Hey guys. I balanced the elevators. Changed the elev servos to d85s. And changed the Ali servos as well. Went elev straight to 2 channel to balance them And bypass the blue box. To RX. Due to voltage drop on low main battery’s Running 2 smart battery’s 5000 100 c. On factory front and rear battery boxes. And replaced ubec with my own switch and 2200 life 6,6 volt life with 5.5 voltage reg. And greased the axle with bvm grease. Plane has flew awesome. I put it in the straight down full power run. Not a issue ! Great plane from notion RC once again !
I have this one and I can honestly say it is my favorite EDF. I was a little intimidated at first due to it's size, cost and dual power systems. However, it is a gentle flier but has plenty of power for just about any maneuver you can think of. And it slows down nicely for landing. Sounds good and looks good in the air. This is my go-to EDF and worth every penny. Remember to calibrate your throttle before the first flight and like any twin, make sure both motors are running before take-off. It does not fly well on one motor. Ask me how I know!

great video, I have one that I have yet to setup and am looking forward to it. I ask as setup is so crucial to having a good flying plane and I find that so many that I fly with do such a poor job of actually setting up their planes. I have been taking extra care with my newer, bigger planes but would love to see how others do it (in detail) as that's how I learn. great videos and thanks!

I honestly couldn’t tell you. I typically hone in on the rates I like and keep them there. I’d recommend setting the recommendations in the vid as your mid rates and giving yourself a higher and lower option.

Hi Chris, awesome informative vid. It’s nice knowing you have both tomcat and the Mig. Which would you say is a more well rounded flyer? Ie performance, flight times, and bang for your buck? Thanks -Ant
The Mig is definitely the more we’ll rounded flyer. It’s bigger and generally more forgiving. The tomcat has the cool factor with the swing wing, but flies heavier than the mig.
Great review. I really enjoy mine as well. I also set up my ailerons with 25 mm throws. I had tried the setting in the manual but found it way too sensitive for me. Fortunately I had put in a lower rate flight mode that turned out be 25 mm and was much more comfortable, especially with a bit of expo thrown in. I pulled my CG back about 10 mm, but my elevator trim is also only about 3 mm right now. I'm still dialing all that in. Now I'm looking for a second set of batteries. I have 70C RT 5000s. I may go bigger with less C for the next pack so the weight is about the same. The 6250s are only 20g more so that may be a good option!
To get the cg, that’s where I needed to place my packs. That space is available if needed. If you’re using smaller capacity packs, you may need to put one battery further forward.
Regarding the elevator servos, also please be aware that the recommended CG is nose heavy to the point where it is actually directly dangerous in terms of the forces it puts on the elevator during flight. Aerodynamic calculus suggests the actual neutral point of the model is as much as 40 (!) mm aft of those marks, so one can very safely move back at least 10-20mm - and get a much lighter flying model that is far easier on the elevators at the same time. Other than that, the model flies brilliantly.
One thing to keep in mind is that there’s a certain amount of personal preference when it comes to Cg. Some folks prefer a slightly more nose heavy airplane where others want a more neutral feel. I personally don’t like the feel of an overly neutral airplane and actually found the stock location to feel quite nice in the air and based on the batteries I used, couldn’t get it further back without adding weight to the tail anyhow. The elevator issue is more related to inadequate servos imo.
I understand and respect the idea that cg preference may vary. The point in this case though is that we (lots of people on rcg and squawk) have done a lot of research on this, and the elevator issues are directly tied to the degree of nose heaviness
I’m with you and Yes, a more aft cg will reduce the load on the tail which in turn reduces the load at the servo. So that is one way to reduce the servo load. However, imo the issue here is not the cg placement, but rather it is inadequate and undersized servos. The servos are marginal at best for a model of this weight and size (even their replacements). My experience has been that the elevator servos are marginal in most of the larger FW jets.
@@Thercgeek Definitely true. For my part I will be improving the elevator structure as well, but yes, the servos and rods are definitely the most important point

I’ve not had any issue at all with the elevators. I did replace the servos as the stock ones are marginal at best, but I’m using the stock pushrods. BEC is the stock one as well.
Yep! They’re all on my website. The 80mm twin centerburners can be ordered here: www.thercgeek.com/product/80mm-CenterBurner-V2-Twin the mig uses 36mm inrunner motors.
Hey! I just got the new red star version and wanted to mess with the elevators separately. Do you mind explaining how you managed to split the elevator servos? I put tailerons on all my jets and can’t figure out how to split them, I’m guessing they are y’d together and some point through the fuselage? Would appreciate you greatly telling me how you did it
Chris. Getting ready to maiden mine soon. I'd like to know that while other pilots have been modifying their elevator control rods with stronger materials, have you did the modification as well or are you using the stock ones that came in the kit? From the looks of the video you used the stock ones correct??
Honestly, I think the best option is to just install some quality servos on the elevators. The stock ones are marginal at best imo (even their replacements). Mass balancing may help, but if they didn’t get the pivot in the right location, that means it’s not aerodynamically balanced which is a separate issue and will impart larger loads on the servo as a result regardless of mass balancing. I’m not saying they got it wrong, just noting that there are two things at play when we talk about balancing aero surfaces.
@@Thercgeek I also changes some of the screws out on the servo horns....they were very little. Just beefed them up. This is a great plane....Totally agree....We need more EDFs this size.
Which is easier flying and or better kit this Mig 29 or horizons su30? I'm 56 and getting back in the hobby. Have a old yellow aircraft f16 and your father's F86.
Well, the su-30 is a pretty amazing airplane that’s really well engineered. However, with the mig being a touch larger I found that it landed a little slower and also got longer flight times since it carries two batteries vs a single pack in the su-30.
Thanks, also have seen slot of elevator problem with the mig is this figured out or should I just get those hitec d-85 servo's you mentioned? How's yours held up any problem's? Thanks again for your no BS informative channel!
Thank you! That’s a very good question. They are supposed to be packaged with better servos now from what I’ve seen, so you could take a look, but replacing them at least gives you a known commodity. FW has historically undersized the elevator servos on their larger models. My mig hasn’t had any issues to date (except my friend hitting throttle cut on takeoff thinking he was retracting the gear 🤣).
Excellent Review Chris, was kind of holding off on getting one with all the intense chatter on the elevator concerns but I think you make a good point with the servos that should certainly add some piece of mind, and your review may just have pushed me over to the buy side. I also think some, not all of the crashes, may have had something to do with signal loss and have been adding RF chokes and remote satellite RX's on all my EDF's lately and so far, so good. One question, did you "beef up" the elevator control rods at all? It also looked like Hitec D85's were a drop in fit, correct? Of course your AB's look outstanding and I wouldn't have an EDF without them (even those that are not "supposed" to have AB's). Did you line the nozzles with aluminum tape (which works great for mine)? Last question, oddly enough a couple passes in the video looked like the AB's were not on, then in another pass with a similar view on the rear end, they were bright as hell?
Thanks! I used the stock pushrods, but it wouldn’t hurt to replace those as well with a du-bro 4-40 setup. The d85s dropped right in and there’s a wires extension in there as well, so it made it really easy. On the burners, I painted some reflective silver paint in there. You could line with aluminum tape as well, just be sure it can’t lift up from the exhaust flow. I’ve had that happen on some other airplanes. Lastly, the burners I have setup to be on only at the very top of the throttle, so yeah there are a number of passes where the lights are off. I like to use them in a manner indicative to the full size, so they’re on only when I’m at full throttle.
@@Thercgeek When I put the aluminum tape in, I make sure it runs fore to aft in line with the thrust with the forward part starting well under the fan so there is no edge to lift off from the thrust.
@@Thercgeek Loved the video Chris. For the Mig before installing your thrusters; I used for the first time a golfer Rustoleum Metallic Finish...it has been GREAT! Seems brighter than the past and using silver color....just a thought.
Well, they re pretty uniquely different. I think the F-16 is the most nimble while the mig lands the best out of those mentioned. it’s also the largest too.
@@Thercgeek I am in the market to buy my first ever RC plane. I might crash it on the first flight but I can’t wait anymore. I need to have one. I’ve special love for the Su30 and mig29 my country’s airforce flys them but I might just get the F16 or F15 since they are little cheaper
Well, before jumping into an edf jet, you want to have some good proficiency with flying in general. If you haven’t already, pick up the realflight simulator (bit.ly/RealFlt9-5s) or something similar. It provides very good practice for learning. Also, take a look at a good trainer aircraft and get plugged into a local rc club. There’s no replacement for some individual flight training with an instructor. They’ll ensure a successful progression as you learn.
Forgot to ask you, but on the D85s, I'm only using a 6 channel RX, the AR637T and therefore must have both elevator servos on the same channel, but I assume that I would have to also put a servo reverser on one of them, since I doubt they have a D85 R. Heard you say you ended up put each elevator servo on a separate channel which would allow you to reverse one of them in the TX, no ?
I put them in separate channels to get the original servos to match left to right. The d85s are programmable, so with the hitec programmer you can reverse the one servo.
What have you been flying to this point? If you’re proficient with what you’ve been flying, you could go any number of directions really. Is there a jet you’re looking at specifically?
I just put the same servos in my mig that you did and when you let go or move the elevators they shake violently trying to center. tried to slow them down didn't help. does yours do that?
I didn’t experience that at all. Could be because there’s not much load on them without the aero forces. Did you change anything other than the servos? (I.e try to mass balance the tails?)
@@Thercgeek Nope all I did was plug the servos into the receiver directly so I could trim them like you did I've seen some videos on TH-cam about flutt er people we're putting Velcro in between the rudders and stuff but I don't know if you can do it on the style of plane. I'm sure because it's a flying stab is why cause even if the plane is just sitting there and you flick the back of the elevator it'll start fluttering.
That’s really strange. I’ve not had that as an issue before. What radio are you using? What happens if you apply a small load to the tail when it starts to jitter? Does it continue or does it stop? You may need to go to analog servos instead of the digitals.
@@Thercgeek I'm running an IX12. yeah flew fine with the stock servos but I seen you and another guy upgraded to these servos so I thought I would try them. If you touch them with a little pressure they will stop. some people were putting Velcro in between the plane and the elevator to cause a little friction to stop it. I don't think it does it in flight when it's under load but was just curious because you and the other guy didn't seem to have this issue with these servos. So if you hold full up elevator and let go of the stick yours does not flutter
Hello , Hello , Please help me. I have a MIG 29 80mm aircraft. I have 5000 mAh batteries and I have a problem with the blue battery handle. It is very hot and can cause the plane to burn. What is the problem to know that I only work on one fan because the first battery is empty of charge and the other is fully loaded. Is this the cause of the problem or No? Thank you
It sounds to me that you flew for to long a time and depleted the batteries. I’d recommend reducing your flight time down to avoid this. The batteries will get very hot when fully depleted and it significantly reduces their life span also.
I just caught the last bit of your comment. It sounds like the fans are only being powered by one battery pack. We’re both fans operating? I recommend verifying that as it seems as though only one may have been operating.
@@Thercgeek The fan runs on two batteries, each fan belongs to a battery, okay? But the handle is very hot and this is very strange. Could it be the fault of connecting the wires to the motherboard?
Well, I understand the sentiment, but have you flown the model? That hasn’t been my experience or the experience of my friends with this model. The original elevator servos were insufficient for sure, but I swapped them out at the onset. For the price, you shouldn’t have to do that, but Generally my experience with the larger freewing models has been that the stock elevator servos are marginal, so I swap the elevator servos as standard normally. A small cost for added assurance and robustness in my mind.
Changing the servos will not make any difference ! The problems lies with the power supply. 5.0 volts is "not" enough. You will encounter an under voltage very quickly as the demand on the servos goes up. Just like when you need the elevators servos to pull you out of a dive !!!
Well, it’s both servo torque and voltage. At 5v the d85s have higher torque than the stock servos. So that does take care of a good portion of it. If the bec is undersized, I haven’t personally experienced any kind of issues with it. The airplane has been rock solid for me.
Needs thrust vectoring or forget it!!!!!!! Not for that price!!!!! I have my LX models and can do EVERY maneuver the real one can. Flat spins, Cobra, you name it, I can do it if it's within 3 minutes. But it does so because of TV nozzles. How hard would it have been to do this? Not much more in cost either. In fact, in the same cost cause you buy in bulk. Sell more per month at a lower cost or sell less per month at a higher cost? Same thing, but reach more people and sell more parts as well. DUH!!!!!!!

What about flaps and ailerons reflex? Can you explain more? Where can I find that info? Thanks
That’s all in the video. I provide my full deflection and setup recommendations. 😊
Chris.
Getting ready to maiden mine soon. I'd like to know that while other pilots have been modifying their elevator control rods with stronger materials, have you did the modification as well or are you using the stock ones that came in the kit?
From the looks of the video you used the stock ones correct??
Yep, I upgraded the servos and then used the stock pushrods.
@@Thercgeek
Ok thank you
Hi Chris; Would there be any benefit in balancing the elevators ?
Nice! I’ve found a nice reflective paint in the exhaust works great as well.
Hey Chris... are the tails mass balanced?
They are not mass balanced.
Its was cool, i want it 😭🥺
Simulated Afterburner (36mm inrunner twin) , EDF included?
The simulated afterburner is an add-on that I offer at thercgeek.com/cebterburner

Select 80mm Option and 36mm Inrunner Twin $100.00 USD ?
That is correct.

RC GEEK AFTERBURNERS ROCK! 🤘🤘🤘
Out of the F16EDF, Su30 EDF and the Mig29 EDF which one would you recommend?
@@Thercgeek Thanks, that's why you're the RC Geek and I'm more like the RC Goof!
How long runway do u need?
What would be a good second jet ?
What have you been flying to this point? If you’re proficient with what you’ve been flying, you could go any number of directions really. Is there a jet you’re looking at specifically?
@@Thercgeek I’ve been fly the viper 70mm id prefer a military jet I really want to fly the f 16 80mm but I need something that good for grass landings
I'm from Bangladesh...
I also like this model.. 🥰
Can i get it?
Where did you get that surface deflection meter?
It’s called an accuthrow meter and was made by great planes. Unfortunately, it’s been discontinued.
How much does it cost?
North korean livery refinish please😍
I just put the same servos in my mig that you did and when you let go or move the elevators they shake violently trying to center. tried to slow them down didn't help. does yours do that?
I didn’t experience that at all. Could be because there’s not much load on them without the aero forces. Did you change anything other than the servos? (I.e try to mass balance the tails?)
@@Thercgeek Nope all I did was plug the servos into the receiver directly so I could trim them like you did I've seen some videos on TH-cam about flutt
er people we're putting Velcro in between the rudders and stuff but I don't know if you can do it on the style of plane.
Took a video of it th-cam.com/video/qkdc2BcVh2I/w-d-xo.html
Never mind my Arrows mig29 retracts for the F-14 comment ... this might work prettye much stronger than the one on the arrows.
That’s true.

@@Thercgeek No, no, no, only ten seconds, and the handle on the battery is getting very hot
@@Thercgeek The fan runs on two batteries, each fan belongs to a battery, okay? But the handle is very hot and this is very strange. Could it be the fault of connecting the wires to the motherboard?
@@Thercgeek What is the UBEC/BEC code?
Какая максимальная скорость у него?
I'm not sure the top speed. It's probably doing up to about 120mph as a guess.
All I have to say is butter.

I here it's a big Yard dart. Who wants a $600.00 dart.
@@Thercgeek My comments are based on real flight telemetry.
DUH!!!!!!!
From what I understand, they have a TV design mod in the works for this. That’s about all I know though.
What batteries are those and flight times?
Roaring top 6s 6250mah packs. I got over 4 minutes with those in there.
