I love those old boats, they really heave and roll even when there's hardly any big swell. Best place to be is up front where you can really feel the swell! But then you probably wouldn't get much chance to enjoy it as you'd most likely be working so hard.
I think you'd be surprised what those trawler 'sprits' could survive, don't forget they were designed to work fishing the North Sea. Watch Irving Johnson's Peking video if you want to see what the North Sea can be like! Anyway, they could be run in very easily if needed and you'll regret shortening yours in light wind plus the sheer weight of it in steel. Ah,m i see your problem, Elley's is fixed, wrong move, if only for reducing your length for lower harbour dues......
Have a look at Elley Grey a GRP St .Malo pilot cutter delivered 2012 , built for a couple to sail the world with speed comfort and safety stunning and for sale .

What an amazing camera.
What a pity a reefed main wasn't set before leaving, that's a perfect Provi breeze.
That bow sprite would never last an ocean crossing , on Elley Grey we shortened it from 20ft of wood to 10 ft of steel .

Put up sail, stabilize the boat.
