He owned 80s teen films. Especially the ones with Molly Ringwald, who is so underrated and was such a natural 80s girl. Like Ally Sheedy. Breakfast Club is classic that everyone should see once, along with Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink. Molly could be vulnerable without being an annoying, codependent dumbass in distress. She was no Bella from Twilight. She was a hopeless romantic, but she wasn’t stupid. “I don’t believe this - they f***ing forgot my birthday.” One of the lines that defined the 80s for teen films. I still laugh hard at that. Her delivery is spot on.

Agreed. Personally, belief keeps me going and makes sense to me. I have what makes me believe and you have what makes you not believe. We are not enemies, just confused people, some more opinionated than the others, trying to find answers. I wish that more people saw it like that instead of treating the opposite side like fiends.

@Janice Kronen agnostic is separate from atheism as gnostic refers to knowledge of whereas theism is about belief. Christians claim to know God exists but also have faith/belief as a central part of doctrine. Atheism is essentially the position of "I don't know" if there is a God. It does not necessarily say there is no God. Agnostic is about knowledge of a deity. Atheism says I don't believe in a certain God such as the Christian or Muslim one.

I started checking out George Carlin when I was right around your age. He caused me to question things that I believed or had previously accepted without any examination. His stage persona was a magnification of who he was as a person, and how he broke his routines up into 'big world' bits (religion, save the planet etc..) and 'small world' bits (a place for my stuff, farting in public) was nothing short of brilliant. There are a lot of people who would consider him a cynic, but as he once said, "Scratch any cynic and you'll find a disappointed idealist." I hope you continue to enjoy George's material for a long time to come. You'll be surprised how as time goes on, the material stays the same, but becomes more profound and meaningful to you. At least that was my experience, anyway. And I'd encourage you to look for interviews with him where he's not on stage. The man was brilliant and articulate. I'll leave with one of my absolute favorite quotes from "Mr. Conductor" himself, "I love individuals. Every person you look at, you can see the universe in their eyes if you're really looking." Right? I never understood how people take all the stuff in the Bible and such so seriously. And if we're supposed to believe in imaginary beings, can't we pick a better one to look up to than this God who seems rather cruddy and hypocritical most of the time (we're told about forgiveness but God supposedly flooded the whole world to wipe out almost every living being, coming real close to commiting genocide just cos he'd had enough of the behaviour of his own creations). This guy Brahma does not give a shit about humans. He is only concerned about his creation, namely, the world. Those people who are extremely ambitious, are mad about worldly acquisition and material conquest, such people will get the blessings of Lord Brahma. People who seek tranquillity, inner peace, inner ecstasy, will remain poor and helpless. That is why India has only 2 temples for this guy Brahma. As against 2 million temples that are dedicated to other Gods like Vishnu and Shiva, who work with people seeking inner peace and joy. I remember being in middle school and realizing that religion is something that tells you everything had to be created. Then in the next sentence tells you that God didn't have to be created. I recognized that religion is built on a contradiction which makes no sense. From that moment on I stopped believing in God.

It's is almost impossible to prove that something does NOT exists. Therefore, if someone claims existance of something it is up to them to prove it. Most people dont bother believing in most mythical beings, but believing in God is a traditional.
There are several thousand 'gods' actively worshipped across the globe. And most of the people who worship one or more of them find their own tale somehow plausible, but see all the others as ridiculous fairy tales. Sadly, most people grow up with belief systems passed to them by their parents, and never stop to question their parents' intellect. It's good to respect your elders of course... but blind, dogmatic adherence to their silly beliefs is what keeps many people mired in perpetual ignorance.
@Byrdmaniac - Actually you can't empirically state the NON-existence of something based merely upon your own experience. Funny you used 'swans' as your example. As philosopher David Hume said, "No amount of observations of white swans can allow the inference that all swans are white, but the observation of a single black swan is sufficient to refute that conclusion". So we can say, "As far as we know, there are no rainbow colored swans". That is a solid THEORY based on observations. But like all theories, you cannot claim it as "fact", no matter how many people have gone looking for rainbow swans and failed. That is actually how basic scientific methodology works. No reputable scientist ever claims something is an 'indisputable fact'... only that some theories are widely accepted.
Carlin was always about two things, entertaining his audience, and making his audience think. Over the 30 plus years of my loving his work, making his audience think seems to me to be his raison d'etre, especially after watching the arc of his career. While I wouldn't call Carlin a philosopher, he was definitely a master student of the human experience.

Sometimes George would play with his audience a little. In this piece, he's all about appealing to people's rational minds. Point by point how seemingly improbable a supernatural entity being in charge of things. By the end, most people accept that he is correct in his reasoning. But then he does something to pull the rug out from under their rational selves. At the end, in order to prove there isn't a God, he instructs God to strike the audience dead. What's funny about the audience reaction is, if you pay close attention there is an almost imperceptible pause before they break out in nervous laughter and then cheer because, well, nothing happened. It's like no matter how rational a person is, deeper down at least in this case, a deeper level of fear can take over when put under stress. George knows exactly what he's doing and he's having fun. It's really brilliant. He has led them to this point, knowing full well that his real fun is playing his own little joke on the audience. George is really far above most comedians. Brilliant.
I've had lots of discussions with religious people, and it seems that you can't ask them hard questions, or they run away! One said: something can't come from nothing, so God has created everything, then I ask: who created your god then and who created his creator etc?and why don't you worship those? Since they created your god? Discussion over! Same with: you can't prove there is no god...no I can't! Can you prove I have no invisible dragon in my garage? No? Well, prove there is no invisible dragon and I will use your method to prove your god doesn't exist! You can't prove a negative, but no sane man believes in leprechauns,elves, fairies etc, why? Say you believe in them and they will say you're mad, say you believe in an invisible Man, you're nuts, millions say they believe in an invisible Man it's religion?

I just chalk that up to the years and years of social conditioning we ALL got programmed with - everything from all those God-related expressions (i.e. God bless, oh my god, thank god, etc) to social pleasantries (i.e. How are you, have a nice day, etc)... Interestingly, I never really picked up too many of those. I never asked how anyone was, until the more casual versions of the inquiry came along (How's it going, what's up, etc). I've always hated being asked that question ; I always say "fine" or "alright", even when I'm not, but it's the quickest easiest answer to get past that crap and avoid any follow-up queries. Now I am too damn old to give a shit and I just sneer and scoff at the question in a "don't ask" kind of way. I just never saw the logic of all that pretense. Why ask someone how they are? Do you really care? Are you even mildly curious? Not likely, you're just "being polite". Politeness is just a prelude to suck-up and kiss-ass to someone, an overture for a favor (either now or later down the road). Not always, but most of the time, like 90/10, maybe 85/15.
There is also the Difference between a 'Religion' and an 'Organized Religion'. The difference in 'Religion' is based upon the Originating written Documentation, while an 'Organized Religion' is based upon a Pope/Priest/Preacher/Imam/Rabbi/Shaman or other 'Religious Leader' pushing their own 'Interpretation' of the Originating Documentation which then the next 'Religious Leader' puts their own twist on it.....till many many years later, the 'Organized Religion' doesn't teach what the Originating Documentation says. Here's an small example...the 10 Commandments, is one of them "Thou shalt not Kill"? Answer: No, the actual commandment is 'Thou shalt not Murder' which allows a person to kill another in Self-Defense if attacked, of which we all have a God Given right of Self-Defense. Yet how many Bibles have been printed with this 'Error' of Man in it? We also 'Kill' Animals for food, we don't 'Murder' them, and depending on your Religion you kill certain Animals for Food as the Bible, Torah, or Quar'an, or other Religious Documents specify and if you followed the 'Thou shalt not Kill' people would have to be Vegan or violate this Commandment every time we ate Meat.

Another great bit by George about a very touchy risky subject is his bit on Abortion and the sanctity of life it helped me change my views tbh on abortion I used to be very hardcore Catholic and ignorant and anti abortion but his logic in that bit really blew my mind I use to always wanna tell people how to live and what to do and think according to my stupid biblical beliefs that were forced upon my innocent little baby brain since birth but now I'm more happy more open minded and a critical thinker always question what your told and always use logic and reason

It's is almost impossible to prove that something does NOT exists. Therefore, if someone claims existance of something it is up to them to prove it. Most people dont bother believing in most mythical beings, but believing in God is a traditional.
There are several thousand 'gods' actively worshipped across the globe. And most of the people who worship one or more of them find their own tale somehow plausible, but see all the others as ridiculous fairy tales.
Sadly, most people grow up with belief systems passed to them by their parents, and never stop to question their parents' intellect. It's good to respect your elders of course... but blind, dogmatic adherence to their silly beliefs is what keeps many people mired in perpetual ignorance.
@Byrdmaniac - Actually you can't empirically state the NON-existence of something based merely upon your own experience. Funny you used 'swans' as your example.
As philosopher David Hume said, "No amount of observations of white swans can allow the inference that all swans are white, but the observation of a single black swan is sufficient to refute that conclusion".
So we can say, "As far as we know, there are no rainbow colored swans". That is a solid THEORY based on observations. But like all theories, you cannot claim it as "fact", no matter how many people have gone looking for rainbow swans and failed.
That is actually how basic scientific methodology works. No reputable scientist ever claims something is an 'indisputable fact'... only that some theories are widely accepted.
The penny in the fountain is a life-lesson. It showed me that you need to spend money in order to make it, and invest in what you believe in.

Carlin was always about two things, entertaining his audience, and making his audience think. Over the 30 plus years of my loving his work, making his audience think seems to me to be his raison d'etre, especially after watching the arc of his career. While I wouldn't call Carlin a philosopher, he was definitely a master student of the human experience.

It's okay to be agnostic, Georgia. In fact, it's smart to be agnostic.
Sometimes George would play with his audience a little.
In this piece, he's all about appealing to people's rational minds. Point by point how seemingly improbable a supernatural entity being in charge of things. By the end, most people accept that he is correct in his reasoning. But then he does something to pull the rug out from under their rational selves.
At the end, in order to prove there isn't a God, he instructs God to strike the audience dead. What's funny about the audience reaction is, if you pay close attention there is an almost imperceptible pause before they break out in nervous laughter and then cheer because, well, nothing happened. It's like no matter how rational a person is, deeper down at least in this case, a deeper level of fear can take over when put under stress.
George knows exactly what he's doing and he's having fun. It's really brilliant. He has led them to this point, knowing full well that his real fun is playing his own little joke on the audience. George is really far above most comedians. Brilliant.

I've had lots of discussions with religious people, and it seems that you can't ask them hard questions, or they run away! One said: something can't come from nothing, so God has created everything, then I ask: who created your god then and who created his creator etc?and why don't you worship those? Since they created your god? Discussion over! Same with: you can't prove there is no god...no I can't! Can you prove I have no invisible dragon in my garage? No? Well, prove there is no invisible dragon and I will use your method to prove your god doesn't exist! You can't prove a negative, but no sane man believes in leprechauns,elves, fairies etc, why? Say you believe in them and they will say you're mad, say you believe in an invisible Man, you're nuts, millions say they believe in an invisible Man it's religion?

I just chalk that up to the years and years of social conditioning we ALL got programmed with - everything from all those God-related expressions (i.e. God bless, oh my god, thank god, etc) to social pleasantries (i.e. How are you, have a nice day, etc)...
Interestingly, I never really picked up too many of those. I never asked how anyone was, until the more casual versions of the inquiry came along (How's it going, what's up, etc). I've always hated being asked that question ; I always say "fine" or "alright", even when I'm not, but it's the quickest easiest answer to get past that crap and avoid any follow-up queries. Now I am too damn old to give a shit and I just sneer and scoff at the question in a "don't ask" kind of way. I just never saw the logic of all that pretense. Why ask someone how they are? Do you really care? Are you even mildly curious? Not likely, you're just "being polite". Politeness is just a prelude to suck-up and kiss-ass to someone, an overture for a favor (either now or later down the road). Not always, but most of the time, like 90/10, maybe 85/15.

There is also the Difference between a 'Religion' and an 'Organized Religion'. The difference in 'Religion' is based upon the Originating written Documentation, while an 'Organized Religion' is based upon a Pope/Priest/Preacher/Imam/Rabbi/Shaman or other 'Religious Leader' pushing their own 'Interpretation' of the Originating Documentation which then the next 'Religious Leader' puts their own twist on it.....till many many years later, the 'Organized Religion' doesn't teach what the Originating Documentation says.
Here's an small example...the 10 Commandments, is one of them "Thou shalt not Kill"? Answer: No, the actual commandment is 'Thou shalt not Murder' which allows a person to kill another in Self-Defense if attacked, of which we all have a God Given right of Self-Defense. Yet how many Bibles have been printed with this 'Error' of Man in it? We also 'Kill' Animals for food, we don't 'Murder' them, and depending on your Religion you kill certain Animals for Food as the Bible, Torah, or Quar'an, or other Religious Documents specify and if you followed the 'Thou shalt not Kill' people would have to be Vegan or violate this Commandment every time we ate Meat.
