    LZ are most definitely a blues influenced band and they blended it into rock, but they also play folk, middle eastern, heavy rock, funk and many other styles which is why they are impossible to pigeonhole...nobody compares to them

    This is the version that appears on the Led Zeppelin DVD that came out in 2007. It differs from the more common (and arguably more popular) version taken from "The Song Remains The Same" concert film. It's a different cut of the same Madison Square Garden footage, focusing entirely on the band & omitting crowd reaction shots. Both versions splice together footage & audio recorded on the 1st & 3rd nights of the 3-night concert stint.
    (Edited to correct the DVD release date.)

    The studio version of Zep songs was their basic form. When they took them on the road, they expanded them, sometimes 2, 3 or 4 times longer than the studio cuts. Although the studio cuts are magnificent, what really distinguished Zep from their contemporaries was they way they interacted together on stage. They never played a song the same way twice, as opposed to bands that copy their studio cuts note for note. Zep took chances, and you never knew where they would go ...they didn't either! The same setlist might be 3 hours long one night, and 3-1/2 hours long the next. Live Zep is what distinguished them from everyone else.

    Other songs you’ve heard that they did at MSG. YES! Dazed and Confused. Utterly iconic! 27 minutes long Remember that footage from this concert was used in their movie The Song Remains the Same, so you have concert footage sometimes interspersed with “fantasy” sequences by each member of the band. Jimmy used Dazed and Confused for his fantasy sequence and it’s a wonderfully creepy visual that melds perfectly with the music. Also, the video gives us a glimpse of the incredible connectedness of the band….Bonzo following Jimmy and JPJ and Bonzo communicating “behind the scenes” Very cool. And don’t worry about the length! All of us Zep fans know how long it is and LOVE IT

  • @helenespaulding7562
    @helenespaulding7562 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Zeppelin as you know is very diverse, but they were heavily influenced by Chicago and Delta black blues. The old blues greats were their idols, especially Robert’s, and he and Jimmy initially bonded over a shared love of that genre. Many over the years have called Zep a blues/rock band. And they do that genre SO well. But as you have discovered they are also so much more than that

    th-cam.com/video/1gHlbHtdVLU/w-d-xo.html Here's a link to a different version of Since I've Been Loving You recorded during the same three night stand at MSG. This one has some of the same footage but contains a different solo, a backstage conversation between Plant and Peter Grant (their manager), and some audience reactions that are priceless. Pay attention to the short shot of the security guard absolutely spellbound by what he is witnessing.

    If you're not aware, the 73' MSG performance was put together as a concert movie "The Song Remains The Same." It wasn't released until 1976. It's worth doing a sit-down review. You can break-up individually for YT, but recommend watching the whole thing privately. Also, if YT blocks, go ahead and just upload as you would normally with a link to it on G-Drive so we can watch that way. We'll still be able to leave comments on the YT post.

    This song is definitely bluesy and was meant to go on the 2nd album but they left it off in favor of Whole Lotta Love. There is a slightly different version of this that shows John Paul Jones playing the organ and he's playing the bass notes with his feet on the organ pedals. There are videos to several of the songs you've heard the studio cut of. Here's what I can think of and from which concert to look it up. All these are on TH-cam and I apologize I didn't have time to copy/paste the links. From LZ I: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Denmark concert, Dazed & Confused (MSG is ultimate - maybe you can try to redo & upload? True, it wouldn't be your initial reaction but, might be worth it), Black Mountain Side (Royal Albert Hall (RAH) look for link that says something like "best version"), Communication Breakdown - Denmark, I Can't Quit You Baby - RAH, How Many More Time - either Denmark or RAH (both are fantastic). LZ II album: Whole Lotta Love - MSG, What Is and What Should Never Be - RAH, Heartbreaker - Earls Court (use the version that is 8:12), Bring It On Home - RAH. LZ III album: Immigrant Song - "official video". This is all I can remember for now. Looking forward to seeing these! 😊

    Yes it's a blues song. But it's put into a rock setting. The majority of Led Zeppelin songs are either blues based or have some elements of blues. But the majority of rock also has elements of blues. This was an obvious thing back in the day. It seems that people were more aware of the various genres and their interplay, in my generation. Interesting note that most people might not realize - there were two performances by Zeppelin at MSG in 1973, same day. There is another live video on TH-cam of this song which has subtle differences. I think the other one is better. It's the one that shows a lot of the audience reaction. Some of the same video is used for both, but their performance is different and you'll have to pay attention to notice. Jimmy's solo is different for one. Yes, many other songs from MSG that are all killer.

  • @johnpetrie1918
    @johnpetrie1918 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nearly every live performance by Led Zeppelin you'll find on TH-cam comes from one of two sources: either the 2007 special edition DVD of "The Song Remains The Same" concert film; or the 2-disc DVD simply titled "Led Zeppelin" released in 2003.
    "The Song Remains The Same" was recorded over 3 nights (July 27th-29th, 1973) at Madison Square Garden. A year later the band then shot extra "performance" footage on a soundstage (not to be confused with the 4 cinematic "fantasy sequences"). The audio & visuals for each of the performances was constructed from multiple nights, as well as the soundstage footage, and studio overdubs recorded later. Some non-performance footage comes from a concert in another city (Boston, if I remember right). So while the film presents a "live concert", it's actually a carefully constructed presentation approximating a live show. The band was never really happy with how the project turned out, and only released it in 1976 due to Robert Plant having been injured in a car accident the previous year. The film was originally released on DVD in 1999; remixed & remastered, released on 2 disc DVD in 2007; and later remixed for bluray release in 2018. All 3 versions have different audio mixes. The soundtrack album, released in 1976, also remixed in 2007, sounds different than the film version.
    Most other performance footage of the band comes from the 2003 DVD. Led Zeppelin did very few officially-recorded performances. This was a strategy formulated by Page & the band's manager, Peter Grant, to force fans to attend live shows. It was a very successful strategy, business-wise, but it created a dearth of footage of the band in its prime. For years fans only had the '76 film, or any number of low-quality bootlegs shot on 8mm film. Jimmy Page spent years acquiring the best quality live audio & video available, and released it on the 2003 DVD.
    Prior the the 2007 "Celebration Day" reunion concert at the O2 Arena in London (released on DVD & bluray in 2012), Led Zeppelin only performed together 3 times following the band's break-up in 1980: the Live Aid concert in 1985; the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary show in 1989; & the band's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005.
    (Edited to correct DVD release dates.)

    excellent call on listening to the studio versions first. you can really see just how much they improvised in their live shows. they never played the same song twice. there is another video of this song from the same concert, imo it's even better than this version.
    jpj wanted to stay somewhat anonymous. he gave an interview once out in front of the hotel the band was staying at. of coarse the rest of the band was being mobbed with fans and jpj was standing out in the crowd talking with a member of the press saying that he liked to get out and do things instead of being a prisoner inside the hotel room and avoiding the cameras allowed him to do that somewhat

    @boki1693 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Songs from MSG you already reacted to. First of all, EVERY song from this concert is amazing and worth a listen. But off the top of my head. Dazed and Confused. It's like 28 minutes long but well worth the reaction. You get to see how much Page and Plant love to improvise on the spot in this song. And it is often considered a pinnacle of all time rock performances. Whole Lotta Love. Heartbreaker. Celebration Day and I think Friends. I know the last two are on the album but they may not be on the video. The concert has songs on it up to and including the Houses of the Holy Album. Which just came out at the time of this concert. You haven't done that one or Zep 4 yet. Zep 4 has on the MSG concert. Blackdog, Rock and Roll, Stairway. Misty Mountain Hop. Houses has The Rain Song, The Ocean. The Song Remains the Same. No Quarter. Many of these songs are accompanied with a theme sort of video with the live music played, of a fantasy sequence for each band member. "Dazed" does as well. Unfortunately, my favorite album, Physical Graffiti, came out after the MSG concert. But a few of their best songs from that album, Trampled Underfoot and In my time of Dying, a must live reaction, and a very good acoustic set of earlier songs is on the very good 1975 concert footage from Earls Court. But unfortunately, there is no excellent live version of arguably their second most popular song. Kashmir. There is a live version from the 1979 concert but the sound mix on that concert isn't very good. The best live version of the song to me is from the reunion concert from around 2007 when they are all about 60 years old. It's a pretty good version but there 60. LOL.

    A reactor that's been around a while said that rights to live recordings often are partially owned by the venue where they were recorded. So, what you run into is a label that may be fine with you playing it in a reaction, but the place -- like Madison Square Gardens for example -- has a right to block it.

    The frustrating thing to me with you tube is I have seen people react to this and other songs and sometimes not stop at all during the song and not do anything visually. But I have also seen others having to go through what you go through. There seems no consistency to it at all.
    Interesting, this is a different version than the one people usually react to. Is that maybe why your having problems loading it? This version is a bit more raw sounding. Not bad but more raw. Also, the video is a lot different. For one, you don't have to look at John Paul Jones' bad wig during Page's solo. And no pictures of the girls in the audience in this one. On the audio, the drums are mixed louder. Whats odd though is the little extra lyrics and vocals are clearly different at points and a few notes Page plays as well but they seem to match the same video from the other one. So, I am not sure what exactly happened here. LOL.
    No bass on this song. John Paul Jones is on the organ.

    You need to stop trying to fit Led Zep into a single genre -- they can't be pigeonholed into a single musical catagory. Their music was heavily influenced by MS Delta blues, but given their own signature sound. While many of their earlier songs are arrangements of older music, this one is an original composition. You need to try to listen to the originals of some of their blues songs -- When the Levee Breaks, You Shook Me, In My Time of Dying (Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed), for example. You'll see how they adapted the songs. As you follow more of their discography, you'll discover just how versatile and diverse their music is, and how much they added to live performances. Thanks for your focus on my all-time favorite band! It's great to see more young people appreciate the great talent of these amazing musicians.

    I'm the odd one out I think, don't care for this live, nor most of their songs live.

    Why do some reactors get away with it. Not a conspiracy, but I noticed black reactors don’t get blocked.🤷🏻‍♂️

      Oh yes they do. Soul Train Bro has done entire discography and often got blocked. But strangely enough, dozens have been unblocked since December I think part of it is that a large percentage of reactors on TH-cam are black, so even if some get blocked, more get through…. If that makes sense

    Try doing research before Reviewing. You failed close to a dozen times in your review. Wake up and recognise the greatness. This was 1973.. Raw talent. No autotune. No b's. Just real honest live musicians. Your inability to see it makes us All sad.
