Great music artists know how to get passed all your defenses, all your walls, all your hesitations, and just reverberate in your soul. And it really does make you feel helpless, but in a beautiful way.
Totally agree with you. TH-cam has allowed me to see so many performances that I maybe saw ONCE on live tv in the 60s or 70s, or things I had never seen. Great reaction!
The town Neil was mentioning in "Helpless" is Omemee, Ontario (population 1,200 ~ 1 set of traffic lights), a small town down the road from where I live. It's actually in central-eastern Ontario, but I guess that doesn't sounds as poetic as north Ontario. Neil's father lived there until his death in 2005 and I believe Omemee was where Neil contracted polio. I wonder whether the line "all of my changes were there" had something to do with that. Your channel has become one of my favourites Shawn. Thank you for all the time, effort & heart you put into it.
Beautiful version by Neil, The Band and Joni. Joni was backstage singing as she was waiting for her turn to perform so they didn't show her as not to spoil the surprise. You should listen to the Band's "I Shall Be Released", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up On Cripple Creek" to name a few.
One of the best shows I've seen was a later years version of "The Last Waltz" at Levon Helm's 70th Birthday celebration at Mountain Jam 6 in 2010 at Hunter Mountain N.Y. . Hunter is about a half hour from Woodstock N.Y. where Levon came to live & put on shows at his studio / performance place . Many great artists came thru The Barn & The Black Crowes even recorded their album "Before the Frost , Until the Freeze" . Mountain Jam had begun as a 1 off event in 2005 but went so well it wound up becoming a regular event at Hunter from 2005 thru 2017 before it moved to Bethel Woods , the amphitheater that is located at the spot of the original Woodstock . Gov't Mule were the annual hosts of the event & Warren Haynes the bands leader was the Curator of organizing the bands to invite to play the festival . Warren is well respected everywhere , but this is by his 2nd home of NYC & he was always on top of good bands out of "The Jam Band Scene" but many older acts also played the festival , The Allman Brothers appeared twice , Hot Tuna , 2 of Grateful Dead band members off shoot bands , Phil Lesh & Friends stopped by twice (BTW there is an epic version from Phil's 2nd go round headlining the festival of "Shakedown Street" that lasts for 20 minutes . That version of Phil's band had Warren Haynes on Guitar with jazz virtuoso Jon Scofield . Mountain Jam does have an official youtube page with many performances on it but much of the earlier years of the festival don't seem to be online anymore ) and Bob Weir's Ratdog also headlined one year . Anyway For Levon's 70th as that years headline event , many of the performers of the weekend took part in a recreation of The Last Waltz Concert which closed with a great sing along with all the guests & crowd joining in for "I Shall Be Released " ( and if you want to see a soul stirring version of that song , Mountain Jam regular Grace Potter was amazing performing it at Levon's memorial concert after his passing ) Loved your reaction's . I love watching a new generation finding & appreciating all the great music I grew up with . 🙂
I was at a Manassas concert at the Berkeley Community Theatre and toward the end, the stage went dark and then a single spotlight cut through to the stage and Neil Young was standing there and he began to sing this song. David came out later and with Neil and Stills did ‘Find the Cost of Freedom’ as the closer.
If you haven’t, you should watch the entire Last Waltz film. It’s filled with great performances, including many from the boys in The Band - to me the greatest roots music ensemble of all time.
'Forever Young'....Bob Dylan (Last Waltz) and 'Cayote'....Joni Mitchell (Last Walt) You have this music now Shawn...make sure your children know it....and carry it forward with their children Keep the music alive !!!!!
Glad you came back to this awesome concert, Yea, Dylan was a guest. The Band were Dylan's touring band when he started going electric, it was a tense time for Dylan folk fans. Muddy Waters was also a musical guest in this concert. Lastly, music is a powerful thing. Your mind can take you to a certain incident or place just by listening to a particular song. A very young lady rocker once said ''Music is passion... music is hope...music is life, bet you can guess who that was, cheers Shawn!
Oops. I accidentally killed him off in a conversation yesterday. I introduced a friend to The Band, and I was like, "That's Richard Manuel. He's dead. That's Rick Danko. He's dead. The drummer with the wicked vocals? That's Levon Helm. Dead. That's Robbie Robertson. He just died. That's Garth Hudson. He was a little older than the others, so I'm pretty sure he's dead."
The "Helpless" Unplugged version by Neil from 1993 is a near religious experience. (he accompanies himself on the piano). Check it when you get the chance. Have tissue on the ready. Great reaction!
Neil can sing a soft, sweet ballad or rock like a runaway train. But his lyrics are always filled with emotion and feelings from the heart. His song "Birds" is a poetic and introspective song that explores themes of love, loss, and the pursuit of freedom. These are the things Neil sings about the most. He always takes listeners on a journey of self-reflection and longing, painting a vivid picture of the complexities of human relationships. The man is an Icon. I saw him live with Linda Ronstadt as the opening act. It was like a fever dream of goodness.
I will never forget the contribution made by BILL GRAHAM, whose hand prints are all over this show. He provided the set and setting for this and thousands of other shows. Thank you Bill
Love how into the music they all are. Robbie's expression when Neil starts singing, and Rick standing on the sidelines observing it all, priceless. Also Robbie's expression is so cute, when Neil says what a pleasure it is to be on the stage with The Band, he looks almost embarrassed and a little emotional, which is unlike Robbie.
Yes! Thankful for TH-cam!!!!! This whole concert is very special, but like you, Van The Man may have to be my fave performance, tho I really love this by Neil too. Joni performs her song "Coyote". A local theater had midnight showings on Friday nights and I went every week. Also had it on VCR (remember VCR?). I've seen it countless times and it never gets old, even if we do. They also used to show Neil's "Live Rust" concert and also Zep's "The Song Remais The Same". Damn those were some good days! Music has been my therapist for over 50 years
Many good songs on The Band's debut album 'Music from Big Pink' (1967): As you've mentioned "The Weight", also "Chest Fever", "I Shall be Released", "Tears of Rage"', "We Can Talk", "Long Black Veil", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheel's on Fire", and more.

The powder - according to the 2002 Young biography, Shakey - proved so unmissable in the footage that Young’s longtime manager demanded that Scorsese have it removed in postproduction. That documentary was awesome - great to watch all the way through- so much great convo not musical ., van’s performance was great but this was my favorite
The only story about The Band which has stuck with me was the one from Festival Express where the musicians on the train got their money together and bought a huge bottle of liquor mounted on a stand which tilted and allowed the bottle to dispense one shot of liquor at a time. By that evening it was full of many different brightly colored pills and capsules. One of the other singers was trying to get Robbie to take a shot and he said I saw all those pills resting at the bottom of the bottle and there was no way I was gonna take a drink out of that! The band was probably too straight to be partying with Janis Joplin, and Jerry Garcia.
You obviously don't know the story of The Band. They all did drugs (it is all in Robbie's book Testimony), Levon Helm, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko did heroin, Robbie did drugs, pills, cocaine, pot, but he stayed away from heroin. He was also a little more responsible than the other members, with Robbie the music always came first, and by the time he was in his early thirties he had 3 small children. Rick Danko and Janice apparently had a ball on the Festival Express, singing together. As Eric Clapton said about Rich, when it comes to having fun Rick is the leader.
It is a fascinating read, not only about Robbie, he is a great storyteller, but also about the Band and the sixties (my generation) and some of the seventies as well. It is available from Amazon and other on line booksellers, I bought it from a local discount bookstore where I live in Northern California. I also read Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band "Across the Great Divide", which gives a more balanced view if all of them. Both fascinating, if you love The Band.@@michaeldavidfigures9842
I don't hear this as a sad song. More wistful, I think, or like the Japanese expression "natsukashi" (pronounced "natskashee"). An inchoate yearning for times/experiences in the past. Not wanting to go back but acknowledging how helpless we all are in the ways the past informs our present emotions. Joni followed Neil in this concert so she hung back, although fortunately for us all her voice did not. This is Joni a little later on in this concert singing her own "Coyote": th-cam.com/video/f7MbmXklj3Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sysrVJV8Eep0mNrQ

Neil's Live Rust was one of the epic live albums of the late 70's. It's loaded with fantastic performances.
100% Dead On The Money About That Masterpiece Of Music.

All the tunes/artists at the Last Waltz were just awesome! Check 'em ALL out!

Yes, however the other musicians that joined in The Last Waltz were from all over, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Ringo, Ronnie Wood.@@Wordsmyth8

To play the harmonica while playing the guitar - Neil is a phenomenal, multi-talented artist!

Neil Young is my favorite singer and I’ve seen him in concert twice and you have The Band and Joni Mitchell, this is music!

My favorite version of Helpless. I love Neil. Yes definitely do Dylan's turn.
Robbie wrote in his book "as soon as Neil Young came out, I knew no one at Winterland was feeling better than Neil".
CS&N THE "Wasted on the Way" pretty much a synopsis of their troubled career.
I will never forget the contribution made by BILL GRAHAM, whose hand prints are all over this show. He provided the set and setting for this and thousands of other shows.

I did a painting based on this song back in the day.
"All I have is my honor,
A tolerance for pain
A couple of college credits
And my top-notch brain"
All you need to fight "helplessness".

Theres a great movie/documentary, Echo in the Canyon by Jakob Dylan about this period musical period.
Speaking of Joni Mitchell, I would love to see your reaction to her Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, reportedly about James Taylors heroin addiction.
P.S. I always love when artists have a whole stage... byt you could film it in a phonebooth
