store bought would be fine, but digging yard soil can contain various pathogens and or ants etc. Just less risk for the birds to use hay, straw or pine.
it showed in the video but the hinges are two pipe clamps. as for the floor the "bottom" of the barrel is round so I place pine straw to level it out. you can use any bedding material you want, straw, old hay, grass clipping etc. Been using the pens here in Georgia for a little while now and they have been working great.
Basically cut a square hole on the top and bottom of the barrels. I used the wire shelving you can get at lowes or hope depot as the doors as they are very sturdy. put inside the bedding of your choice and you are good to go.
What do you do about nesting boxes ? Any ideas for fitting externally ? Thanks in advance !
Why didn't you use dirt or sand on bottom? Then pine or straw. Pros cons? Thanks

Cut out some of the bottom, make a floor with wire and wood framed out and slide it in, waste falls out, no mess
how do you make the floor flat and what do you make the hinges out of

remove the front lid that pops off and dump the barrel. (make sure the birds are out first).
Looks like they would make great grow out cages for the Roos till you butcher them
it's a good idea but you don't explain how you are doing it
