All the hate towards this instrument is weird to me. It sounds so menacing, so scary and threatening that it invokes feelings of fright. This instrument truly is an awesome creation, as is any instrument that can invoke such strong feelings.
Ya it’s kinda dumb honestly. Looks like it belongs in a miniature golf course. And the sounds really isn’t good either. Just kinda a silly thing honestly
@@barronweir123 I mean if you just look at a demonstration of how low it can go, yes it is silly. But if you look at it used in an actual orchestra (the only one who has it is the Montreal Symphony Orchestra) it's pretty much an orchestral string subwoofer, which is great in my opinion.
Beautiful. I just love that deep throaty voice! (and I do mean the octobass' voice...) As a keyboard player I have various instruments that can go this low in range, but there's not much that can authentically replicate the sound of a genuine bowed instrument. I also play cello, and there's a huge variety of nuances obtainable by just moving or tilting your bow slightly.
I find it interesting that its played with sort of mega-German bow. I always imagined that it would be played with a bow that more or less resembled a two person crosscut saw.
If you are wondering how it's played, watch the video. There is no second player, there are keys on the side. The melody he plays is the Dies irae, a Gregorian chant sequence - "Day of Wrath." He also plays the very lowest note, a 16 hz C, below the range of most human hearing. The tone sounds like it's shuddering because you're not actually hearing the fundamental, you're hearing the overtones and the resultant cannot be formed adequately by the human ear. Elephants' ears can hear the pitch.
Some double basses can reach the C or the B thanks to an additional string (a third/fourth lower than the standard E). Octobass lowest note is an octave lower than these.
Thanks for the notice about the low notes. I'm trying out some thing to see if I can give doctors relevant/reference to my experiences. Some of this is relatable to my GI and other symptoms. Muscle spasms and discoordination of usually timed muscle activity. Sorry if it doesn't make sense but your upload is very helpful! Thank you from a music lover. ♡
an octave below the low C on cello would be the low C on an extended (or 5 string) bass; this octobass is 2 octaves below a cello & 1 octave below a double bass....
@mortalfrog0815 How about that! According to Wikipedia, "Octobass has been scored for in autographs of many composers including Hector Berlioz, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Brahms, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and others." I didn't see anything about him using any in Symphonie Fantastique, though.
This is probably the best video demonstrating the range of this instrument. Other videos are in concert with other instruments which drown out the octobass, at least when listening on computer speakers.
It is certainly the Dies Irae theme (which also is used in the Fantastique) and when thinking about Berlioz who asked for its design it would not be strange. However, the octobass does not appear in the score of the Fantastique.
@MotokoStarwind Absolutely I can keep a camera steady. I was a broadcasting major in college, there are tricks you can use to keep it steady when you don't have a tripod available. You don't need a counterweight most of the time.
I've heard of these but never actually seen one. I've heard of a version of this that took two people to play. One guy had to stand on a stool and doo the fingers while the other guy did the bowing.
I wonder what the case would look like lol. If Wagner used these back in the day, there must have been a way to transport them around. Unless of course they belonged to the music hall or something.
He was only joking around, could you not tell? Great video by the way. I have my laptop hooked up to the sound system and could hear most of the notes except the 15 Hz, all I heard was a helicopter! Heheheh
I guess the next step up (or down 😜) would be to take a wooden bungalow, and attach strings to the top. Never mind using horse hair for a bow, but just do as Darth Vader told Luke: "Use the Horse!"
He did actually explain about two people playing it...either before or after I took the video, I can't remember. Really, that's the ONLY way this thing could be played properly.
1. Plug in to Amp 2. Mix yoghurt and red food colouring 3. Guzzle item 2 4. Crank up item 1 flat out 5. Poke tongue out like a lizard 6. Spit and drool out item 3 7. Pull more chicks than anyone ever
The Mythbusters investigated the "brown note" and couldn't find it. Maybe there are frequencies that can get your bowels moving on prolonged exposure, like in a factory, but there doesn't seem to be any sound that can induce sudden diarrhea.
Hi, my name is Kevin Mannikko and I play the octobass in my elemetary school orchestra. My teacher told me to play a smaller intrument, but i said NOOOOOOOO!!!! I don't need to use the levers becuase I'm like 10 ft. 3in. tall. I'm the tallest elementary schooler ever. I'm also a big fan of Teapots and Macaroni and Cheese!!!
Ocotobass instruments were played by giants long ago...
All the hate towards this instrument is weird to me. It sounds so menacing, so scary and threatening that it invokes feelings of fright. This instrument truly is an awesome creation, as is any instrument that can invoke such strong feelings.
You should play it lol if u can I have no idea if there even in music stored
Ya it’s kinda dumb honestly. Looks like it belongs in a miniature golf course. And the sounds really isn’t good either. Just kinda a silly thing honestly
i agree. some people just don't appreciate more esoteric sounds in music.

@@--027 you can like it. I think it's dumb. Am I allowed to think that?
it's like playing a wooden cabinet with strings on it
Man, look at that string vibrations when he does that low C. Insane!
This is an awesome instrument. Exceptionally well made. It sounds like it is supposed to sound.
Bb0,F0,C0?
This is like some sunn o))) stuff right here.
Pure sound!!! Primordial and gut wrenching!! Thank you for sharing, keep up the good work!!!
Seeing the lowest string vibrating is something fearsome O_O O_O ...
If it snapped and hit him in the face accidentally it would probably take his eye out or something.
*First sees the instrument..... Jaw drops* WOW never seen that before!
"This thing is so big... You can't finger it." Amazing just amazing.
Finally someone playing it and not just talking about it. Definitely not a solo instrument ..lol
If you try hard enough it is
1:29
Oh, that's the favorite sound of my neighbors at 6:30am every weekend :///
Charles Gounod wrote for it in his St. Cecilia Mass. It is in the Benedictus and Agnus Dei movements. (That is what brought me to this Video).
Strong enough to shake the earth's core
WOW, portable XD

Damn, this is so amazing. Every basshead/dubstep listener should listen to this, haha.
SunnO))) needs one of these.
I find it interesting that its played with sort of mega-German bow. I always imagined that it would be played with a bow that more or less resembled a two person crosscut saw.
@Strefanasha It's tuned CGC, the low C being C0, a note that usually only large organs can play.

turn it on its side.....chellooooo. base!
BA_300_AAC as a fellow school of Rock fan I'm sorry about the dark times Nickelodeon is taking us through

Sounds like the depths of hell.
Music and human anatomy, what a great demonstration.

I was in that room today, I'm glad I found this.

Incrível. Eu nunca vira um Octabaixo antes! Nem sabia que existe esse instrumento...
Thank you for this video✨
Oh my god I see a guitarron in the back and it just brings memories
1:01 that's what she said lol
It's an awesome instrument!
Its lowest note is C, so you could say that it is in drop C (from a certain perspective). It's tuned C0 G0 C1.

Chuck Norris´ toy violin

I love how he plays the opening theme from "The Shining" to add a horrific effect.
imagine apocalyptica playing this instrument

i would hate to play one of these if i lived in a studio apartmnt
The instrument would BE your studio apartment!
les claypool has to get a hold of one of these things
Love the way he just starts blasting out the Dies Irae...
Wow... never heard one actually played before. I saw one on display in the Music Instrument museum in Paris, France....
my teacher from my double bass lessons, is making also a octobass. and it's insane! its so awesome but also such a creep noise (:
It gives me chills :)
this is amazing

Intro to "the shining"! Awesome.
I want to shake the hand of whoever conceived of this instrument
He is playing "Dies Irae", a medieval sequencia.
but does it djent?
Fábio Solimann
Ask Rob Scallon.
Better yet, ask him if he could make a song with this
Cesar Moreno I already did😏
Probably. It's got a super low string that is below the threshold of human hearing.
All it does is djent
@FilmComposeRaHoppe i think its because it can actually be played this looks more like a novelty
Look! An elephant whistle! Finally, a convenient way to call back your elephant.
I like that he starts out by playing the "Dies Irae" from the Requiem Mass...
I've heard of these but never actually seen one. I've heard of a version of this that took two people to play. One guy had to stand on a stool and doo the fingers while the other guy did the bowing.

Djent, the early days
+Théo Beauval but the question remains...
But does it Djent???
That awkward moment when your kid comes up to you and says they want to learn to play the octobass =P
@PRSLRider You have disproven my theory that the intellectual don't hang out on TH-cam. Thanks for the pun!!!
AMAZING!!!

Its the only Instrument known to man that can play the Brown note.
Oh interesting 🤗 like some sounds, some not. Didn't know that this instrument exists, till now
@Suetekh27 Yes, I think traditionally that's how it's played. Just because it's kind of awkward to do both.
god damn that huge. Glad VH1's documentary called "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" told me about this
The Dies Irae! Love it!
He was only joking around, could you not tell? Great video by the way. I have my laptop hooked up to the sound system and could hear most of the notes except the 15 Hz, all I heard was a helicopter! Heheheh

dude I'd love to hear some extended techniques on that thing!
OHMYGOODNESSGRACIOUSME
I presume that the quality was much better in person, then?
マリッジトキシンよりきました。ド低音ですね。
I'm really a musical instruments expert, but I have never seen a guitar this big!!! :-)
not the over tones but a C pitch on a cello just an octave or 2 lower
shining theme !
Useful for communicating with dolphins and elephants?
Very amusing thumbs up.
the way the guy tunes it is Baller.
One doesn't create an obelisk like this for its practicality, rather it is constructed to defy limitation!!!
Very nice!
He seems to be playing the theme of Liszt's "totentanz" :)
if they'd really use that octobass it might be even scarier :p
it sounds like "the Bloop"😨
Lmao

9. Put video on TH-cam.
10. PROFIT
(11. repeat step 7)
Wouldn't mind hearing Mr Claypool do Mr Krinkle on this...
The Mythbusters investigated the "brown note" and couldn't find it. Maybe there are frequencies that can get your bowels moving on prolonged exposure, like in a factory, but there doesn't seem to be any sound that can induce sudden diarrhea.
Wagner use this in a lot of songs... and its really really powerfull

he was using the harmonics to tune and the camera woman said he was tuning by feeling the vibrations lmao.
@Emceetem That would be sweet, we just need to bring him back to life...... R.I.P.
Fascination pure, da capo.👌
@Dekko96 no... en realidad muchos estamos aquí gracias a Cuanta Razón...
I bet that's what a singing T-Rex would sound like
Rumor has it the person who invented in it is buried in one
I would love to hear/see you play "Jaws"
Really doomsday sound: The celestial demoniac sound!!!!! Every avant garde music would like to have one in his collection!!!!!
Вот бы его в живую послушать! Камера такие низкие звуки не передаёт.
Даже от видео мурашки, не от каждого тяжёлого метала бывают...
@SgtPenguin117 i wonder if there's a part for that instrument in the symph. fantastique... he sure liked to use unconventional instruments!
And we are just singing along with the song he is playing.
nice....the Dies Irae!!!! & well played indeed
This guy should do a duet with the contrabass saxophone kid.
