Thank you, Joan - just trying to keep a record of what happens in the wake of the loss of our beautiful bridge. I really appreciate your comment and support
Glad to see they were able to figure out the removal/reinstallation process! I remember being told mid-summer that the plan was to have it removable, but to see it in action is impressive. Also shows the power of buoyancy!
Yes, a capable crew engaged here - with considerable experience in similar work. I highly recommend visiting Western Mechanical's TH-cam channel. Buoyancy - when correctly calculated, is a very powerful force to have at your disposal
No, thank you, Kathy for that thoughtful comment. I had the benefit of taking breaks when I chose. I hope that some of the crew notice your concern - they will appreciate it.
Thanks for that - yes, a long day, but not half as much as for those involved - and I could take the odd break. It's comparatively easy to stay focused on an interesting topic like this one. Oh, and they finished earlier than scheduled too - that didn't hurt
Thank you - Western have used this technique before, but it clearly demands skill and engineering expertise. A delight to follow a professional team. Music is the hardest thing for me, but Howard Harper-Barnes, the composer, always comes through
Oh I do hope not, Gary - we need a full replacement that involves less effort, expense and manpower. But, I know what you mean and think you're probably quite right
I've seen the radium Yellowknife and it's barge Wich it's paired with the radium 604 on the seaway this I believe was the first time the radium Yellowknife and it's barge the radium 604 were in Kingston in a while the last time I remember them being here in Kingston was during construction of the Wolfe island wind farm they acted as a secondary tug and barge along with nadro mariner's tugs ecosse and vigilant 3 and the Wolfe island marine tug foster now known as pepper
Jake - the tug has seen quite a bit of work at this end of the lake this year. Twice now in association with the Causeway and to tow the Capt Matthew Flinders down the lake for work. She'll likely be back in November
That was an ingenious way to move the bridge. One more time? I think not as spring is not far away and a new bridge might take some time to complete given this channel and road need to stay in operation for the most part. It will be interested indeed to see the replacement bridge installation when the time comes. Cheers 🇨🇦
Thanks for that comment, James. There will be another opening in November - and the scheme for next year is uncertain. I expect it will be several years before a new bridge is in operation.
@6:48 ... beautiful Autumn Colours on the far shore! That is one scene I have missed since leaving Ontario for congregations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Folk in the Prairies think that Saskatchewan has wonderful Fall colours, but 3 shades of yellow just does not do it for me!
Thanks for watching - and particularly for noticing the colours on the far shore beginning to show full Fall glory. We're probably a couple of weeks off peak splendour, but Ontario does have exceptional displays
Well, that was a "smooth" operation. Thank goodness the weather cooperated, so let's see how the next one goes. I hope that they have bribed Mother Nature to ensure good weather.
@@jamesk393 James - only one boat entered immediately - four more entered the marina within hours. Three of them required the services of the dry dock for mandatory inspections as commercial carriers. It’s the only facility in Eastern Ontario that can accommodate larger vessels.
How does the Uncle Sam (fake) paddlewheel boat pass under Waaban crossing (and the 401 for that matter) ? Is there a secret undocumented boat tunnel with locks at either end to let them pass under those roads? 🙂
Great question - the Belle was travelling to the dry dock at the Kingston Marina. The Rideau Canal has a height limit of 6.7m / 22' and only one passenger carrying vessel, specially modified with a raising bow and telescoping wheelhouse routinely offers cruises along its length, the Kawartha Voyageur. You can see here here th-cam.com/video/MkhGLJvIO0U/w-d-xo.html
@@Aerosnapper Thanks ! It wasn't until this project that I was made aware that the Rideau Canal was not navigable by ships so was quite surprised to see this video where the bridge was "raised" for a ship! Is there a point of building a bridge that can be raised instead of a fixed span that is same height as Waaban? Is it just because of the dry dock?
@@jfmezei You're very welcome. Yes, the principal reason for considering a bridge that is not height-limiting is to permit access to Kingston Marina and its associated drydock. Both a lifting bridge (with one or two leaves) or a swing bridge would work. A group is already considering options for the eventual replacement.
You may laugh - but many of us who hold marine licences and certification use them to consult weather forecasts and other data - nothing unusual in this day and age in a mariner using a cellphone - good to know you're concentrating on the content though - thanks for keeping us on our toes
Thank you so very much for covering this bridge-lift event, superbly as always!
Thank you Marilyn for following along and taking a moment to comment. It's greatly appreciated
Thank you for this great film - we would never have been able to see it without your work.

This is absolutely amazing, thanks for the video, what a treat to see this process and Radium Yellowknife she’s looking fantastic!
Glad you found the update helpful and interesting. Yes, that's one very capable tug... great crew aboard
Great job capturing this and sharing it, Mike!
Thanks Don - couldn't let this one slip through
Great coverage Mike, must have been a long day for you! Thanks!!!👍👍👍

That was great. I have never seen this procedure before. Excellent coordination. And I loved your choice of music.

Great coverage👍👍!
Thank you - the work done here deserves to be documented and recognised
Excellent! You're a PRO!
I love your confidence in me and your comment, but I'm pretty sure that pretentious amateur is closer to the mark. I do try though - thanks so much.
Mike
Amazing video presentation
Thanks for all your updates
Stu
My pleasure, Stu - happy to help. The whole story is fascinating to me and it needs to be documented. That being the case, I’m happy to share.
I was wondering how they were going to open the passage - ingenious engineering.
Yes, indeed - a visit to Western Mechanical's TH-cam channel shows a lot of amazing engineering
This will eventually become routine. Nice update Mike! Thanks!

Video quality and narrative superb as per usual, but the music, always excellent, in this case was 'uplifting'...
Stephen - thank you - Howard Harper-Barnes is a great composer and I'm fortunate to have a wide selection of his works to choose from

It went very well indeed. Yes, the weather is very important. November may be challenging, but this experience will likely prove very valuable.
So they removed the bridge for 1 boat to cross ?
@@jamesk393 James - only one boat entered immediately - four more entered the marina within hours. Three of them required the services of the dry dock for mandatory inspections as commercial carriers. It’s the only facility in Eastern Ontario that can accommodate larger vessels.
It should be evident that Eastern Ontario needs a dry dock that is accessible when needed.
Well that was pretty simple. Pump the water out and up she comes.
LOL - yes, anyone could do it - with a little practice and experience - perhaps.....thanks for watching
