Pole barn lumber shed DIY. Part 1.

  • I've never worked with round logs before, so this is a great 'warm up' project into that world. Round wood has it has it's challenges, and I have my weaknesses, but I'm gaining inspiration through this process when considering future projects built this way. I am feeling like I could use a few more tools and a lot more knowledge for this kind of work, so my joinery techniques are very basic. I would have liked to join the braces more seamlessly to the posts, however, my attempts at that were a failure (not shown in the video). It's something to work on!
    As I've said before, my projects are never perfect and my techniques are very rudimentary. But I think it's important to know that we don't all have to be an 'expert' and execute 'perfection' in order to still have something good and functional :)
    Not entirely sure if this will be a 2 or 3 part series. Have to see how it goes!

    The best part about building anything is you get to use the lessons you learn from each project moving forward. Once you're done with this shed you can make a shed for the sawmill and one for the mini ex and skid steer, look at that you have a list of future projects to be more "perfectly imperfect" on. Hope the surgery went well for Steve.

    (I hope you don't mind a suggestion... MIGHT help on another PROE-ject) To notch the pole after sawing both ends of the notch, instead of doing ten half-cuts then knocking them out and chiseling, do a plunge cut near the center and saw out toward each end. Should be easier.

    I've heard that post Covid lumber prices are so high that it's actually cheaper to source "barn wood", reclaimed lumber, that used to be prohibitively expensive compared to new.

    Posts should have been installed on a concrete pad to spread the load out. You also cut way to much meat out of the support beam to rest on the post. It will probably split at some point at the bottom of the knotch.

    Really enjoying your channel your a woman driven to produce no matter. One thought you need to make your self a pair of timber frame sawhorses and make one with a removable shave horse for de barking small stuff and peg holes in both spaced 4” for big logs you can set a big log on them use pegs to hold while rolling and shaving bark off at waist height.

    Don't sweat that 45° support, with the materials that you are using it'll stand right where it is for 80 years and then it'll be someone else's problem by then haha, nice job!! Did you try to tap it on the side with your backhoe? If ya do, just tack a temporary piece of wood on the outside to protect the outer edge of your upright support log 😉

      @michygoss7148  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, you’re right. But I know that round logs are 30% stronger than their milled counterpart, so I figured that it would still be ok and it kept the math aspect simple in my head (which is what I was most concerned about).

    • @michygoss7148
      @michygoss7148  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s because I didn’t! It doesn’t need to be checked in this situation, with round logs. My goal was the beam to be level, and as long as it visually looked ok and close to 90 degrees, that’s all that’s important. My 45 degree cuts on the wind braces indicated to me that they were very close to ‘square’ with the exception of the last one. Which, unfortunately, visually does not quite look 90 degrees, but the beam is level, so that’s what’s important. IMO. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Hi everyone! Thought I would give an update on Steve as many people are sending well wishes. Thank you for that! He is ok. We have settled on going to the USA for surgery, and hopefully in the next couple of months it will happen.
    Why USA? It’s often difficult to access health care (with a spine specialist) in Canada, many people have long waits until they can have surgery. We don’t want to be in that long line up, so heading south is what we feel is the best choice.

      As I've worked for a grading and hauling company since 2004 and I've cleared a large number of lots for new homes. I've seen many days and weeks of running the saw all day long non stop. Saw chaps are very bulky hot and will get you caught up in thick ground cover getting me tripped up causing me to fall downward several times before. Gloves are a no-no too of you want to keep your fingers intact on your hand I suggest you not wear gloves. The saw blade could catch them and tangle your had on the saw. Two things I suggest everyone do is wear safety glasses and hearing protection.

    Watching you drive in the those long screws on the corner braces using a Ryobi Drill Driver prompted me to suggest you try using an impact driver instead when driving those long, tough screws. Once you use an impact driver you'll never look back because they are amazing work horses when it come to driving tough fasteners. I have successfully used a standard size Hitachi impact driver to drive 3/8" galvanized lag screws into 1-1/2" pressure treated lumber with ease. Of course I pre-drilled the lumber to the root diameter of the screw threads since those amazing tools can't do the impossible. You are one hard working lady who lets nothing stand in her way, and are an inspiration to all young women who wonder if they are capable of tackling those kinds of jobs. I applaud you Michelle and hope that Steve's back surgery was a success.
