In the late 1950's small nukes tethered to high altitude balloons were tested. No worries, the detonation would be too high to cause damage like Hiroshima. However, a lot of worries because the ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) was actually the weapon. An EMP from a high-altitude detonation could wipe out electronics in an area from New York to Richmond. Cars, gas pumps, generators, electrical grids, pumping stations, stock exchange and banking computers, mass transit, radio, TV and internet services and much more could suddenly stop working. I believe these balloons were intended to intimidate and let us know they (our enemies) can accomplish this. The balloons are bright white on purpose and very visible. A "spy balloon" would be a little stealthier. Thank God if they are only for spying.
All they had to is fire a single 50 caliber round through the helium filled portion. Then let the craft drift slowly to earth; the all the evidence would be left intact with no damage (to either person's or property).
@Piano Man42. A single .50 cal wouldn't have worked. A Canadian jet shot down a weather balloon using its gun and several THOUSAND rounds. It also took several days to fall to the ground. All those rounds could have killed or injured somebody on the ground. Do you want to be responsible?
@@slimjimnyc270 There had to be someway to do it; where it would come down intact. How about slashing a hole in it with the razor rocket; aka hellfire? Blowing it up is not the answer.

The AGM-114R9X Hellfire is a laser-guided AIR-to-GROUND missile. It's not designed to hit airborne targets like a balloon. And a targeting laser might not even work on a semi-transparent balloon surface.
Ok, first, the F22 had to fly supersonic due to the 55,000 ft ceiling and air is thin. second, at that speed the jet is faster than the bullets they fire and good chance the bullet will hit the jet (it happened before), third the balloon is at equalized pressure so it won't pop but vent very slowly drifting away. very slowly, probably days and then it might fall in the middle of the Atlantic ocean or end up in Europe.

I’m not worried because president Biden said earlier that China is not a problem.
China is not the problem. The problem is CCP nefarious dictatorship destroying real China from within.
That’s bc he’s in their back pocket and will be protected underground if we’re attacked on our own soil. It’s the public “little guys” like us that will suffer, not him.
We learned everything China was okay with us knowing about their capabilities. Maybe they only sent what they didn't mind getting caught with.
Before it passes south Carolina?
Strange has they have drones like birds... just a thought.🤔
I was in my speedo catchin some rays when this round thing was takin pichers
Chinese energy giant, ENN Energy Group, to build a $5 billion solar farm, spy station and panel manufacturing plant in the southern Nevada desert
@@randyclar747 Blowing up the balloon was, unfortunately, probably the best choice. The Air Force had several days to go through various scenarios to pick the best one.

Why not say no comment? The story isn't believable

Um ! South Carolina...
The Russians knew it was up there and over thier air space before entering our airspace.
They are working together. What’s your point. You know they are Allies right
@@gold_ram_5.780 yes, such good allies that when Putein asked for help in Ukraine war, China says no thanks. (also no tanks).
I think that, America has no control over its skies anymore, and if this happens, it will be the beginning of the end of American hegemony.
Even when Russia launched Sputnik, US citizens was already thinking that. What changed? Did everyone forgot? Control the skies? What about the 204,405 aircraft over US at any one time? In case you forgot, US is so wide that there are 3 timezones, so how would you even say no control?
Everything, that’s what.
中国已经出发去救援土耳其美国人却还在这里纠结他们的气球😅
Why risk floating a balloon when you could easily have people come over and spy on shit
They probably already got ppl on US ground in those states that it flew past.

Now it's real.
Let's see what the used is capable of.⚪🤗⚪

There probing for air defense locations
and CNN helps by showing the path of the balloon and the senators tells everyone in the world where the "sensitive missile silos" are located. Good job of hiding locations.
Collect transmission signatures for ICBM and other medium range missiles to lock on
Areostar balloon, made in USA?
China did us a great favor in exposing the cowardice & stupidity of our current administration & military that is supposed to be protecting us against this kind of threat. Consider what China would have done under the same circumstances. I rest my case!!
