Heikki Mikkola was one of my favorites in the Motocross World. I met him at the 1974 Trans-AMA in Atlanta. He was a great competitor. I raced a 250 Husqvarna and a 360 Bultaco Pursang, and at the :57 seconds mark in this video, it shows someone on a 360 Bultaco Pursang which is not Heikki Mikkola! I don't believe he ever raced a Bultaco!

I loved watching Heikki and DeCoster bang handlebars at Mid Ohio race track. Heikki had a unique style that made him seem superhuman.

Must be referring to the "Trans-Ama" series which was the opportunity for all of us YOUNG motocross fans and racers of that era a chance to see our heroes from Europe up close and personal....open face helmets, jofa's, Carrera 98 goggles, hallman leathers, visors, and chest protectors were the dress code of those magical years.....sure miss those days, and moments

Heikki was nicknamed "The Flying Fin" and I met him at Carlsbad Raceway. They were all nice guys back then.

He was great. I was a huge Roger fan and I hated knowing Heikki was lining up on the same gate as Roger. Not many could beat Roger back then but there was never any doubt that Heikki could at any moment.

I was watching the Finnish Championships at Finland, and Mikkola was one of the riders. He had win the World Championship already, so he was driving mostly just for fun. There were 6 starts, 2 x 125 cc 2 x 250 cc and 2 x 500cc. Mikkola win all starts by more than one lap ahead of the driver who became second. Six starts, only minutes to rest between the starts..and win all of them. In those days, these guys were men, not flower stalks..

Although this matter could be argued until everyone on the thread becomes ill, Mikkola rode the hell out of a bike back when they where built like battleships. I mean, think about it, straight forks and two shocks in the rear!! I recall the first time I got to put some hours an a YZ with a "mono shock" in the rear, and that was like night and day compared to the old-school Huskies and Suzukis that were ridden by guys like Mikkola and DeCoster. Regardless, I recall when Bob Hannah announced to the world that he was going to Europe to slaughter Mikkola in the 500cc GP class...and, guess what? Mikkola blew his doors in. After that, even Hannah was a believer. If Mikkola hadn't have seriously injured a leg back in about '79, who knows what else he might have accomplished. Like it or not, Heikki Mikkola was one really fast outdoor MX rider -- and he came to the US to prove it.
