In real life, the Emperor Marcus Aurilias was one of the best humans ever. There are many, many u tubes on him with many , many quotes. He had all the power, yet put the people first.
The Romans did hang or strangle criminals, often for treason. Death by "laqueus", or a noose. Roman punishments were diverse and depended on one's social status. Fines, whippings, exile, enslavement, drownings, beheadings, being fed to wild animals, etc. Crucifixions were often used for low-class people, non-citizens, rebellious slaves, prisoners of war, et al.
she slapped him because she knew he killed thier father, she then kissed his hand and said hail caesar because, as Maximus said, she is skilled at survival. If she does not show loyalty her and her son's lives are not long for this world, she also knows how vindictive her brother is
Rome was the name of the capital city and the whole empire later. Everyone with citizenship was a Roman, even those from lands conquered by rome. soldiers that came to execute Maximus were emperor personal bodyguards, as for horses he took 2 bc he knew he had to travel; fast and the road to his home in modern Spain was long. He drove horses to death. Romans used to breed special war dogs not that cute like one from the beginning of the movie. Best wishes from poland. Rome never conquered us! ;p but germans did ...briefly.
If you want to see more roman gladiators I can recommend the series Spartacus, but it's extremly bloody iirc so if you don't like blood you wont like it :)
the script takes a lot of influence from Anthony Mann's film -- The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964). All the characters are based on real people, but some are from different periods of Roman history. Commodus and Lucilla were Marcus Aurelius' children. Commodus was a sick man in real life. Some of the quotes come straight from Meditations. there is some influence from Spartacus (1960) as well.
He took two horses because he knew he was going to run them to death 😢 there is a reason horse races are less than two miles. They can't run like in the old western movies 😊
All citizens living under the roman empire, regardless their origins, under the law, were consider as roman citizens...Maximus is a Spaniard and also a roman citizen.
Out of curiosity, did you not hear or learn of Rome in your younger years? It this information not taught where you are from? I ask because much of the things you ask about ancient Rome is fairly common knowledge.
Maximus visiting the infirmary just shows how much he cares for his men. They had everything for the army, just as now. Back then, food was not in conservation cans, so they needed sheep, horses, cows... There is a video in TH-cam about Roman Army logistics which was quite impressive. Winning a war was always about logistics in the first place.
The way I understand it, or the way I’ve taken it, is, she slaps him as his sister. I think she has an idea that it might be him. Then she kisses his hand as the new emperor.
22:54 Yes, she slapped him because she knew. But she also knew her brother was going to be the emperor, and she is a survivor, so she kissed his hand showing that she would accept him as the emperor.
Maximus, being a high-level military man in the Empire, was given an "estate", which consisted of a nice house, many acres of land and servants. Emperors paid their high-ranking military officers this way. The tradition continued in Europe for centuries, with Kings and Queens granting large estates to their loyal knights and military leaders. The European noble class consisted of wealthy families, whose grand estates were acquired many generations in the past.
The 2 horses- he took 2 so he could ride one to extreme exhaustion/death, then continue on the other that hadn’t been carrying him so he could go as fast as possible. The second horse also barely made it.
And some speak Latin. And lose. If "Roma" had ultimately been "victor" over the Germans Neil Armstrong would never have existed much less spoken to Earth in English from the Moon.
the Chief at the beginning is screaming in German "Ihr seit verfluchte Hunde" -> "Youre Damned Dogs" with a really strong dialect.
Thank you for this comment

This is Rome. They did not hang people. They nailed you to the cross.

It was common practice to kill an enemy's family so that the son does not grow up and take revenge. and also as a warning to others to obey.
Or to take your surrendered enemies children as hostages to ensure the enemies good behaviour and raise their children in your culture.
I was on set of this film as a guest, i saw the beginning battle scene filmed, it was filmed Aldershot military ground
20mins in and I've never seen a reaction that was on the side of Commodus, even this early 😂 I'm betting that will change by the end.

Gladiators were first and foremost slaves.

This is the best movie of all time

Although I already watched a reaction to Gladiator earlier today, I saw your notifications and said Oh hell I've got to watch it again 😊😊😊

It's life.
And washing is cool. To a level that is unknown. or known, whatever.

Would it be cool if we didn't strip rose petals? Because.
It is not nececssary to non stop talk
Not a sword...gladius.
Your style, here + on Patreon, works really well side by side with our own copy of each movie. Its unusual to find on youtube, kind of a good niche
thank you!
Could you be a scribe who writes down words?
Hello

Wow, thank you!
Some people speak German. And lose.

Good reaction
thanks! always nice to hear when someone actually likes my reaction or editing
2:54 Exactly. 'Cavalry' comes from 'caballo' or 'caballero' in Spanish.
