It has literally been a lifetime dream to embody this choreography and same goes with these dedicated dancers who did it with me. Please all show your love in the comments below. I spent hours with these troopers to get this routine as pristine and authentic as possible. I hope @OfficialAnthonyThomas we made you proud. 🤜🤛
When I chose to turn this into a dance video project, I had a deep think about how to represent it in this day and age. The lyrics of this dance still are so relevant and applicable. If you switch on the news, we still suffer from discrimination, racism, segregation and violence however, you cannot dismiss the fact that we still have come a long way from when Janet created the song in 1989. Three decades later, the world has changed drastically in the digital era.
Janet originally shot the music video in black and white but one way to display the our advancement of the world I decided to re-conceptualise our costumes and tweak the choreography to represent our current state. The theme of World Pride came to mind and I felt it appropriate the dancers pick a colour from the rainbow to denote inclusivity. The black still remains to represents that we still got a long way to go to and there is room for improvement. Additionally, we stayed 90% true to the originally choreography but the other 10% you will notice I have purposely changed some sections to dance forms that are more femme which is prevalent today.
