    We drove to Florida (~24 hours) several times, in a van, with five adults and four dogs. 😅 Three of our babies have passed since our last vacation, and things will definitely feel different this time around. Traveling with all four of them was crazy, but I’ll cherish those memories forever. ❤️ Thank you for this video!

    Last year, 8 days and 2000 miles with my black lab, Tanner. 4 hours per day. And 6 hours the last day. We stopped at tennis courts every few hours to play fetch or walks. He loved the seat hammock in the back seat of the truck. He loved the hotel rooms too, and getting spoiled. It wasn't easy, but it was much better than shipping him on a plane. I have 2 dogs now. Not sure how that will work. 😁

    Thanks for the reminders!
    We’ve always taken our two Aussies with us on vacation, but we haven’t gone the last two years due to Covid restrictions. I want to make sure I don’t forget anything that will ensure they have a safe and comfortable ride. We usually travel from Michigan to Florida or Texas. So they’ll be riding 8-10 hours for two days. We always plan on spending the first day tiring them out again before leaving them crated in our room as we head out on the second day for alone time, doing activities that aren’t dog friendly. Then alternate days with and without the dogs, ending with a long day of tiring them out on our last day. I can’t wait to see them swimming in the sea in a few weeks! (As hell freezes over back at home!)

    They are great suggestions. Most of which I did know. We went to Yellowstone Dog Camp in Montana (I'm in NM and it's a 14 hour drive). We didn't drive straight thru, think I divided in 4 hour legs. But she did find it difficult. She loved getting out at parks and so on, but was NOT happy to get back in again.. "Not that again, that driving thing". There were a couple places there was just no where to stop, out in the middle of no where, no roads off the main one or anything. Also re dog friendliness of a state you are going thru--NM is good, CO is great, and Montana is fine, but WY---lots of trouble finding places to eat. And it was the middle of July, which was hard for us in most of the states. We will do more camping and 2-3 hour drives though. She loves to go camping.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jay! Yeah some states are definitely more friendly than others. And sometimes, it's drive thru and go!

    Some of the rest stops on the highways in Pennsylvania actually have little fenced in areas for dogs to run around in off leash. It's super nice for playing a quick game of fetch. I love the fact that I don't have to veer off the main road. My little guy's longest trip was probably around 10 hours or so from Pennsylvania to Michigan. He is pretty settled in the car. We do use a seat belt, plus he has a little dog bed in the back seat, but he will not play with any of his toys, or chew anything at all. Not sure why? Guess he's just too focus on looking out the windows, or keeping tabs on my driving, LOL!

    Great job! I regularly travel with my Aussie and Akbash Dog. I love the idea of exercising before traveling. The only point you did not make is that Dogs and children should never be left in a car. Even on an overcast day, a car can heat up by 19 (f) degrees greater than the outside air temperature within 10 minutes. If I have to keep my dogs in the car, I leave the air conditioning on full blast and ensure my time away from the car is less than 15 minutes. Just a helpful safety tip.

    These are awesome tips!! Any special tips for dogs with anxiety?? I don’t know if I’ll get to do a road trip, but I’m really hoping to do one at some point with my yorkie and our family. She has a lot of car anxiety and motion sickness 😭

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey Cats - Car sickness is a tough one. I would first reach out to your vet - they often have a perspiration or can recommend an over the counter like dramamine for your dog. On the behavior end, I would spend time with your dog in the car with the car off, feeding them daily in there. Then turn the car on and feed in the car, then drive just down the driveway while they are getting fed. This process can take weeks but the goal is to create positive associations with the car so that the dog starts to get excited about going into the car! Also things like covered crates, gingersnaps, and other herbal calming remedies can sometimes help. Hope that helps!

      @DoggyU  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@catsRwarriors3 Remember to be patient - it may take many weeks for your dog to be comfortable - and that depending on your dog's level of anxiety, it's definitely best to consult with a vet.

    This is so helpful! We are traveling from Texas to Colorado 12 hours. And bringing my two dogs Australian Aussie shepherd- young dog, and a Jack Russell pug mix -7 years old dog. And we’ve taken them up to Colorado before not too long ago.. but I think we plan on stopping at a hotel six hours in this time. And I really want to make sure they get enough potty breaks!
    You said every 3 to 4 hours right? And of course anytime we stop, letting them out :)

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm so glad this was helpful! As far as potty breaks, if your dogs are adults with normal potty schedules, I just relieve them every time I get gas. That is typically every 3-5 hours. That works for my two adult dogs. If it's a young dog, I'd relieve them more often. Safe travels!

    I have a small dog, 15 lbs, and he’s very anxious on car rides. He’s on high alert, cannot be distracted with toys or treats, and goes off the deep end with uncontrollable barking whenever I stop the car. I’ve been working on this for 2 years since I love road trips and want to take him with me. He’s gotten a bit better where he wants to get in the car, but he still displays some anxiety during the ride. Two hours is the longest trip we’ve been on together so far, but I’m planning a two-day trip next summer so I appreciate your tips. Since I’ll be travelling alone with the dog, I’d appreciate some tips there as well. I’m wondering how to work around not being able to leave the dog in the car for any length of time in the summer heat and not being able to take him with me for my nature and food breaks along the way since most stores/restaurants won’t allow pets.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dani - that sounds like pretty extreme anxiety. I would talk with your vet about what interventions might be appropriate to help your dog feel more comfortable. Your dog may also be the kind of dog that doesn't feel comfortable/confident on road trips and might feel better being left home with a trusted friend. I don't know your dog, so no way for me to tell over the internet. As far as dealing with leaving the dog in the car, drive thrus, takeout, curbside, and quick stops with the car running and the AC on at highway rest stops. Also traveling in cooler climates where heat is less of an issue.

    I'm always nervous about buying bones and other chew treats for my pup -- what types/kinds are best/safest?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So, I will preface this with saying there is risk with any chew you give your dog. Freak accidents happen. However, I personally use fresh marrow bones (uncooked) from the butcher, bully sticks, tracheas, and lots of frozen kongs. There are links above to some of the products I use. I always watch my dog the first few times I give them a new chew to make sure they don't do something destructive with it. Kongs are usually the safest bet for something to leave your dog with. You can check out my kong video here th-cam.com/video/p-fkW_2JEXA/w-d-xo.html to help you with what to stuff them with. Also, you want to stay away from rawhide and ropes as things to chew on as those can break apart and cause choking. If you're nervous about what to give them, i'd stick with kongs and tracheas, otherwise, I use everything listed above. :)

    Can you list what national parks you visited? I know some national parks don’t allow pets

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jessica - so we've been to soooo many national parks. All of them allow dogs in the car and on main roadways and in some campgrounds. There are only a few that have dog friendly trails. So here's some we've been to that aren't great for dogs: Arches, Badlands, Glacier, Sequoia, Pinnacles, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, Joshua Tree and more but here's some that have some dog access (but usually not all trails): Great sand Dunes, acadia, Shenandoah, White sands, grand canyon, and Zion (only has one trail open to dogs and it kinda sucks). So, you will have to make arrangements for your dog. So for instance in Yellowstone on the days we were doing a lot of driving around, the dogs came. On the days we wanted to hike, we rented an air B and B and left them there. Some will hire a dog sitter or put their dogs in daycare, which isn't an option for us, so you just have to make a plan for what works for your dog, or only visit places where your dogs can come. Remember, your dog should always be on leash in the national park system. Also, many national parks have national forest right outside the park bounds that is dog friendly, so check that out!

      A good rule is they can hold it for one hour per month of age. So at 3 months or so they should be able to hold it for 3.5 hours. It's typically more if they are stationary (like in a crate while you travel) but I'd give them lots of opportunities to potty! :)

    We are trying some of this with our older beagle. He usually gets car sick even going to the vet. We have a long road trip in a month. His usual home behavior is laying around doing nothing. Trying to get him to run is a chore. We took him today a little further by going 4 miles down to the grocery store. We got there fine. I stayed in the car with him when my husband went in to buy a few things. This upset the dog and he cried the whole time until my husband got back in the car.
    Any suggestions?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michelle! It sounds like he had some separation distress. Were you able to distract him with food or play? You may have to start with shorter periods (ie. husband gets out of the car, dog gets a treat, husband immediately returns to the car.)
      It may also be time to consult with your vet and/or a veterinary behaviorist, especially if you're planning on a long road trip. They can help you with some medical interventions for motion sickness or anxiety if your beagle needs to make the trip with you. Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

Also my mom believes that you can’t give a dog a bone to chew and less you can watch them the whole time To prevent any kind of choking I personally do not believe this unless it’s a rawhide because they can be dangerous but I also would never give my dog rawhide LOL I have a 15 month old German Shepherd and she has a 12 month old female Rottweiler her dog chews everything and I mean completely choose it like until it’s gone my dog doesn’t care too much for chewing unless it is a raw fresh meatballs and even then he can go without

      Hi David,
      There's a lot of options as far as when you need to go to activities without your dog. First, i would get a hotel where you ARE allowed to leave your dog if you have an activity you need to do without them. Second, if it is not too hot and not too cold, can you leave them in the car while you run a quick errand? That's a good option depending on weather for late fall and early spring. If you are going to a national park, many have doggy daycares nearby that you can sign your dog up for. Lastly, you can use an app like Rover to get a local petsitter for your dog. Choose whichever option you're most comfortable with. Thanks for watching! Best, Laura

      @@michd5290 I would definitely not use a shock collar on him in the car. Your dog is likely whining because he's scared, nervous or his stomach is upset. Applying pain to that situation will make him fear the car more, and likely increase the panting and whining and make him not want to be in the car at all. As I mentioned, I would call your vet and get some medical support that will help him feel more relaxed and less anxious in the car. This will support his mental health and car experience in the long term.

      DoggyU we use the shock collar for when we take him out and he tries to get a bird or a bunny. we put the shock low so it doesn’t hurt him. there is also a channel where it can make a beep which would get him to come like inside. it also has a vibrate channel, too. we went to the vet on Friday, they had to squeeze us in. so we can’t talk to the vet really Because they work so we can’t have a like conversation. we are trying to get him to go into the car but maybe if we like beep every time he whines, he will stop. knowing that if he keeps going, he i’ll hear a beep again.

      A crash-tested dog crate is an investment for sure. But check your local facebook marketplace. I recently picked up a $900 impact crate for $300 and a $400 ruffland kennel for $75 so deals are out there that will also keep your dog safe :)

    Forget it. It’s too late to get the three dogs “used to it”. No long hikes. They are little. They hate exercise

    lmao what do i do when i’m getting a puppy 3 hours away so it’d take 3 hours in a car to get home with a brand new pupper

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So all you can do in that case is be prepared with KONGs and chews for puppies. Usually new puppies sleep on the ride home since there's so much new stuff going on. It can help to give them some play, an exploratory walk beforehand. I know I had to drive my girl 9 hours home. Gave her two potty breaks but other than that she hung in the crate and chewed on her chewies. Good luck!
