    You are a lucky man to be able to say "1960 Bassman," and "1964 Strat," in the same video.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  11 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      Yes, I know. That is exactly why I decided to do TH-cam videos. I wanted to share them with everyone so they could hear what they sounded like just in case they might want to buy vintage equipment in the future. It's been a real adventure talking to everyone from all over the world and it is remarkable how many Hendrix fans there are worldwide. Thanks for watching.

      ***** All vintage is used... that's kind of the point. And it depends on the years you're looking for, the maker, the condition you'll accept, and your budget. (Sorry, I know you were asking millstap, just thought I' give my input.

      ***** Sorry, but I had to laugh at this post. Used and vintage are not the same thing and I don't believe there is a such thing as "cheap vintage".

      65/66 black/red/yellow/clear sunburst CBS bought it s/h in 68 ... sadly stolen with orig. case and a VOX 847 stuffed into the ample storage areas ... imagine worth a few bucks these days?

    You're pretty good too man.. rock on!

      Yes, I think I play this song more than any others. It's surprising that I can't remember ever seeing a band cover it.

      @@millstap SRV covered it i remember hearing it in a bar in amsterdam & i said this is not hendrix & the barman said yeah its hendrix.smiled & said its SRV playing hendrix & i said he got the tones close but i would rather hear the original version have you got it & he said no.i just got some great pedals but im not sure if the fuzz wau i got is the same as the one i heard.its an ibanez fuzz wah i saw an elk version that was dearer but it didnt dial the same.tones i heard on the ibanez version twice i heard him dial some sweet tones one part had some nice 60,s fuzz another part he dialled in almost sounded like it was going backwards with that lush haunting reverb sound.the one i brought had standard fuzz wau wau writen on it his one had fuzz wau.i would like to get an original fuzz face but at 1200 its just too dear but ive got 2 fuzz effects now so ill see what i can get from these pedals.ive seen a nice oil can fender reverb unit im tempted to get but ive got a vintage tremelo amp to sell before i can spend anymore.i brought a new fender with b3 pick ups a while back i guess its fenders version of humbuckers.but to be honest i prefer my 90,s strat with single coil pick ups sounds better & the reverb sounds much better but mobile phone signal,s affect it so i have to get my mate to turn it off when we jam.what i wanted to ask you was can you suggest a good make of effects board that i need to use affects at the same time then i can combine affects like a fuzz octive tape echo & reverb all at the same time lol.cause i believe the pedal overwrite,s the amp signal maybe i need a reverb unit to combine fuzz & reverb.but what ive been told is hendrix used a fuzz pedal then octive pedal because it made the octive pedal go up another octive.not sure if that is right but im gonna try it with patch cables to see if linking them makes a difference to using them separately , great tones mate i still come back & listen peace...

      Somewhere in late 2000s I listened Eric Clapton playing it on his concert. Steve Winwood was guest on keys just like on original. I remember him saying it was not an easy thing to learn to play it. It gave me chills listening it live with a guy who was there with Jimi recording it. And it was not closely as good as original. Best live cover I heard was Frank Marino. He was killing it

  • @millstap
    @millstap  13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @M16Tman For starters, don't neglect your singing. That is the one thing I regret never working on but I never did have a great voice. It will help you in the long run because you will be able to do the songs you like with a band. Even if your voice isn't great, you will need the coordination of playing and singing at the same time. It will also affect your guitar phasing when you fill in with guitar between lyrics. Practice a lot. I've been playing 41 years and I still practice a lot.

    I have an all original 1960 Bassman in excellent condition. I have it posted for sale in my reverb store but after I listen to your vids I want to keep it. Ive seen them sell for 10K. Listed mine for 7K but maybe I should just keep it for myself (lol). Rare for sure. Love the vids!

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if it is original, I would keep it unless you need the money. I will hand these down to my kids and grandkids. Hopefully they take good care of them. It is very difficult to find an all original 1960 Bassman without some kind of changes made to it. Keep it. I'm working on mine this morning. I had a 5751 tube in V1 which has a little more gain than the original 12AY7's that came in the amp. I am putting a low noise 12AY7 (6072) back in to see how it sounds. They distort less so I think it will be good.

  • @millstap
    @millstap  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @M16Tman That's a good choice. I see they have a new III version out. They are real popular. The trick with tone is to get the simplest circuit you can and that is why I was steering you towards a vintage amp or build your own. The point-to-point wired amps (vs. PCB or printed circuit board) are simple and more dependable and they get better with age. But, a Blues Jr. is a close second. The reverb sounds good on it too.

    After using a regular pick for 40+ years, I recently tried several thumb picks until I settled on the Dunlop Zookies L-20 mainly for comfort and attack. I am always open to trying new picks. I will give the Pickboy a try. I may eventually switch back. I tried the thumb pick mainly because of Johnny Winter. They are expensive but one advantage is you can't drop them on stage and you don't have to palm them during finger picking. I'm always looking for something faster. Thanks for the tip.

  • @millstap
    @millstap  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It works for what I need it for. I get a nice amount of feedback from it. I don't use the octave much. I wish it had a mix knob for the fuzz so I could dial it down sometimes. I think you would have more control with two separate units but there are so many out there, I wouldn't know where to begin looking. I've been interested in the new baby fuzzfaces Dunlop came out with. There are great Ocatavia's out there. I have limited space on my board so I just got the unit that had everything.

    @1954telecaster Yes $1800 is good if everything else is original. Don't get one that has had all of the coupling caps replaced (the blue ones on the board). They should show this if they are serious sellers. The electrolytic caps in the pan should have been changed already and should not be more than 6 years if you don't want to change them again. You could easily find the missing speaker on ebay if you want to put it back to original.

    @millstap  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @1954telecaster I just realized that I should be recommending a 1964-1967 blackface Super Reverb to everyone that wants a great amp for less than $2000. Now that I think about it, that is probably one of the best bargains around. It's very clean when you need it and it likes pedals a lot. You won't get the Bassman tone but many blues players use it. Watch the latest blues concert at the White House with Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck and Mick Jagger. It was a row of blackface Fender amps.

    @M16Tman through the patterns. Eventually, try to hear a lick in your head a pick it out on the neck without mistakes. If you can do that, you will find that you can play things you improvise a lot better and play some jazzy stuff when needed. If you want a good amp for that price, you need to think small for now. I would look at Champs or Princetons. Get a vintage Champ or blackface Princeton Reverb. A lot of famous recordings were done with those amps. I built a Princeton type amp.

    fantastic playing and a marvelous sounding amp indeed... pure magic tone.. Maybe this question has been answered earlier on here or at another video, but are you able to give or publish all the readings/values of the reSistors and capacitors of the circuit of this museum amp? especially the input circuit, tone stack? I would like to build a champ amp with those values, combined with the Specs of a champ... Thank you!

    Jimi's tone on Voodoo Chile at around the 4:30 mark is my all-time favorite electric guitar tone. AWESOME though your tone is here, it ain't quite that. Jimi's on VC was more sustaining, liquidy, the amp(s) cranked to the point like they're about to explode and those huge 4x12 Plexi cabs had way more of that classic Marshall midrange grunt, just nasty but utterly beautiful and 3-dimensional, liquid at the same time.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, not bad for a little 4 x 10" amp. I think the KT66 and EL34 power tubes and the 12" Celestion speakers in a closed cabinet make a big difference.

    • @primeDecomposition
      @primeDecomposition 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have some AWESOME gear sir; have you ever entertained the thought of getting a 60's Plexi or boutique recreation of one (AND a good attenuator to go with it too haha)? Ya know, take that final step towards Jimi's sound.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have definitely considered it but now that I am unemployed, I need to be practical. Unless I am going to put the equipment to good use, I can't justify purchasing any more. I would want an original Marshall and I am not sure how difficult they are to maintain and get back to their original status. I understand Fenders pretty well but Marshalls would be a whole new learning process.

    • @primeDecomposition
      @primeDecomposition 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well my hats off to anyone who has the means to acquire one of these original amps from the 50's/60's, I'm super jealous lol. The current reissues that Fender makes, idk, the Blackface amps sound decent, they're at least in the same ballpark from what I hear, but the Tweeds don't sound anywhere near the originals to me.
      I'll listen to demos on youtube, the reissue Bassmans always sound sterile and lifeless, whereas YOU'RE original Bassmans sound downright magical, like living breathing organic creatures, it's such an inspiring sound, I'd LOVE to own one one day. Probably a boutique recreation is the closest I'll get.

      Yes, they are difficult to duplicate for some reason. They just don't make all of the parts like they used to especially the tubes and transformers. Even the wood in the cabinets was better back then, very light and resonant.

    WOW! Awesome. and I don't think I've ever seen anyone play Hendrix with a thumbpick before ! :-)

    • @millstap
      @millstap  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Thumb picks are pretty useful. Put it on your thumb but then hold it like a regular pick. You can't drop them at a gig. I stopped using them though because it caused my index finger nail to rub on the strings and get real thin. You have to find one that is comfortable on your thumb. My favorite for tone is the Fred Kelly Slick Pick made of polycarbonate and not the Delrin one. Another comfortable one I just recently tried is the Golden Gate Ivroid thumb pick. There a many out there. I just noticed the Red Bear thumb pick. I may try one of those. The disadvantage is they are more expensive so you need one that will last a long time.

    You tremolo is probably based around a booster, that is connected to a circuit wich controls the output volume based on a signal from an oscillator. This is basically what a tremolo pedal is.
    Hendrix loved to use a fuzz face as a booster, keeping the guitar's volume down, so petty much all of the distortion was comming from the amp and not the pedal.

    @M16Tman I see the TAN is selling the kit with speakers and cabinet for $600. You won't regret it. I use mine to drive my Leslie too. It has a lot of sound for 10 watts. You should consider investing a little money in some good vintage tubes for it. They could cost another $100 or so.

    I read that Hendrix did many of his recordings on a bassman, from the sounds here it seems very plausible.

      @millstap  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank makes sense. I remember when I did my first Hendrix video on this amp back in 2011 and I said "boy that sounds a lot like Hendrix's tone." He did use a lot of different Fender amps over the years.

      Everyone raves about that marshall "plexi" tone. Yet from what I can tell, loads of guys used it solely for the volume for big arenas. And everytime I listen to one, I am not so impressed by the sound and often favor the sound of Vox and fender. Then come to find out guys like Peter Townsend and Ritchie Blackmore didn't like the sound of marshall either and only used it as necessary. Then I find out that along with Blackmore, guys like Joe Perry recorded with Vox and to this day buy boutique amps meant to emulate a Vox crunch.

    Another good choice. I have never owned a Peavy but they make great equipment. I watched a few videos on TH-cam and they sound great. It is probably pretty similar to the Blues Jr.

    @millstap -infact that was my #1 choice, im currently looking at a '67 Super for $1800 but only 3 of the speakers are original...how would something like that compare to your mint condition 64?

  • @millstap
    @millstap  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @1954telecaster That's perfect. Speakers are easy. They make a bunch of good ones nowadays. I have a mixture in my '64 Super Reverb. Weber recommends AlNiCos on the bottom and ceramics on the top. If you don't lie the one odd speaker, you could put two Eminence Legend 1028K's or even the Jensens are good but need to broken in for several months of hard playing. What are the original speakers? I find the later years did not have the best speakers. The ceramics are a little louder.

    Regarding the bias, if you set the main voltage to 110v, the anode voltage will drop from 425V to 400V. This will cause the anode current to decrease. However, since the bias voltage will also decrease, the current will tend to return to its initial value. This is why it’s not recommended to stabilize only the anode voltage or only the bias voltage. Instead, you should either stabilize both or leave both unstabilized, allowing the valve’s operating point to "self-settle" when the main voltage fluctuates.

    @M16Tman Actually, you could build it for around $750. It's a great amp and you would have the pride of knowing you built such a great sounding amp. The directions are in Dave Hunter's "Guitar Amplifier Handbook." It is called a 2 Stroke Amp. You can get the kit minus the cabinet at the tubeampnetwork website. I bought my cabinet from Weber VST. I have videos of the build on TH-cam. I think that would be perfect. You can build it in a weekend if you have all the parts. It rocks.

    They are nice to have but not absolutely necessary. If you can check the voltages on the amp when running on today's 120+ volts and they are within specs., then you are okay. I only use it on my Tweed amps because they were designed on the 110v current of the late 1950's so I like to keep them a little lower just for piece of mind.

    Hey man!! Incredible playing!! Amazing vibrato, lots of feel into our playing!! Love the sound a lot!! I'm searching for a good blues-amp, a combo... Price is not important... I'm in doubt between several amps... A new Fender bassman, a Tweed Bassman clone from Flynn-amps (handwired), a Tweed Twin clone (handw, from Flynn), a Tweed Deluxe (handw, from Flynn), a Tweed Pro (handw, from Flynn) or a Vox AC30 Handwired or not handwired with Alnico Blue-speakers. What do u think? Or other suggestions?

    @M16Tman TH-cam limits the comment length. I play 4 hours a day easily. I don't watch much TV. Learn your minor and major pentatonic scales in every position and work on moving between the positions smoothly. After a while, your muscle memory will just know where to go but if you stick with just one or two positions, you will get into a rut. I did that for years. Hendrix knew the neck like the back of his hand. Learn to copy some of your favorite licks to give you ideas on how to move.

    Don't get me wrong, that bassman is dead on, but I think that your strobe tuner is adding to the voodoo Magick! To my ears, you're tuning your guitar to Jimmie's in the album and getting that sweeter tone from the tuning.

    Grey or black bobbin pickups? Clay dot? I've got a black 64. Neck dates to Feb 64, pots to 63, and pickups are black bobbin May 1964. They sound very similar. 63 / early 64 is the epitome of the Strat IMO.
