- i asked the man when texas ended
he said if yer lucky it won’t
i said i gotta a gift i gotta get to fort smith
i was startin to lose all hope
the night was young when he pulled out a gun
the bullet jus missed my nose
i thought i was delivered when i crossed the big river
i thought i knew, but i jus didn’t know
refrain:
i passed over the ozarks
and onto the ouachitas
i skipped from poverty to poverty
fenced in in arkansas, arkansas…
i saw the soybean fields and the flat bed trucks
and i watched the concrete creep
subdivided shoutin on a blackrock mountain
sayin this is how feels to be free
i read the billboard scripture
prophesying my damnation
reaching for his life, preachers on his third wife
out in branson on a big vacation
refrain
i saw a nuclear plant
homegrown
and i know it ain’t fake cause they grew it in a lake
that they built jus to cool it’s bones
they handed out alotta badges
and made alotta energy
that they fired in a wire across state lines
while the state slurps up the fee
and there’s hardly a place that meth aint
planted a dead white kiss
you can smell it in the air you can see it in a chair
itsa pretty damn hard to miss
i saw a law man shrug his whole body
resign in an american god
said if they wanted to, they would help themselves
then he put away his bible and got out a gun
refrain
if god lives up in the rockys
if that’s where the big man meddles
then a lesser being of a lower degree
musta come down here and settled
i met revelators and archimandrites
the big and the belittled
deep in my mind i reckon all in good time
we’re all agonna meet in the middle
refrain
Doxology:
i can’t tell ya where one thing ended and another
did occur
it was new and it was old to me
it was more than i could observe
if what is seen is for the taking
and the taking can be seen
i’m gonna need your help with the calculations
i’m not sure what it all could mean
i passed over the ozarks and onto the ouachitas
i skipped from poverty to poverty
fenced in in arkansas
arkansas…
The mark of great songwriting like this is making me feel like I know something about the soul of a place that I’ve never been to and may never visit. Great stuff!
Couldn't have said it better.
Welcome home
I live across the street from that nuclear plant. Every word is true
Science has proven that it is in fact an ubreakable law of physics that Jesse Welles cannot write a song that sucks.
Not the ones he shows us at least ;)
Trust the science
He’s been writing songs like this since he taught himself to play guitar from library books in jr high…
Been trying to find a bad song.
This is Americana. This is what needs to be said. Some don't want to hear it, but the way Jesse lays it out it'll stick in your head.
I feel lucky to be hearing his music in real time. I hope he keeps singing and playing for a long time.
At this point a new Jesse Welles video is an automatic break to give it my undivided attention. Every word is gold.
,,, same here,, greetings from berlin ...
From Fort Smith- I feel like you’re singing what my eyes witness and watched growing up. So any Arkansans have identified with the ruling class- turning on their fellow working class, talking down on other workers- I’ve seen a lot of people forget where they came from (EBT card, HUD, trailer parks) because they make 30k - year for the first time in their life.
Meanwhile our governor taking her friend on plane rides and watching the Super Bowl while conservatives think free lunches are c0mmunism and 1/3 of the state is unsure where their next meal will come from.
The corruption happens in front of our eyes but people would rather stay silent than stir the pot.
Well said
"said if they wanted to, they would help themselves
then he put away his bible and got out a gun"
What a line.
i met revelators and archimandrites
the big and the belittled
deep in my mind i reckon all in good time
we’re all agonna meet in the middle
true poetry.
❤ been telling as many as I can about this fella. He’s a rare breed.
I keep saying it but it's true, I think we are looking at one of the greatest songwriter musicians of our time right now! Jesse Welles!
Yeah, I agree. If they gave Dylan a Nobel Prize in literature, what will await Jesse? In two months he's left Dylan behind with his level of musical talent and his killer lyrics and insights.
He is outstanding in his field
Yes he is out standing in a field, it may be his!
Yup, like a farmer he is!
@josephharthauer7943 🤣
Im from the UK, i listen to all of Jesses songs because even somehow we can relate to the struggles over here. Keep it coming Jesse ❤️
I’m not good at keeping up with many things but I literally listen to every song the day it comes out from Jesse
Ozarks boy here. Ain’t nothing but truth in this song. Love to ya brother.
You can hear the influence of Hard Rain's Gonna Fall but that is how folk music works. These times called for a man like this and here he finally is. So much pain, so much despair, so much evil, getting called out by this man in the woods. Simple words that were waiting to be said. Hope he knows how much he matters in this broken world.
really? then it's better than the original X-D also screw bob dylan he sold all his music for money
Yeah, but what if he's just having fun making music for us?
Man what a track. Aint heard a folk artist like this in year's
I say this every time you post but this is my favorite of yours so far. Such beautiful poetry, dense and sad and wonderfully woven. Means so much to me.
I have listened to every song that Jesse has dropped and I still haven't found a song that hasn't blown me away. I am in awe of his ability to compliment the melody with lyrics. The overall structure of each song is amazing. I hope that will be recognized for his raw talent because he deserves it.
Sometimes you hear a new song and it sounds like some classic you've known your whole life.
Dude IS the real deal! Exciting to watch this evolve! A legend in the making❤
There has never been a truly great song written about this beautiful natural state.
Until now.
I need to find these woods he hangs out in. I can live on Jesse Welles songs, water and poke salad.
Keep ripping open those hearts that will listen,....your WORDS ARE FIRE to a dried reality.
My goodness this is the true soul of America. Makes me think of a quote from Mexican poet, Cesar A. Cruz, “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” This certainly comforts me and many others. Keep on keepin’ on, brother.
Also, don’t know if it’s intended, but the main chord formation sounds like a wonderful throw back to Nick Drakes song, Joey. Fantastic, dude.
Another amazing poor-mans ballad. Love the trip you took us through the south.
the part about the nuclear plant reminded me of the fact that pine bluff, AR is only place in the Northern Hemisphere where white phosphorus munitions are filled. the fact that those plants were so close to my own home and used to commit unspeakable crimes against the people in gaza just broke my heart and ur music echoes that grief and pointed rage i felt learning that fact so so well.. ur truly a gem jesse welles
Not quite sure that was the message this song was sending but go off I guess
Art moves people in different ways. Her comment is completely relevant
@@cartermize6651 didn't say it wasn't, just said I wasn't sure it aligned with his message. I grew up in the same area and the part I took from the nuclear plant was not that the problem was with it existing, the problem is all the power from it gets sent out of state while the residents of Arkansas have to pay the taxes used to build and maintain it while receiving no benefits from its existence. Us in the Ozarks have so many problems we have to deal with locally we could honestly care less about what happens somewhere on the other side of the globe. It is a place of privilege to be able to care about that. We don't have that privilege, especially not since covid when a ton of people from California and Colorado moved in and jacked the cost of living up to the point nobody who grew up here can afford to live even here now. This was exacerbated in areas that have sort of natural beauty because corporations and rich people from out of town started buying up all the single family properties and turning them into AirBnBs that sit empty all the time. When you are worrying about what your kids are gonna eat and where they're gonna sleep, what happens in Israel is the absolute least of your concern.
from Arkansas: yep and the nuclear plant is in Russellville.
This song will blow up. No doubt. Your doin it brother man. Be careful. I hear theres alot of trouble at the top.
the band he was in should have also been at the top
Thanks again for adding the lyrics in the description. This is incredible
God damn Jesse well done. Your voice is haunting over this chord progression.
The more I listen to this song the better it gets!
That's an incredible song bud 😎👍
I live in Australia but my goodness this is a beautiful, evocative and haunting song. 👏 👏 👏 👏
as an arkansan i’m legally allowed to say this is a perfect song.
I live in Newton county Arkansas and love the references in this song
The tone of the guitar, the lyrics, and the vocals are like riding a roller coaster...amazing.
As much as the decline of the current state of affairs bums me out, it is a breeding ground for some fine folk music.
Jesse, how in the world do you expect me to keep coming up with different ways to say how amazing your works are? Keep it up!
The songwriting gets better each time, absolutely incredible
True
So many amazing songs! The summer of Jesse Welles. Thank you.
An album would be so amazing. Just such a good way to listen all the way thru.
If doc Watson, John Prine, Utah Philips and George Carlin had a kid .. that kid wouldn’t be 1/2 the artist Jesse Welles is .. I can’t speak highly enough..
Release the truth pirate!!
This dude is great! And I mean great but reel it in a bit buddy, got a long way to go for that comparison
@@ml.9746😂
@@ml.9746 Nah, Jesse is a once in a generation wordsmith and musician.
Twice in a day, and both great. Good bless, J.W. Also, please buy his music. The man has to eat.
Your lyrical skills are fantastic! It makes us old hippies smile. 😁🤩🥰
the mood his surroundings, his voice, and his guitar all come together to create is so beautiful
This is the best song I’ve heard you write yet.. lyrics are potent man
Ps stay away from Marietta Ohio
Seeing Jesse welles live is the only thing on my bucket list
Jesse’s shit is so good that I find myself beginning and ending each day checking for the next song. It’s crazy how I feel like a better informed person after every song. I am starting to catch a habit though. I’m up to where one’ll do, but three or four is where it’s at. Thankfully he keeps bringing so much good gear, that I’m always able to save a wake up for the morning. Fuck it... I’ll just have to kick later, I guess.
Some off his songs are good but it's getting a bit same old same old for me.
I get it. But he’s obviously got a lot to say, and he’s getting it out. For me, almost every song has at least one verse that really resonates. He’s had me googling shit after a song. There’s not a huge variety of sound in these songs… my assumption is it’s more about him venting and expressing some frustration with the baffling divisive shit show that our society has become.
I definitely agree with your last point mate. I feel that an all out revolution is getting closer every day.
Brother Welles, please don’t stop
this is real shit. Love from East Texas
As an arkansan I approve this message 👍 meth is literally eveywher
This guy genuinely drops a song a day. This is kinda crazzy.
Keep up the hard work brother. Your music is art. Thank you for sharing with us
Grew up just north of the arkansas border in the st francis mountains. This hits home.
As always man, thank you
Incredible stuff. This is definitely one of my favorites of yours.
I bet this guy has one song to release every day between now and the year 2057.
He certainly has things on his mind that he puts to brilliant use!
Playing the pokeweed patch. Well played ❤
This guy is genius level!!! Awesome!!!
finally some good fucking lyrics
I grew up in the South Bay in California and moved to Arkansas in 1987. From my point of view, Arkansas is better. The ticks are bad though. Love the song Jesse!
i just moved to the south bay and i can't lie, i've never had more cynicism and ire to write music with in my life. can't imagine growing up here.
I have not been this excited about an up and coming musician in a long time. I deeply hope and feel that he will become a strong voice for the next generation as we take the seat of power. I will pray for your strength and health and encourage you to continue making music for as long as you have it in you.
He has many other songs under different bands, should google him and his bands. Different genre though. But he's been making music for many years now.
I feel the same way.
Of all your tunes, this is my favorite. It's absolutely... it's incredible.
Absolutely incredible. Just had open heart surgery on Monday, so I have been away for awhile. And here I come back to find some more absolutely incredible tunes released from ya. Excellent work, man. Cannot wait to keep coming back for more💯💯
fantastic songwriting......you nailed it
I'm from Kansas. That's how Arkansaw should be spelled.
Keep the great music coming.
🇺🇸🤘👍
Wow...This fella is an old soul. I feel like I'm back in the 70s.
dude, i feel like i'm back in the 60s
@@zimma2330 I was born in 67 so I don't remember the 60s. lol
Dude this is seriously important. Godspeed Jesse Welles. Godspeed
This one really hits the soul. Beautiful notes and lyrics. Hope you blow up big man.
love how he is just in nature, so down to earth, amazing talent ❤
You've got it, man
This man is so good! Bob Dylan of our time.
Phenomenal song Jesse. Come to New Jersey anytime if you wanna lay down one of these tracks all analog. We’ve got an old Studor 800 tape machine and a ton of amps in a nice lil live room with great classic mics. Could really capture your style perfectly.
Any time you need, you come on by, and I’ll fund it. Just gotta show up. 🍻🤘
Sophisticated, raw, and well crafted. This man is a true musical genius. He deserves all the accolades.
brother, this is so painfully relevant and profoundly beautiful to me right now. may we both find quiet and peace tonight
There's just no words to express how wonderful, moving, true. Thank you.
I moved here to Arkansas 18 years ago, from California.
Since I have a choice ... I ♥️ Arkansas.
✌🏻🇺🇲💜🇺🇲😇
This is the greatest song I’ve heard in a very long time
Another good one ….you keep playing I’ll keep listening. Thank you sir.
So, War Isn't Murder, Fentanyl, etc those are bracing and new favorites but this combines your truth telling with some really beautiful music and melody. GD you're good.
Keep the songs coming man your what the world needs right now great job man ypur songs are down right bone chilling gives me goosebumps cause you talk so much about whats going on in the world today and it's amazing 👏
nature literally doing backing vocals with the wind
From the Ozarks, myself. SW Missouri. Good song!!!
Because of a few recent covers he's been posting I assumed this was too. 🙂 Really concise, no fluff, song writing down to the bone.
wonderful song as always, and really, really important lyrics
Good god this mans a legend in the making!
haunting and wistful. i really hope you release an album so i can support you! i would buy a digital or physical happily
I'm chillin' day n' night ~ I just O.D.'d on a 10-song set of Jesse!! 😊
,
Jesse. I really really love your songs. Poems really. God bless you, you touch people’s hearts and open their eyes.
I just start sharing as soon as I get about 1/4 of the way through these days.
Powerful stuff, man. Truth.
Can’t wait for a tour or just getting my hands on that album…
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR! Keep it up big dawg! Love what you're doing
Thank you for the poetry as always. Much respect!
Just amazing!!! You have a gift, Jesse.
Woah i live in Fort Smith, AR!! I never hear song about Arkansas, let alone my part of the state! So cool!!!
This song is almost giving southern gothic in a way. Love the poignant lyrics as always
Arkansas has such a huge problem with meth it breaks my heart:(
You are Magical! 💥
Love from Joplin. Too real.
And from Jonesboro.
Where’s the goddamn patreon. Or let us buy albums
I did activism in Fort Smith during their big motorcycle rally. And now I'm in Wichita! This is so good.
Moved to AR about a year and a half ago and I'm really feeling this song. My only note is that it's pronounced "wah-chi-tah"
Love the way you play guitar, write, and sing
One of your best, wow.
