    I have to comment. I enjoyed this too. I was born in 1961, so I am in the middle between your dad and maybe Caroline and Ben. You are just good people! Answering questions which trigger memories and there were good times had at 24 Susex as children there. All of you have an equal and wonderful sense of humour. You all had to have been wonderful friends, and would have attracted wonderful friends. Your mom was 14 years younger than your dad and yet they seemed to have certainly been meant for each other. It is March 2024. My condolences about the passing of your dad. This is a major loss for you all. You can be proud of your mom and dad, but they can also be proud of you four as well. What goes around comes around. You will likely be fine with your own families and carry onwards. It will take some time though. He will be missed. This has happened to me already. If you are reading, and if not, Take Care!

    • @barneybowler4695
      @barneybowler4695 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Hal Hal Am I in a time machine? Is it 1996? The Free Trade deal that Mulroney struck was the reason for the prosperity that Canada had through the 1990's and into the 2000's Chretien's Liberals liked it so much that they expanded it to include Mexico entering into NAFTA. Class should be an important characteristic of leaders in a civilized society. I assume you are referring to the dignity of having a job? I lost my job more than once as the recent recession moved through different sectors. I had to start my own business and move to make ends meet. So I know a little bit about dignity and humility.

    • @edwardcurtisbennett3888
      @edwardcurtisbennett3888 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know right, the left's fixation over Mulroney signing the FTA makes zero sense. News flash- the Liberals were in power for 13 years after Mulroney and they never repealed free trade. Come to think of it, what major Mulroney policies did the Liberals even change? NAFTA and the GST remained intact, the NEP was never brought back, Air Canada remained private, the EPA wasn't repealed, etc.

    • @edwardcurtisbennett3888
      @edwardcurtisbennett3888 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Regardless, the notion that Mulroney sold Canadian jobs to the states is bullshit. Canadian exports to the States have tripled, and I don't see how exporting more to the biggest economy in the world kills jobs. Imports have also tripled, driving down consumer prices. Trade liberalization played a big part in cutting Trudeau senior's massive debt (and no, Mulroney didn't increase deficits. When adjusted for inflation, he cut the deficit by $20B).

    When On the Take came out in 1994, it made author Stevie Cameron a household name in Canada. Her book's revelations about the rampant corruption and petty greed of Brian Mulroney's decade in the prime minister's office reverberated for many years in the Canadian political landscape and helped destroy his Progressive Conservative Party. (The party, one of Canada's most venerable, never recovered from Mulroney's stewardship and eventually merged with the Canadian Alliance Party.) Cameron, one of the country’s leading investigative reporters, was one of the few reporters to consistently question and probe the corruption of the Mulroney years. She has a wonderful ear for storytelling, which helps make On the Take a page-turner. Cameron seems to rejoice in recounting the numerous unseemly episodes of the Mulroney administration and depicting all its seedy characters and hangers-on. Mulroney comes across as having been most comfortable in a powerbroker's backrooms, surrounding himself with dodgy bagmen and devious lobbyists. Cameron suggests that the country was "open for business," with a "for sale" sign on the front lawn. She writes that even in their final official act, as the Mulroneys departed from office in disgrace amid record-low popularity ratings, they tried to stiff taxpayers into buying their used furniture.
    If On the Take can be faulted, it's because it feels a tad partisan. The implication seems to be that Mulroney was somehow much worse than other Canadian leaders--when, in fact, the subsequent regime of Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was also marred by many corruption scandals. Cameron does a fine job of exposing Mulroney, but she seems to blame corruption too much on personality rather than any deeper, systemic causes. That said, On the Take is still a classic of Canadian nonfiction and a masterful depiction of how power is wielded in Ottawa. --Alex Roslin

    I think it should be investigated if the state now and then is legislated with the Bible written as a story. The word immunity (Latin immunitas, freedom from obligations to the state) comes from a religious revelation from the middle ages, most likely from a pope to become lawless, and which has since been rewritten into full immunity to the queen, personal and functional immunity (legally, cannot be prosecuted for criminal act) to the prime minister, government, parliament, cabinet, and Supreme Court for law decisions and actions. I also think it should be investigated if millions of fallen soldiers in the world wars were elected by the people or not. The political exploitation of the vital ecosystem has now led to forest death (force majeure) how will it affect people's economy, etc?
    I think the Democrat Party can be a consciously misleading party name with all parties belonging to the Conservative Party, as current political democracy and socialism can only be about going more toward the middle, eg. social democrats. The reason may be that the queen (head of state) wants to govern the people with full immunity together with the prime minister, government, parliament, cabinet, and Supreme Court with functional immunity, personal immunity for law decisions and actions, even with the misleading word professional politician.
    I think the people should consider voting for a real democratic party with an independent state formation to investigate if the queen, prime minister, government, parliament, cabinet, and Supreme Court overall may be guilty of a violation of democratic rights with misleading elections, economic crimes, violation of human rights with class society for adults and children, serious environmental crime (force majeure).
