In the 1950s the US had a similar project at the White House. It's interior was gutted after years of deferred maintenance. It was during the terms of President Harry Truman. His family spent most of his second term living in the Blair House which is across the street from The White House.
During that project, almost all the original fittings ended up in a landfill and replaced by cheaper reproductions, as a result of project being sped up to be finished by the end of the presidents time in office.
Its a shame the original fittings were destroyed in the White House. I wish they had just removed the fittings for the work and reinstalled them post rebuilding.
