Appendix: The slower excelleration of the BMW is caused by the exorbitant weight of Crankshaft, Flywheel, Clutch and generator. Reducing the weight makes it at sporty engine. I've tried that myself with some succes with the disadvantage of stronger vibrations. On top of that there's some power loss because of the Kardan drive. You have to chose either quickness or a schmooth ride + reliability.

The boxer is the same as the kickstart models.
@wolfdog7265 true but most were fitted with electric start and no kickstart.
Kickstarter and gearbox are pretty much the same as all models of that era.
Kickstart ok, I had a r50 twin in the 60s and was able to start by hand leaning over the bike, don't try it on a brit bike!!
