I beat the game and beat it two more times with new games. I didn't fill out the skill trees till end of the second playthrough. I'm a pretty impatient gamer I beat it 3 times in a row. It needed a couple expansions because the run time is way too short. I've come to terms the ending. Johny is a monster 8⁸⁸⁸⁷that ⁰⁹iy7h8iì9⁹⁹
I remember playing this when I was 13 years old and it was wild I never played something like it and I collected all the artifacts and got all the upgrades and then play the New Game Plus and I got to say this game makes you feel so powerful I'm glad they Embrace more of the comic books this game shows you what the darkness is really capable of in the series
I love how the darkness isn’t an ally. It’s genuinely hates Jackie and the two are just stuck together due to other circumstances and Jackie feeds them and the darkness makes him a walking tank. I also did dig the multiplayer even as meh as it is
Another easter egg in that "The Ravioli is Too Spicy" poster is the location of the event; "Franchetti Theater". Jackie was originally a hitman for the Franchetti crime family, and the adopted son of Don Franchetti
No please no more remakes. Sick to death of remakes up the ass everywhere because it’s “safe” and companies have no creativity anymore. Just make a Darkness 3 and wrap up the story.
@Jonathan-Shadow I think remakes have their value, it's nice to play old games on modern systems and have upgraded graphics and gameplay. It allows people to replay games they loved in a new light and also introduces new people to the game
I was so unbelievably hyped for this game, I tuned into ever Dev Livestream and even won some merch. And I adored my time with it, but, realistically, it was WAY too short. One particular point I still love this how it depicted the Hell Asylum as a, mostly, realistic Mental Hospital. It was disarming, but unnerving, in the exact way it intended.
I don't usually like and subscribe when a content creator tells me, but you showing the gore and getting yourself demonitized showed me you're a man of the people.
I thought he was doing those cutscenes inside the closet full of rakes in the asylum, since in one of them you can see the shadow of the asylum counterpart of Jackie
Does anyone else prefer Mike Patton's performance as The Darkness in the first game over the second? The Darkness in the first game sounded like a genuinely terrifying, ethereal horror wheras in 2 it sounds more like one of the imps it summons.
@MrHammers I also think the way Patton spoke in the first game helped with his performance. Him fluctuating from a raspy whisper to guttural growling really sold the creepy factor as opposed to the constant high-pitched screaming like he's Invader Zim in the sequel.
Patton's voice acting in the original was incredible, so much subtlety & menace to the way he delivered certain lines. It genuinely did not sound human. Still liked him in the sequel but it wasn't quite the same.
Idk why but in the beginning of this when the darkness says “FEED ME THEIR HEARTS!” Always gave me chills especially how the tone of voice changes when it says hearts 😮💨
I like how the change of gameplay does not feel jarring storywise, usually when games are taken over by different studios and have their focus changed, it feels out of place and bad, but here it feels like in some ways it is the evolution of Jackie's psych changing from the first game to this.
I remember buying this game specially because of its art style, it called my attention and I had a lot of fun with it. I probably wasn't annoyed by the length of it because I bought the game on a nice sale for like 15 or 20 bucks in my local game store. Nice days when I could find sealed brand new games for such a neat price lol
I have not played this game since it came out, but to this day I remember that final cutscene if you take the bad ending, where it plays that "I only have eyes for youuuuu" song... I really liked both of these games.
Man you always knock it so far out of the park it’s insane. I can’t wait to see this channel hit it big!! Keep up the good work, and Happy Halloween ♥️🎃
This will always be a 10/10 game in my book! An example of a short game that has high replayability, a cooperative mode that you can do solo, NG+, and even chapter select! I prefer that over the kinds of games we've been getting lately. Either padded by bloated gameplay or narrative walking-simulator sections. And, most of the time, they don't even have NG+, chapter select, or both. I've replayed The Darkness II so many times now that I think it's more than 10 times already.
It's a small thing, but I love the thumbstick direction tutorial in the restaurant, deliberately telling you to look the wrong way in preparation for you looking both ways. It's a small detail, but I adore that kind of immersive tutorial. Followed by an On-Rails shooting section before giving you the full Quad-Wielding controls is very smart.
I got this on black friday one year, remember not thinking much of it but was blown away at how cool it was. Couldn't believe I hadn't heard of it before then.
I'm missing 2 achievements from this game and they will haunt me until I die its been over a decade since i played but 12/13 year old me lived for and loved this game going to school darkness 2 on my mind all day would love to see the series revived and hopefully continued or one final send off
If you wish to get somewhat of a conclusion to this story, read the "Broken Trinity" saga, it's a crossover between The Darkness, Angelus and WitchBlade, and it should give you an idea of what the third game could've been about
I didn't know there was a second ending, I chose to stay with Jenny (I played both games and they were among my favorite games). I wish the investigating elements from the first game would have been in the second ;but both were good.
Goddamn your videos are a treat. The games combat and short-but-sweet nature reminds me a bit of Bulletstorm. Picked it up on sale a few years back, definitely gonna go back to it now. Happy Halloween!
This and Bulletstorm are 2 of my favorite games. I’m a sucker for Linear FPS campaigns that have amazing gameplay and lots of fore, and both of those games fit that bill.
I got the game free on steam back then, after i finished the campaign shit was sad af, and even in the credits there was a scene Jackie and his gf was on the couch and just watching the TV. The theme song made it even more sad
Something that people maybe don't know about the Darkness: It is passed on from father to sun so Jackie is lets say a bit frustrated since he is a hound but must not risk it (this world seems to not have any form of contraception and Jackie seems to not know about the pullout method)... A good part of the humor in comics is seeing him frustrated over not being able to get layed and trying to find a solution. He even got propositioned by one of the Order dudes since there is no risk this way... Anyways, he made a construct out of Darkness matter... Basically a living sex doll. It was a whole thing... XD
Man I don't think I'd even heard of this series until seeing various retrospectives on the first game. The sequel looks even better, I wanna play this!
I played both when they came out and absolutely loved both. Since I have always loved cell-shaded presentation of games, I was easily excited bout this iteration since the og was based on a comic book anyway. Also the game-play rocks and IMO much more intuitive than the og. I just wish it was longer.
In my opinion this was a good game I never played the first one, this was my first time introduced to the series and I liked it alot ,the game was fun and being able to tear people apart was so awesome,it deserved a part 3,but sadly we never got to see it
I feel like its not a coincidence that has soon as i started replaying both The Darkness 1 & 2 that it started to be talked about again. Who knows maybe since some people are bringing the game back up it might get a remaster or a sequel
Been loving your content for a week or 2, just noticed I had yet to give a well earned sub. Top notch videos, reminds me of minimme. Keep up the great videos Hammers
I played through the entire thing today for the first time and MAN i've been sleeping on this game for so long, i just love how the game tells you the story of the darkness for those who have never read the comics, which was extremely useful for me since i've never read any of the comics, to me the game still looks amazing even in 2024, the heartbreak in this game stuck to me personally, Jackie himself has watched so many loved ones and people die, it's a real shame that this banger of a game didn't get a sequel but it's probably for the best since most video game sequels tend to have mixed reviews nowadays. Also, i really love the darkling in this game we must protect him at all costs monkey.
New viewer here. When you said the thing about how you'd take the demonstration to show how good the animation was and asked for a sub and like you 100% got it my dude. I'm exited to watch more of your content.
this was the first pc game i ever played. kind of a perfect starter game. has that familiar arcade feel. not insanely difficult or long. allowed me to get a better sense of 3D combat, movement, multi tasking, etc. A+
I think it's been to long to make a darkness 3, what they should do is make a witchblade game picking up where this one left off where a major plot point is rescuing Jackie, disconnecting it from the darkness while also directly continuing the story allowing new players and old satisfaction
Thank you SO much for this video! I adore this game. It’s so underrated. I like it more than the first one personally! I still want a The Darkness 3 dang it :(
Told ya it was better than the first ;) Glad you covered these two gems. Damn shame there is no Darkness 3. That cliffhanger left a void in my chest back in the day.
The problem with integrating The Lord of the Rings into our universe is that we'll always be asking, "Why?" about the smallest details of the manner in which it was done. Are "all roads supposed to lead [back] to This Game: The Darkness"? The developers went into the mind of An Inventor, and made Inventing Things be "an Invention" after it had already been invented by the first inventor --including all inventions of all forensic techniques--. This is like how extremism "keeps inventing" the death penalty (by giving it a reason to exist) after it was already invented long before, except "backwards/upside down". Most scientific game ever: the premise is that the player exists. The contribution is made as long as the player does [really] exist.
On both Xbox 360 and Steam, I collected all the shit in one run. I never finished Vendetta on Xbox, but I do complete it in Steam. It was quiet fun. Maybe a remake akin to this style combat, but with Starbreeze hub would be a cool idea. I'd love that. Good memories.
One of my favorite mainstream games (Black Mesa ftw!) from 2012. Also glad to see someone share the same love for the graphics and gameplay despite it's shorter length. It also reminds me you just never see the Mafia melding in with a supernatural/demonic story in cinema. How someone hasn't made a Godfather meets The Evil Dead is beyond me! Sad you didn't touch up on the co-op, though! As it can be played single-player with 4 new characters that offers an in-between campaign set during Jackies rampage against The Brotherhood where his gang hire mercenaries to help take down the families enemies and take the heat off Jackies Back. Funnily enough, each character offers new narrative and conversations for each individual level you play!
Can't forget the Trailer of this game being shown on an Advertisement while I was finding collectibles by watching Videos about Prototype 2. Thank God I saw that ad. Made me hook onto something while I was high on Edginess back when I was a kid Lmao Speaking of Prototype. Why not take a look on the Prototype and Infamous series. This and those 2 are my top 3 Power fantasy game back in the day. Let's not forget the song "I only have eyes for you" on this game that even a edgy kid like me that is constantly being a trouble with the bois back in the day felt calm for a long time.
I'm gonna sound really weird for saying this, but outside of the jank of the first game, I prefer the gameplay in it because of the sandbox nature of it.
@@MrHammersalso you say there are no health bars in Darkness 1, that's false, the Eyes are the health bars, which is why you die fast in the light. Also Red tentacles can grab enemies too, like in 2, you just have to hold the bumper.
I bought Darkness 2 years ago from some Steam deep sale. It's been hanging on the category and recently got Steam Deck and thought it might be good performance test for it. I believe I'm now really close to the end, past the graveyard scene. But hot damn this game is GOOD. I mean it has awesome combat mechanics, graphics haven't dated cause of the art style virtually at all and plot / missions are just insanely good. It's now one of my favorite fps games ever made. What a pleasant surprise this was.
Although the game had it's shortcomings I had a blast playing it. From the intro, the vicious and bloody reviling of the darkness to the gunplay, action and graphics everything was awesome. Even spending time in the penthouse was fun and I enjoyed walking around and talking to characters. Wished there was more gore, blood, finishers and other stuff. Oh and that Noooo at the end from Jackie was great, the voice actor really sold it. Great review man 👍
The only bad part of The Darkness 2 was it ended on a cliffhanger.
Yea replayed it today ended up sad it never let us know what happened
Even the coop gamemode where you play as one of Jackys hit squad members was great. I loved playing as the Katana dude.
Still waiting for the third game to this day
I beat the game and beat it two more times with new games.
1000% shouldn't have ended it that way if they never intended to bring it back for a third one

This game makes you feel like the true vessel of the darkness for sure. Such a fun game
I love how the darkness isn’t an ally. It’s genuinely hates Jackie and the two are just stuck together due to other circumstances and Jackie feeds them and the darkness makes him a walking tank. I also did dig the multiplayer even as meh as it is

Id love a The Darkness remake merging the gameplay of the second with the open world and atmosphere of the first
The perfect game

I still occasionally think about that shot with Jenny, no pun intended.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster as a kid, you are bringing back such nostalgia covering these hidden gems of our childhoods.
I don't usually like and subscribe when a content creator tells me, but you showing the gore and getting yourself demonitized showed me you're a man of the people.
You're a rebel, huh?
He just casually says , " Dead in the middle of little italy," thats fucken clever. I subscribed my friend that was dope.
The cool thing is, the cutscenes where Jackie sits in the chair and talks, he does so from the hell he was left in at the end.

The Darkness in the first game sounded like a genuinely terrifying, ethereal horror wheras in 2 it sounds more like one of the imps it summons.

Oh and that Noooo at the end from Jackie was great, the voice actor really sold it. Great review man 👍
The ending was fucking fabulous! It sent me in an existential crisis 😂
