  • Here we have the show from September 17, 1955 complete with commercials. The video is not the best probably because this is live from Chicago's Aragon Ballroom. It improves as the show goes on. The audio is good and it's easy to get lost in the fun. Definitely worth checking out. A highlight is everyone introduces themselves starting at about the 7:20 point.

This is remarkable to see. I remember my mother calling me into the house to see the Welk show for the first time earlier that year. Mom and Dad were big fans of Wek when he played the area ballrooms in the 1930s and 40s. In 55 I was t beginning Hammond organ lessons. By 1963 I was performing professionally in the combo at a legendary area supper club and I've been involved me music ever since. Lawrence Welk had a terrific ensemble of entertainers. It always bothers me we people make fun of him. He laughed all the way to the bank.

It still amazes me that after all these years we can enjoy fabulous music. But also very sad to know that no one in this episode are still living

Watching this video is kinda like going back in time with the time machine. It’s the closest we got to a time machine these videos I enjoy them mmensely.

These folks would be in their 90s if they were alive, but I bet they would say how much they loved their work.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Lawrence Welk used to say all the time. Vundaba in German he had a very pronounced German accent but he was a lot of fun and loved to dance. Great show I remember him well real Gentleman.

And here I thought it was the arrogant ballroom all these years... Surely not with Larry, the humblest of all maestros.

It came on ABC. I understood that it came live from Santa Monica, CA. May have come from both places

The show was on the network. Not sure where the kine itself was recorded either at the network master control or locally in Chicago. Not sure how the live shows were distributed to the affiliates. Direct over the AT&T lines or delayed until the station got a kinescope copy?? Fascinating stuff. I'm always open to be educated. lol

What cracks me up the most about this is that the beloved Alice Lon was fired by L. W. because she SHOWED TOO MUCH KNEE on one of the shows - RIDICULOUS, but, that's how L. W. was - extremely prim and proper to the very end!

I love Alice. She wore those beautiful gowns and dresses loaded with tons of petticoats common at the time that swirled so beautifully when she danced with Mr. Welk. Yes, a sad sate of affairs regarding the firing, but she was there for several years so we have plenty of shows. Due to viewer protests he tried to get her back but was unsuccessful.

Sad that she died when she was 54. So young.
