Flagg is a lesbian, she appeared alongside Dick Sargent who was gay), Hollywood Squares and To Tell the Truth. Flagg was well known on Match Game for her bad spelling (she is dyslexic) and later for wearing T-shirts that would show off her, shall we say, prize assets. No wonder Brett was always so hostile to her, she was probably jealous. She also had a pretty good record for matching with contestants. Flagg clocked up a massive 90 weeks on the CBS Match Game, a further 16 weeks in the syndicated series and a further 4 weeks on the NBC's Match Game! Hollywood Squares! Hour! in 1984. From there she overcame her dyslexia and became a successful author. Her most famous book is the 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (which she later adapted into a successful film). Now on to the other non-regulars! Bert Convy is now in his sixth week on the show, his last full week of 1973. Third week for jokesters Jack Carter and Ann Elder.
Bert Convey was the first one to use the "How fat was she?" remark on Match Game! It became a standard in later seasons. Of course, the originator of that question was the immortal Ed McMahon from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.
First instance of "How _____ was she??" after the question began with "blah blah was sooo ________....??? I've watched it up to this episode and I think it was.... Might have started here.
1:09 I saw that episode three days before I began watching this collection of Match Game. I saw him on Snoop and called out his name in questioning astonishment - rePEAtedly!!
I wonder what they would have done with the first question if Charles Nelson Reilly had been there. I can imagine someone mentioning his hair would have drawn a lot of laughs.
Though he did give some gal a peck in a previous episode, this is the first instance of Gene "welcoming properly" a new gal, kissing Flagg albeit on her nape not her lips. Brett's baiting of others gets tiresome. 'Meat' should've only garnered one match not the two with 'steak.'
I don't understand why they allowed Brett to be so nasty to Betty, Mary Anne, or Jo Ann...She acts this way all the years the show was on, I don't find her funny at all. Now she does have her charming moments, not many! Brett Somers is MEAN!!!
Love the lower tier. Brett did not do much but belittle all the pretty women panellist. Ann would win two Emmys and Fannie would write books. the stupid fat comments all the time toward the other women Richard would correct Fannie on her spelling and would later keep it up not nice..
You know some of this stuff just isn't even funny. "When he saw the menu, he whispered to Mary, 'don't order any blank.'" What a dumb question. I was impressed that Brett and Fannie said order no food.
In the audience match the question was Trench blank. The first two celebrities gave their answers. Richard was called on for the 3rd spot. He went on stalling for quite awhile then Richard finally said Trench hand. Immediately it sounded stupid and everyone cracked up! It went on for several shows making fun of his Trench hand answer.
Free spirit butterfly flying! ;0) ROFL! Another fine episode! :0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! ;O) ROFL! Love ya Bert! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Fannie! ;0) The sign came down too far it looks like in the background.. ;0) I notice that they don’t seem to help each other much yet in the head to head..3rd time the camera man got the giggles at a question this season.. ;0) sand? Air? Drowned? No?! ;0) Go Bart! ;0) Love the voices and acting Gene.. ;0) Ohh that smile and laugh.. ;0)
This is my guilty pleasure these days. Total escapism and laughs.
Love the 70's fashion show. Wow! Get dressed in the dark and whatever you pick will be acceptable.
Bert Convy was consistently a very good player.
True. But a horrible dresser.

I watched this before, but don't remember Bert Convey being on here so much
Fannie Flagg 💜💜

Brett needs a job tearing up tickets.😂

Might have started here.
Gene accidentally skips Richard at 13:44. Funny response.

Bert's *"How [----] is it, Gene?"* is so great.
Has anyone else noticed how much Jack Carter sounds like Jack Klugman?
They also look alike. It really throws me off!

Yes they do. I thought they were brothers/related somehow.
I noticed that Burt is prompting some of the questions. When does the audience get in on it?
First episode with the head-to-head Super Match big money sign with black background.
Richard shaved the mustache. Looks much better.
The clothes of the 70's, gotta love them? Including the red shorts I had as a child (ick).
First thing I thought of as I was 16 in’73. Those sport coats, knots in the ties as who even wears a tie anymore.Ugh!!!!
11:14
For waterbeds made in the 70s, it was actually possible to get algae.
Panelists:
1. Bert Convy
2. Brett Somers
3. Jack Carter
4. Fannie Flagg
5. Richard Dawson
6. Ann Elder
"Trench Hand" - the Match Game joke of 1977 - was an obsolete term for manual (aka "hand") frostbite.
1975 actually

noticed that too about gene's welcome, very slick how he plays it off as something he always done, but never has.

Always loved the way Brett and Charles Nelson Riley teamed up.
Look forward to reading and making fun of all the whiny and complaining comments about Gene kissing the women throughout the rest of 73 and 74.

Richard's suit coat wants to make me puke!
Exactly!!!! I was 16 in ‘73 and it’s one part of the 70’s I ‘d love to forget .
Good thing he had an air-sickness bag in one of his pockets
COW: What’s nuuuuuuuuu??!!!
Not sure if the jaws of life had been invented back then, but that's what my answer would be for the revolving door question
Love the lower tier.

the stupid fat comments all the time toward the other women

Suitcase?! ☹

Saul Goodman was a gameshow contestant..? Far out !!
What is trench hand? Never heard that before

SWIMMING, swimming
Blank hand is obviously _trench._
What? Never heard of it.
gerryu21220 check out Match Game episode 509 and you’ll get the reference.
I thought "second hand" would be a good answer.
rooting for contestant helen, wanted to see some more hot pants.
yeah buddy
Nancy, not Helen.
I love Jo Ann but Ann Elder is a big haired BABE
contest richard's got dry mouth
Does the contestant look like a serial killer? Asking for a friend
yes he does and his wife is beautiful, go figure, his head also looks like a light bulb
Yup
He must have had a good paying job.
Leave him alone!

Ann Elder is from Cleveland Ohio.
It is Ann elden dummy
It's Elder. And there's a great interview with her here, done for a Cleveland Tv program. th-cam.com/video/JSijGSNHEI0/w-d-xo.html
Good on you for taking the high road when some dick calls you a dummy and turns out to be wrong. Cleveland rocks!
I didn’t think kissing Fannies were allowed on network TV 🤨
GENE GENE the #METOO MACHINE strikes....AGAIN 🤦🏻♀️
different times..
Metoo machine?
The amount of stupid comments and retarded people watching these old shows is off the charts.
