    I've had a Mark Malone card since the 90s and saw that 90 yr TD stat line on the back of the card. I'd always wondered how that happened! Thanks for this story.

      On the one hand I'd like for him to make a decent living off the channel... on the other hand, I'm worried that if he gets a healthy sub count, short sighted copyright owners will demonetize and copyright strike everything.

    Like Randall Cunningham's 91-yard punt, I thought this record was a misprint the first time I read it.

      I was a little kid when UNLV happened to play Colorado State (My dad had season tickets). I don't remember much from that game except the punts were booming higher than I had ever seen before. The punter? Randall Cunningham.

    As much as it pains me, you need to do one on Steve Bono's 76 yard bootleg run on my beloved Cardinals. What made that run great was that it was against Buddy Ryan's vaunted 46 defense and it pretty much personified his run as Cardinals head coach. Ryan was so convinced on a run up the middle that by the time Bono scored(he did the 50 in about 3 weeks he was so slow) there wasn't a Cardinal around for 50 yards.

    Jim Smith's pro football was pretty interesting. Won two SB rings backing up Stallworth and Swann, was very productive as a WR #3/sometime WR#2 (i.e., from 80-82 caught 83-1689-20) and then had a great 3 seasons in the USFL. He came back to the NFL in 1985 with the Raiders at just age 30, but I guess didn't have anything left.

  • @jamesfields2916
    @jamesfields2916 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He had a 98 yard touchdown run against Utah State for Arizona State in 1979. You can see it in the movie ' Used Cars' with Kurt Russell from 1980. The NFL games they hacked in to to show their commercial was actually ASU vs Utah State from 1979. They show his td run.

    • @Paggy6668
      @Paggy6668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not true, even the year before when he was the league MVP he threw 20 ints. He would throw the ball down the field and go for the big play. He was still as dangerous as ever in '79. The Steelers led the league in giveaways with 52 and still had the #1 offense in the NFL.

    Mark Malone's sportscasting career was a weird one as well--he primarily called football but you never really would have known he was a former NFL QB, since he mostly did play-by-play and not color and also even filled in as an ESPNEWS/SportsCenter anchor. I don't think I've ever seen another pro athlete do basic anchor work for ESPN like that.

    I don’t know if Malone was above or below the OJG9 Line (or Nine Line for short) as a quarterback, but if receivers had ratings he’d be at 158.3.
    And since this is a video about the Early 1980s Steelers I anticipate hearing from our favorite Steelers fan, who believes their owner to be brilliant, and believes they absolutely made the right move drafting Gabriel Rivera in 1983!

      It does make one wonder, but then when Don Shula pops up in your mind,
      you finally understand why! He knew a great QB when he saw one. That
      pick Miami had was all Shula, plain, and simple! I went to high school with
      a player for Shula, played in the Super bowl with Marino. Shula knew what
      real talent was. I'm not saying Noll didn't, but most would agree that Shula
      had the edge on talented players who had the heart to win. If the Fins had
      a defense in the mid 80's, they could have dominated a few years, instead of
      the NFC blowing away the AFC for a decade or more. Shula was no dummy.
      He probably knew how dangerous Namath was in SB #3 I'm sure he was
      very aware of those Pittsburgh, Beaver Falls QBs' that played there. So he
      didn't hesitate when one was available.
