For those who may not know, this bit is itself a parody of the 1970 Canadian film "Goin' Down the Road", about 2 Maritimers trying to make it in Toronto.

  • @crazyrabbits

The best part is that it's connected to the Hinderland Who's Who PSA that appears earlier in the episode. All the skits in the episode have heavy continuity with each other - another reason SCTV is still a cut above everything else.

SCTV... the true measuring stick for off the wall comedy..Just ask Dan Akroyd! They got blasted by the CRTC for not having enough "Canadian content" in the programming. Hence, Bob and Dougs great white north, hinterland whos who mockumentaries, and this absolute, pure genius of a skit with 2 maritimers and a french Canadian goin to Yong st for "doctorin jobs n' lawyerin jobs".... lol. This cast set a massive standard for quality comedy programming that stands to this day.

It's actually a spoof, not a skit. This is directly poking fun at Don Shebib's 1970 movie "Goin' Down The Road" about 2 Maritimers heading to Toronto with big dreams and leaving with nothing. So they Canadian Contented the hell out of the show with this one.

Too bad couldn't show first the "Hinterland Who's Who" parody of the CBC, with John Candy's deadpan narration, which preceded this segment in the SCTV full episode. Hilarious episode overall with all the CBC jokes, "Monday Night Curling" and every 2nd character named Gord :) I think its out there on TH-cam. Fiona's off-handed remark "I thought them woodchuck things only hibernated in snowy climes huh?" is my favourite joke from any SCTV.
