I used to be all in for digital, but when Sony started pulling purchased movies for their customers, I switched to physical discs for everything. That said, most games these days are just a an access code to stuff you need to download from their servers, so it feels like we’re screwed either way
We're better off w/ physical still, because in like 99% of cases, you can access the game if you have the physical disc unless it's an online-only or online-required game. Physical isn't perfect, but it's better than trusting them at this point.
INCORRECT. In the vast majority of cases, at least 95%, the full game is on the DISC. I've been in a situation in recent years where I lived in an area with extremely crappy internet and had to play almost all my PS5 disc games offline (no updates / no patches, I own 144 PS5 games on disc, 20 of those 144 being PSVR2 disc games) and with the overwhelming vast majority of them the full game was on the disc. In other words, in the vast majority of cases on PS5, the disc is NOT an "access code". Please stop spreading misinformation as it causes a lot of problems.
but when most of the time the disc is just a serial in a box with some outdated version of the game that you might as well just download anyway when the update is about the same size as the game. I think discs are done. Just get over it because they aren't coming back and while holding a physical copy of something makes you feel you own that. You still only own a licence whether its on a disc or online. We lost the format wars I'm afraid. Consumers gave up all the power to sell/trade/own their media for convenience. I gave up on discs on my own PC decades ago so I'm impressed consoles have hung on for so long. Time to let go.
The disc now also act as license to play the game. Most modern games require you to download and install the games when the console detect the license from disc.
I haven’t bought a physical game in more than 15 years. All my PC games, Xbox series X games, Xbox one games, Switch games, and PS4 games were digital purchases. I’ve collected video games and video game consoles since the 1980s. At one point I had 15 video game systems and hundreds of games. It takes up too much space and it’s inconvenient. How often do YOU go back and replay games you bought 20 years ago? Digital games are WAY easier to manage.
@zero11010 you can't resell your digital games. That's why physical is better, I ended up deleting my steam account. Would have sold it if there was a legal safe way to do it
Disc drives are needed to prevent companies from shafting us on prices for content, but also because when you buy games online you don't "own them" (it's a license) and if we move to an all-digital future, companies will put games online then remove/edit them AND memory will cost way more under the guise of "inflation" than the offset used games provide. DO NOT let them rip you off. DO NOT pay for their disc consoles. VOTE WITH your wallets at ALL TIMES.
I have just ordered a digital version! really don’t have any use for a drive on it. The console itself is sited in the loft so it’s out the way to keep my room super clean
If you don't use a disk drive for games anymore, it's very useful for Blu Ray movies, because having the movie on disk means OWNING it, instead of being allowed to watch it as long as it is online....
I already have a DVD Player... and no Xbox disc games nor Blu-Rays, so it wouldn't be any extra value for people like me. Nice that Microsoft gives consumers a choice!
My opinion on disk drives in consoles is in the minority: I've gone mostly digital when it comes to media. I used to own LARGE collections of physical media. But after several moves and a fire that destroyed one home, I've been digital for over 10 years now with no regrets. Not everyone wants to manage huge collections of physical media. There are downsides, two of which I just mentioned. So, I may just get the all digital X Box Series X.Though it's good that the disk drive version remains for those who prefer it.

If you understand how modern games are developed and how they work on modern consoles, you'd know that it's not a stupid question. PC players began ditching disc drives 20 years ago. Because we know that the data contained on said discs is, more often than not, useless. 20 years from today, if you want to revisit Cyberpunk 2077 for example, are you going to want to play what was pressed onto discs? Of course not. Because it's an unfinished game on that disc. You need the eleventy hundred patches and updates to have a functional product.
@@Angultra They're trying to reduce cost/increase profits. Removing the drive helps with that. Undoing that by engineering then mass producing a new chassis would not be ideal. Console hardware is not a moneymaker. Getting you in to start buying games or paying for game pass is the moneymaker
I am happy for the option to NOT have a disc drive anymore. Even my Xbox One's disk drive was collecting dust for years. I can't even remember the last time I bought a physical game or blu-ray movie. The $50 cost saving would be much more useful applied to a half year of Game Pass than the disc drive, especially for new gamers.
I have moved on to all digital future, only real reason I do not like to hoard discs, I don’t have the intention to sell or upload. I just stick with what I have, and there shouldn’t be a license to play games ie subscription models such as Xbox game pass. But I’m not complaining.
I plan to get the white xbox series x digital version on November 1st for my early birthday because November 3 is my birthday so I plan to get it 2 days before my 31st birthday
The option should always be there for those who want to own their games. I personally don't replay games, so it is fine for me, but I understand how all digital is bad
It's always good for consoles to have disc/game card slots, but most people don't care about owning games anymore. The series x digital still gonna sell well.
I own a digital PS5 slim, launch disc drive PS5 and a 1TB series S (black). I traditionally like physical disc drives and physical copies of games. But this year I preordered all my usual games digitally (2K25, Madden 25, awaiting COD on game pass). Im starting to get use to digital more than I would like. Probably has something to do with me being in school and being able to predownload the game while in class so it's ready for me to play once I get home. This probably sounds small to most people but I hardly have time to get groceries....so making it to my local GameStop to grab my games is asking a lot right now. I'm still pro disc drive and physical games. Both Sony and Microsoft providing options for both is dope and as of now digital works for me.
That external disc drive makes the console more than a console with disc drive. So just get the console with disc drive. The love affair these outlets have for Sony needs to be studied.
It doesn't need disk drive to play game anymore, same as you don't need disk drive to listen music, same as you don't need tv to watch video content, same as you don't need horse to travel.
To all digital fans remember this started when they started removing licensed music from GTA-SA. That’s just the beginning. Then they took away Daytona USA off Xbox and PS stores. Then they shut down the 360 store. Welcome to the all digital world where non-game preservation and “re-nonmasters” are the norm.
Just purchased i only do digital i will never lose my stuff, im so happy im getting it today, especially the tv I have maxes out the 4k to 120 hertz thank you ❤
It’s a lot more than 5% of consumers in the gaming market that still want disk drives. The movie/ TV market may be around that number but game preservation and backwards compatibility is a big market of game consumers. Having the disk drive is still highly desired.
So many people around the would still have trouble with internet access and even if they don’t you will be surprised that there are countries with banks that don’t support online banking or any other services like pay pall so being able to buy a disk is the only way for some people
Disk drive should be a standard item in the box!!!!!!!, not everyone have easy access to internet to download up to 150gb of game each time you feel like playing
My question is as a current series x owner, What benefits other than color options do i get in comparison to the new model? Any hardware or software upgrades ?
I love people whining about the end of physical copies for games or movies... Guys ... Guys !!! Don't you watch Netflix ? Don't you listen to your music with Deezer ? Live like you should in the 21th century !! Sorry but the good old time of the NES, SNES , Megadrive or Playstation is gone. You can't rent games anymore and you don't own your digital games... That's how the world is spinning nowadays.
I agree. Many of the people complaining that a console "needs" a disc drive are the same ones who cried pools of tears when consoles started to require an internet connection. Times change. All you have to do is walk into any GameStop to see that physical games are practically dead.
@@TomO-nx1bd I live in France and it's the same problem : Micromania (it belongs to GameStop now..) sold more and more goodies like Pop Funko and this shelf is getting bigger and bigger every year .. I don't know the situation in USA with GameStop but when you sell your physical games, here in France, you barely have... few euros and used games are nearly the same price as new games. One other reason why I don't go there anymore : for security purpose (trouble with thieves) all NEW physical games are open and games are taking away.... Some of my friends love to go to Micromania, like a "pilgrimage"...But you never know if you really buy a new game or... a used game in "very good condition". If you're a casual player and you're out to play that one game that you know you're going to really invest into then sure. But honestly you got to have full ownership of your games. A physical copy is just better.
Physical games make no sense these days. They're not like DVDs where the media is stored on the disk, it's just an access key that makes you download the game anyway. Current Bluray discs can only hold 25GB-50GB, while most AAA games these days are 100GB+.
I don't have friends to get spare games from. I also rarely watch movies or anything that's on a Blu-ray or anything when you can just install TH-cam. I'm afraid All digital is the way to go for most consoles.
Just let your friends add you as their home console and vice versa. I thought this was common knowledge. You can change the option once a year if you want to switch.
If only they added an nvme slot and a type c port 😮 instead of those crappy expensive proprietary storage cards they removed the disc drive but they don't add qol changes to the hardware
They definitely need a disc drive so we can contine go play our games when servers or Internet goes down. PlayStation's biggest issues is cannot check license without internet.
I love playing digitally on my playstation 5 & xbox series x because I ran out of space on my gaming shelf plus it’s very convenient not worrying about games being sold out in stores. I’ve never touched the optical drive. Every game I got for my Xbox one was digital. Every game I got for my PS4 was digital. I’m an adult. I don’t trade games with friends.
I mean they might as well put it, since the case is exactly the same size. All digital should at least shrink it
@@Angultra They're trying to reduce cost/increase profits. Removing the drive helps with that. Undoing that by engineering then mass producing a new chassis would not be ideal. Console hardware is not a moneymaker. Getting you in to start buying games or paying for game pass is the moneymaker
Answers it with an even more stupider Answer. 🤣🤣
I can't remember the last time I used my disc drive... it's weird to see where gaming went in that subject
That shining circle thing. Forgot when is the last time I ever held that thing.
I've got ps5 slim with disc drive so don't mind get a digital xbox version. Looks cool
With the existence of Steam and digital services that don’t go down, consoles 100% disc media, otherwise they aren’t worth it and I’m not chancing it
He said NEW robot white Xbox Series but at 0:59 they marked it on the screen a 2014 Xbox. 🤦🏻♂️
Absolutely buffoon status of the editors
I’m buying heaps of hard to find Xbox discs from $1 -$20 and will hang on to these when game pass gets too expensive
I have the disc version and I've used it like 3 times in the last 4 years
I own a digital PS5 slim, launch disc drive PS5 and a 1TB series S (black).
XBOX💚
This guy.. pay the extra $50 😂 he clearly isn't suffering from inflation huh.
That external disc drive makes the console more than a console with disc drive. So just get the console with disc drive. The love affair these outlets have for Sony needs to be studied.
I can't remember the last time i used a disc (which is a use license too. Just read the EULAs)
0:58 xbox x all digital came out in 2014? lol
Just ordered mine for $400 ,such a steal
It will hit the physical used video games market?
Can you add an external disk drive?
It doesn't need disk drive to play game anymore, same as you don't need disk drive to listen music, same as you don't need tv to watch video content, same as you don't need horse to travel.
Hopefully the ssd is upgradable because 1 terabyte is not enough if it’s all digital
expansion card is the only way for Xbox lol
To all digital fans remember this started when they started removing licensed music from GTA-SA. That’s just the beginning. Then they took away Daytona USA off Xbox and PS stores. Then they shut down the 360 store. Welcome to the all digital world where non-game preservation and “re-nonmasters” are the norm.
Just purchased i only do digital i will never lose my stuff, im so happy im getting it today, especially the tv I have maxes out the 4k to 120 hertz thank you ❤
No mention of the new Xbox having Bluetooth for a headset....any headset? Thought I heard that this was a thing?
Even the discs are just keys. Only a few games actually have data on them. That goes for Microsoft AND Sony
Do they NEED them? Not at all but absolutely make it available to the 5% of consumers who still want a disc drive.
Those 5% also complain about a $200 add-on.
It’s more than 5%
Just noticed it's should say 2024, not 2014.
Cloud gaming is the future, I'd say save your money and get a good wifi setup and game pass ultimate.
Me, I don't have time to go there (we all have a life and a job... ).
I'm pretty sure that in 10 /15 years, we will buy our consoles through internet order sales and play games with a server (at least for big cities, of course).
@@TomO-nx1bdyou are so ignorant it’s so funny
@@twin10broter ignorant people are people like you're doing who simply call somebody ignorant without actually coming back with their own argument
At 0.59 no1 caught that 2014 instead of 2024
The top of that All Digital Series X gives me Junji Ito vibes.
If you're a casual player and you're out to play that one game that you know you're going to really invest into then sure. But honestly you got to have full ownership of your games. A physical copy is just better.
So no performance upgrade to keep up with the PS5 Pro?
I didn’t even know my Series X had a drive 😂
😂
💀😂
Can't wait for the 2tb version my xss with 512gb was way too small
Do a Gameplay video comepare it to original xbox series x see which one is faster
Physical games make no sense these days. They're not like DVDs where the media is stored on the disk, it's just an access key that makes you download the game anyway. Current Bluray discs can only hold 25GB-50GB, while most AAA games these days are 100GB+.
Discs for life!!!
I don't have friends to get spare games from.
I also rarely watch movies or anything that's on a Blu-ray or anything when you can just install TH-cam.
I'm afraid All digital is the way to go for most consoles.
Grabbed my Series X back in 2022 brand new for $360. (Holy price imo lol)
Best Buy has them for 399.99 which in my opinion should be the everyday price
Disk drives! How else can you legally share games you've purchased? 🏆
Just let your friends add you as their home console and vice versa. I thought this was common knowledge. You can change the option once a year if you want to switch.
@@lilmario0... Until they remove it as an option, like Netflix. 🤷♂️
We need a Disc Drive for Blu-ray 💿 Movies
yeah i just download the 4k movies free and play it on the xbox X white monster
If only they added an nvme slot and a type c port 😮 instead of those crappy expensive proprietary storage cards they removed the disc drive but they don't add qol changes to the hardware
They definitely need a disc drive so we can contine go play our games when servers or Internet goes down. PlayStation's biggest issues is cannot check license without internet.
They got it wrong. Xbox did not release the Xbox series x all digital in 2014.
I love playing digitally on my playstation 5 & xbox series x because I ran out of space on my gaming shelf plus it’s very convenient not worrying about games being sold out in stores. I rather have a disc drive console because a lot of games get delisted digitally so I buy xbox 360 games physically. I like to have both options i’m enjoying xbox 360 forza horizon I got it on amazon for $40 used mint condition no scratches plays brand new which was really surprising side note i’ll never buy an all digital console don’t limit yourself.🥂✌🏾😎
Won’t get one without a disk drive I also watch blue rays, etc… on my series x with a disk drive.
Do Consoles Need a Disc Drive? YES, especially when a console is sold to have backwards capabilities or is used as a media centre
I’m pro digital but I agree with the whole licensing thing.
I've had my Series X from launch. I have no idea if the disc drive works 😂.
Why in the world would I want to add a disc drive to my console? That's just stupid. That makes no SENSE what so ever.
Microsoft should partner with the biggest PC case company to make the next Xbox.
Yes.
You wont be able to watch 4k movies in discs.
Too bad you can't link consoles for extra GPU power 😢
How Am I going to play games when I don't have internet
hey thanks man
I haven’t bought a PC game outside of digital purchases in more than 15 years.
Every switch game I own is digital. Not a single physical game.
Every single game for my Xbox series X is digital. I’ve never touched the optical drive.
Every game I got for my Xbox one was digital.
Every game I got for my PS4 was digital.
I’m an adult. I don’t trade games with friends. When we identify a game we want to play together we all just buy the game.
@@zero11010 I used to take all the games to GameStop and trade them and my next game was free
@@davidhamid8025 which puts WAY more money in the pocket of GameStop than your own. If they buy a game from you for $2 (one that you paid $60 for) they sell it for $10. If you sell it yourself on Craigslist or Facebook or whatever, you’ll get a much better price. Plus, they make even more on you because when you buy the game from them … they spent 45 to buy it from their distributor (or whatever) then they sell to you for $60.
People like you are how they actually stay in business. They make a lot of money from that system.
So, you can be taken advantage of by GameStop, or jump through hoops to get 2x-5x the value on the games.
If you go that route … buy the day it comes out, sell within a month of it coming out. You’ll get close to full value if you sell to a person rather than GameStop.
But, I don’t resell games. And, wouldn’t even if it was an option (since it’s all digital now). I’d rather give them to someone who I thought would enjoy it.
@@davidhamid8025 You made gamestop a LOT of money by doing that.
2014 is crazy
Disc drive or bust. Never all-digital for console
Decided to leave gaming this year. Too expensive all and all and I want to own the things that I buy.
yes... it needs a disc. look I'm all for easy digital on my PC, but! you can't let physical media die. that's just not right
I know Xbox is still going to use physical media because they made the galaxy black series x with a disc drive
So i have a digital xbox series. Yes i believe they absolutely need a disc drive because microsoft is the only place you can buy games and they.keep the proces super high most of the time
Tbh this is more worth it than the Series S.
All digital ✌️
Why on Earth is it still that large?
If the xbox series x was $399 i would be a 100% buy on the spot they need to knock $50 more off imo and as for do consoles need cd drives the answer is no they dont people are just to paranoid about that.....i have been a pc gamer for 10 years since my last console died.
consoles arnt meant to last forever i have been a pc gamer for the last 10 years upgrading my parts i have had to many times where my consoles dies 5 years later but i have had my pc on 100% of the time since i switched.
when you switch to pc and see how much you dont need a cd drive you wouldnt care about it anymore pc gamers just need more storage..lol
Yes. Next!
A 4 min video on the same console with no disc drive and more storage 😢
1:00
The all digital series x was released in 2014? 😂
